Chapter 1: The beginning

Chapter Text

The doubt scratches at his mind like a wild animal, and honestly he can’t take it any longer. William sighs, head in hands as he debates internally on what he should do to remedy the situation placed in front of him by that damned Mallard Conway.

He did exactly what was told. They did, as a group. Vyncent, Dakota, Ashe, and himself. Defeated that soul and took it to Mal, and now he stands there. Mallard is in front of him, his friends in back, as he debates if he should consume that soul.

On one hand there is the morality of consuming a soul for power. Considering he is kinda a soul is this sorta like cannibalism of some sort? These thoughts are hurting his head.

And on the other hand, if he doesn’t, Mal will consume it himself gaining more power. And that in general is bad since we have no idea what kind of bad stuff Mal would do with this power.

Either way he is stuck in this decisional paralysis waiting for some kind of answer to fill his brain.

Mal taps his foot, glancing at a handheld watch before looking up, “Time is ticking, Whisperer. What is your decision?”

William looks at Mallard, before glancing back to his friends,

Dakota looks pissed, as if he would tear Mal apart if he didn’t have Tide in his arms.

Vyncent, who is helping Dakota hold Tide, meets his eyes and gives a reassuring smile, somethat that eases some part of William’s brain slightly.

And Ashe just looks tired and horrified at the same time over this situation, flicking his hand through his book, glancing between the whole group, and shoulders tensed.

William sighs, before turning his back once more to his friends, walking over to Mallard, and snatching the soul in the container from him, ignoring the proud smirk the being does, and downs the soul.

As William cries out, Vyncent drops his share of carrying Tide, Dakota easily taking the brunt of the drop, and yells, “Hey! What did you do to Will!”

Mal chuckles, “It was his choice, he could have just refused the soul.”

“What did you do to him??” Dakota roars after Vyncent.

“He’ll be fine! He has so much potential to be powerful, you know.” Mal brushes off, “Anyways you three be off now. Get your fish dad safe.”

Vyncent shakes his head, and moves to go grab William off the ground, but is surprised by the sudden force of magic that presses to his chest as he is pushed back by something.

“No. The Whisperer is staying.” Mallard grins.

Ashe shakes his head at that, “You think we’re leaving him behind?”

Mal nods, “Yes. You will be.” And suddenly a portal appears, engulfing Dakota and Vyncent into it, angry shouts as they yell out in shock and anger, but Ashe stays behind, as Mallard walks over to him curiously.

“That book. It is how you got here, right?” Mal asks.

Ashe glares, and clutches the book closer.

“I’ll do something real quick then.” And Mal’s arm turns a shadowy black, and plunges into the book, grabbing something and pulling it out, as a piece of paper erupts into soul fire and disintegrates, before patting Ashe on the back, “I’ll still be watching you, anyone with a book like that interests me.” Before pushing Ashe, and like with the other two, Ashe falls back into a portal, back to the world of the living.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

It feels like his whole soul is on fire, as William falls over, clutching his chest as his veins light up with a fiery glow of wisp fire. He cries out, tears stinging his eyes as his vision almost blacks out for a second from agony, all before it cools down, William lays there panting. He is vaguely aware of the sound of muffled shouting and a whoosh, before he fully comes to.

He pushes himself up from the ground, a groan escaping from his lips, before he stares up at Mal. He scrambles back, glancing behind him at where his friends…used to be. They are gone now.

“What did you do?” William shouts.

“Me? Nothing! They watched you consume that soul and found you disgusting and evil so they left.” Mal shakes his head, “truly horrible friends.”

William shakes his head, “No. No they wouldn’t…would they? No! Of course not! They are my friends.”

Mal frowns, and sits beside William, “..Would they? I mean I watched them do it myself, but would they? I mean Dakota, is that his name? He seems very hero centric and does the best moral thing, right? You ate a soul .”

William shakes his head, “Yeah…But you forced me! I had to do that because if i didn’t you would!”

Mal shakes his head, “No, that was all you, Whisperer. That was your choice. And you supposed “friends” saw that too, and found you disgusting.”

“But…Vyncent…Ashe…” William stares down at the ground.

“You’ve just met Ashe, haven’t you? And Vyncent is also a hero after all. He does what's right like Dakota.” Mal tsks, before standing up again. “They think of you as a monster.”

William starts to tear up, “I did this for everyone’s good…but they didn’t see it that way. They abandoned me.”

Mal hums, and offers out a hand, “I wouldn’t abandon you though, i’m still here.”

William gives him a look, “Isn’t this your house? Makes sense why you are here.”

Mal ignores his comment, and still offers his hand, “I see the good in you, the good in what you have done.”

He hesitates, staring at Mal’s hand, before grabbing it, Mallard hoisting him up, and setting a hand on his shoulder steadying him.

“I can help you train to become more powerful. I can help you learn your domain, and be so much better than the living.” Mal starts to lead William, stopping at a window that overlooks the afterlife, “This is your domain to rule after all.”

William stares out at the desolate lands off the afterlife, feeling some sort of belonging pull at his chest.

“Forsake your old life, your old ways. Embrace death as you were always meant to be.” Mal prompts, “I’ll even sweeten the pot and allow you to own half of this place all to yourself, to do whatever with. I’ll give you everything you want. Just accept my deal.”

William hesitates, looking at Mal, looking at the afterlife, looking at his phone, with all of his friends contacts inside. He looks at his parents contacts, his brother’s. His friends.

