Naruto: Kansen

Summary:

The ninja world, ravaged by war. But this apocalypse will be greater than any of those. An infectious virus accidentally unleashed by Orochimaru and Sasuke Uchiha will bring utter chaos to the ninja world with its starting point of destruction being in the Hidden Leaf Village. Who will survive and who will die? There's only one way to find out.

Notes:

Note that I've seen the popularity of a lot of these infection AU's recently. I even like some of them, such as the JJK one. But I haven't seen anyone touch the Naruto series. So, I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring and give my interpretation of such a story. If you like this story I'll consider adding more to it beyond a single part.

Also note that I don't own Naruto/Naruto Shippuden/or Boruto. All characters belong to Masashi Kishimoto and Shueisha. Nothing besides the plotline of the story is my own.

Chapter 1: The End Begins

Chapter Text

It was a day like any other. The wind briskly blowing through the tree’s of a dense forest. Two figures, cloaked in red and black walked through the dense woodlands.

“Awe come on!” Called Hidan to his partner Kakuzu.

“I said shut it!” Kakuzu barked back.

“Let’s just rest a little bit. The Jinchūriki isn’t going to get very far if we just take a break for a little bit.”

“No dice,” replied Kakuzu. “We’re seeing this through until the end of the day. I intend on getting paid for this one.”

“Oh, suck it!” Hidan spat. “Last time wasn’t my fault.”

“Then who’s fault was it?” Asked Kakuzu. “Jashin’s?”

Hidan grew angry at Kakuzu’s words.

“Don’t insult the great Jashin! His will is just and merciful.”

“Ah-huh.” Replied Kakuzu nonchalantly.

Suddenly, a branch snapped behind the two. They instantly flipped around, on guard, suspecting it to be the work of a ninja that was tailing them. However, when they turned around they discovered a single lanky figure. But something wasn’t right about them. Their skin was rotting and peeling, a funky smell surrounded them, and they were hunched over. The two then noticed the figure’s ghostly white eyes. Devoid of any kind of life. It almost looked like a decoy of some sort. But this was no jutsu.

“What’s wrong with him?” Asked Hidan.

“How should I know? I’m not the guy with all the answers.” Kakuzu barked back.

“Whatever, should we kill him?” Asked Hidan.

“Yes,” replied Kakuzu. “They’re a witness to us.”

Hidan smirked wickedly, approaching the ghastly figure in an excited manner.

“You’re a lucky guy, pal.” He said. “You’re about to become the latest sacrifice to Lord Jashin!”

But before Hidan could attack the man, a few more figures appeared out of nowhere. Hidan and Kakuzu looked around them. They were surrounded by the same ugly and flesh rotted people. What were they?

The two knew they were in for a fight and so charged in with little hesitation.

Twelve Hours Earlier

Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sannin, was sitting in his room within his underground bunker. He had his eyes closed and was meditating. But he was also preparing for one of his students to arrive. Sasuke Uchiha. He had picked him up a few years ago and was planning on using him to give himself a more powerful and far younger body.

However, Sasuke was not an idiot and Orochimaru knew this. So, he had been waiting for the day Sasuke would betray him. In fact, he had been waiting for so long that he had developed a medical potion that would grant his body eternal life. The thing he sought out more than anything else.

The chemical compound mixed perfectly with his body’s regenerative cells. However, he wondered if it would do the same with Sasuke’s. That was what angered him about this betrayal. It was too soon! He hadn’t had the time to fully develop the medical potion. He would have to either kill Sasuke and waste a new body or find some other way to use Sasuke to get his body.

“Looking for me?” Asked a young bruting voice from behind.

Orochimaru’s eyes widened. Standing behind him was Sasuke Uchiha. His strong aura could be felt from even a mile away.

“Ah, Sasuke.” Orochimaru said calmly, pretending to not be surprised. “What brings you to my room so early in the morning?”

“Shut up, I’m here to get rid of you.”

Orochimaru was surprised by Sasuke’s boldness, but that was to be expected from a boy so young. So confident that he was invincible and unbeatable. He had no idea who he was dealing with.

“Oh? And why would you want to do that?

Suddenly, a blade jabbed through Orochimaru’s chest. Sasuke moved like a flash and stabbed him through the chest before Orochimaru even had time to blink.

“Because I no longer need your power. I can kill my brother on my own now.”

Orochimaru coughed up blood before Sasuke removed his blade. Orochimaru fell to the ground, blood pooling down his lip. He then turned around.

“No! It can’t end like this!” Orochimaru thought before being slashed across the chest by Sasuke.

His body then rolled onto his stomach, before it went limp. Sasuke looked over Orochimaru’s body. Dissatisfied with how easily Orochimaru had been put down. Maybe he was stronger than he had originally thought. Suddenly, Orochimaru’s body twitched and jerked about. Then, a huge serpent form spat out of the back of Orochimaru’s body.

