Best Beloved, Hassian

Chapter 147: A Lover's Reassurance

Chapter Text

When Hassian returned to Robin’s that night, he arrived to see the fire in the camp already lit. Robin sat on the log, watching the flames dance. A small, orange, furry bundle was nestled in his lap. Apart from petting it, Robin’s usual fidgets were gone, and his face looked a little harrowed.

Barking, Tau dashed over, wagging his tail, and the bundle on Robin’s lap lifted its head, resolving into the shape of the kitsuu. Robin smiled as the hound touched noses with the settled kitsuu, and he scratched Tau’s neck in greeting, but his heart wasn’t in it. Tau plopped down next to the fire with a huff, and the kitsuu hopped off Robin’s lap to settle next to him, nuzzling his blue fur affectionately.

Robin looked up, saw Hassian, and stood, moving around the fire to greet him.

“Are you alr-”

Robin didn’t let him finish the question. He cupped Hassian’s face in his hands and pulled it up to kiss him. Hassian forgot what he was about to say as his eyes gently closed. As soon as their lips had made firm contact, Robin released his cheeks, granting him the ability to step away.

Hassian stayed. He reached up and moved one hand around the back of Robin’s neck, anchoring himself and keeping the human’s lips against his. Robin kept his hands away for a few moments more, waiting for Hassian to let go, but when he didn’t, Robin gently snaked his arms around the hunter’s waist, pulling him in closer. Hassian trailed one hand down Robin’s arm while the other held his neck firmly. Their lips refused to sepa⁡rate, as Hassian’s answered a question he wasn’t even aware Robin’s were asking, their insistent touches gently wiping both minds clean.

They were both rooted to the spot. The idea of having distance between them now felt unacceptable, the idea of being anywhere but each other’s arms unthinkable. They hadn’t seen each other in about a day and a half, and now that seemed such a long time, away from the other, away from this, away from the feeling of warmth that filled their chests and sped up their hearts. Hassian was like a furnace in the cold of the snow, and Robin couldn’t bear to let him go. Robin stood as a shelter from the wind, and Hassian couldn’t think of leaving his grip.

It took a while for them to finally pull apart. Whatever sadness Robin felt was gone, replaced with a quiet wonder. He looked down at Hassian, taking in the sharp cheekbones, the gently purple skin, the deep green eyes looking back at him. Hassian was mildly dazed, all thoughts jolted out of his head at the intensity of the greeting, and completely, absolutely smitten.

“What brought that on?”

Robin gave a small half-smile. “Do I need a reason to kiss you?”

Hassian pondered this, still rebooting from being kissed dizzy. “No,” he said, and pulled Robin in to kiss him again.

Robin hadn’t really answered his question, but it was for the best. By the time they let each other go, he couldn’t remember the reason anyway.