And he crushes it. Blue fire encapsulating the device, and he tosses it down at the ground, destroying it.

“I accept.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Now this way, Whisperer.”

Chapter Text

“We need to get back.” Dakota was instant, dragging Tide to the couch as fast as he could before rushing back in, “We need to get William back.”

Vyncent nods, looking just as irritated by the presence of their friend being not there with them as Dakota.

Ashe nods and quickly opens up the book, flipping through pages until he lands on the page again, trying to muster up the strength to summon, but finds nothing appears. His eyebrows furrow as he tries again.

“Ashe? What's the hold up? Will needs us.” Dakota asks.

“I…Sorry Dakota, Vyncent. I can’t..” Ashe sighs closing the book.

“What?” Vyncent looks confused.

“What do you mean you can’t?” Dakota presses.

“I think Mal did something to my book…he reached his arm into it before teleporting me back and now i’m not getting a response from Duck…I’m so sorry…” Ashe apologizes.

“No….” Dakota’s hands shake a little, “that…Bastard!!” he growls, “We will get back there. Even if not by the book. I refuse to lose another person I care about.”

Vyncent nods, “There has to be a way. I mean I’m not even from this place. If I can get here somehow, then we can get to the spiritworld without the book.”

Ashe nods, a small smile creeping up his face, “I hope so.”

Vyncent nods, turning his attention to Dakota, “Lets go check on Tide, yeah?” He offers.

Dakota forces his tense body to relax and nods, “Yeah. Good idea, Vynce.”

The three leave Ashe’s room, to see Mark standing out there looking at the still passed out Tide laid on the couch. He glances over to the three, “I see you got Tide back.” He seems to relax a little seeing Ashe is back, but his gaze turns confused again, “Wasn’t there another one of you? The teen with the hoodie…”

Dakota tenses up again, seemingly ready to yell at Mark his name is William, but Ashe speaks up, “William. Yeah….he got trapped.”

Mark stands up taller, “I knew it was dangerous!” He shouts, “Neither of you are going back. It was a miracle you got out.”

“Dad…” Ashe frowns.

“You can’t keep us from doing it! We will find a way to get him back!” Dakota glares at the adult.

“We’re not leaving Will behind.” Vyncent nods, standing his ground as well.

“Well until Tide is up and functional I am not letting you do anything….don’t want an angry hero after me more than the heroes are already.” Mark grumbles.

“Lets….just go back to my room,” Ashe tells the other two, “Dad you’ll tell us if Tide awakens, right?”

“Yeah…however you might hear fighting first before I’m able to tell you if he thinks I hurt his kids.” Mark chuckles awkwardly.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Vyncent assures before Ashe tugs the other two teens back to his room.

When the door shuts, Ashe starts talking, “I do want to help you guys get William back if you would let me.”

“Of course why wouldn’t we??” Dakota looks shocked.

“You’re one of us, man!” Vyncent adds in

Ashe smiles at that, “Thanks guys. We’ll..need to work around my dad noticing it though. We need to do research anyway to find out how to get to the spiritworld without my book though.”

Dakota groans at that, “I hate having to research! I want to kick villain ass!”

“How would we even get that kind of information…” Vyncent mumbles.  “Will was our research guy…”

“...Library?” Ashe suggests.

“Well. That will be our start.” Dakota confirms, “We’re going to get you back, Will, any way we can.”

______________________________

William explores the part of the mansion he was given. The east wing is very expansive as he finds out, decorated up like some shitty haunted house. He snickers a little at how tacky it is. He thinks he’s allowed to decorate it how he would want. So he makes mental notes of rooms and areas he would change.

One area he finds excites him, as it is an office type space. He can do his poetry here, as well as do his research on his role as Whisperer.

“Ah so you found the office already.” Mal’s voice speaks up from the doorway, startling William as he goes intangible for a second, however finding he does not fall straight through the floor.

“Sorry, Whisperer, did I startle you?” Mal asks, apologetic.

“I’m…I’m fine.” William assures turning around to face Mal once again, “Did you want to ask me something?”

Mal shakes his head, “No, of course not. We were going to start our training tomorrow after all. However, I want to show you something with this room.”

“O..kay?” Will steps aside, letting Mallard walk in,

“This will be your study space of course, not all I can teach you will be by myself, all past whisperers have written their own stories and advice for ones to come. As likely you will too.” Mal continues, “However you don’t exactly need to walk across the hallways to get to the library.” And he pulls a torch down like a lever, the fire extinguishing as suddenly a door opens from an empty bookcase.

“...Secret door…” William awes at it.

“Go along ahead, I’ll be behind.” Mal ushers William ahead, who steps into the secret hallway, wisps appearing along lighting the way to a massive library.

“Wow…” William stares at the shelves lining and going up high.

“And this is our shared library space. I myself have read most of what's in here, but you, Whisperer, can take whatever you want. Most of what you may ask of the spiritworld can be answered here. And i’m sure the wisps would help you find anything you need.”

“...Can I have this space to myself for a second?” William asks.

“Of course. You know where to find me. You just need to slot the torch back into place to close the hallway.” Mal explains, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Whisper, I hope you sleep well.”

And the man vanishes.

William sighs in relief, seeing he is alone again. Well, mostly alone, other than the wisps around. He turns to the one closest to him, “Hey. Is there any books in here that has more on Mallard Conway?” he asks.

The wisp stares at him before rushing off, leaving William to run to follow it.

Maybe if he is here, maybe he can find out more on who his new mentor and host is.