“What the … hell!?” Sasuke thought as he got some distance between him and the creature.

“What? You thought it would be that easy to kill me, Sasuke?” Snarled the creature, his voice the same as Orochimaru.

“What the hell are you!?”

“This is my true form.” Orochimaru spat.

Orochimaru then leapt at Sasuke, in an attempt to bite him and take over his body. However, Sasuke ducked under the bite and slid across the ground to the other end of the room. He then used his blade to slash at Orochimaru’s lower body. Before he could do anything else. A purple vapor was rising from his sizzling blood. Sasuke quickly covered his mouth, but it was too late. The Orochimaru cells from the vapor had entered into Sasuke’s lungs. He coughed and hacked as the cells began to mutate his body.

“Wh-what have you done!?” Cried Orochimaru as he slithered about on the ground, bleeding profusely.

Suddenly, Sasuke stopped moving. Dead silence followed. Orochimaru was curious as to what was happening.

Sasuke then suddenly turned around, his jaw melting and showing his snarling teeth. Other bits of his flesh began to peel off, his eyes went pale and empty, and a strong foul smell began to emanate from him.

“What is this!?” Thought Orochimaru, suddenly it hit him. “It must be the new medical potion I made. It only worked on me because my cells are very regenerative, so it nullified the negative effects of the potion. But … Sasuke’s cells are different, so instead it is rotting his body! Forcing it to do things it was never meant to do.”

Sasuke then snarled at Orochimaru, before approaching him methodically. Orochimaru begged him to stay back, to get away. But it did no good, as he kept coming. As soon as Sasuke reached him he began to bite into him. Ripping Orochimaru apart like he was tissue paper. Blood and purple vapor filled the room as Orochimaru screamed and begged for mercy. But he received none. This … thing, this methodical monster was no longer Sasuke Uchiha. He was something else entirely. A beast whose only goal was to feed and spread the virus within him.

“Lord Orochimaru!” Called the voice of Kabuto as his eyes shot open.

He was laying in his personal bed, being Orochimaru’s right hand man granted him certain privileges not granted to other associates of his.

Being so close to Orochimaru also meant he knew when his master was in danger. It was like a sixth sense of sorts. So, he hurried towards his room. Hoping and praying to reach him before any damage could be inflicted on him.

But by the time he reached him, it was already too late. Orochimaru, or what remained of him, was dead. Bloody and shredded to pieces. Kabuto nearly cried at the sight. Orochimaru, the supposed immortal and invincible threat to the ninja world, was dead. Just like that.

Kabuto knew who the killer was, Sasuke Uchiha. But where could the little brat be? Suddenly, the sound of screaming could be heard down the hall and near the prison. Kabuto ran to the balcony that overlooked the prison, inside was a bloodbath. Prisoner’s attacking each other without mercy. But how could that be? Their Chakra reserves were so pitifully low that they could never harm anyone, even each other.

That was when Kabuto realized that some of the prisoners looked rotted, like walking corpses. These prisoners were fighting like animals and were scratching and biting the other prisoners. What could this be? Kabuto then laid eyes on Sasuke, deep in the crowd. He looked as ghastly as some of the other prisoners. It gave Kabuto a sickly feeling. This was not the Sasuke Uchiha he once knew. No, something was wrong about him. The same went for the other prisoners who looked just like him.

Kabuto wanted to fight, to avenge his fallen master. But he knew better. He knew it would be better to retreat and make a plan of attack then to run blindly into battle against these … things. Even after running away from the prison, the bloodbath continued until every last one of the prisoners were zombified monsters. Flesh rotting, teeth bared, eyes hollow and sunken, and mouths making ghastly groaning and screeching noises.

They began to patrol around the building, but the smartest among them found the exit to the prison compound. Making their way into the outside world. The infected then followed their instincts, searching for more targets to infect. They then began to head for the nearest village to them. The Hidden Leaf.

Kakuzu had finished slicing through a few more infected. Their mutilated bodies collapsed to the ground in pools of blood.

“Hidan! Where are you?” Kakuzu asked.

“I’m doing fine!” Laughed Hidan as he sliced one of the heads of the infected in half. “Lord Jashine will love the sacrifices.”

Hidan then licked the blood off of the edge of his triple-bladed scythe. A joyous feeling went coursing through his veins. Kakuzu shook his head, Hidan always seemed to find a way to bother him. He was too reckless and his stupid Jashine rituals always slowed down their progress.

Suddenly, an infected jōnin came up from behind him and bit him right on the arm. Kakuzu cried out in surprise and pain. He quickly grabbed the infected jōnin’s head and ripped it off of his body in one singular move. He then threw the infected jōnin’s head to the ground and squashed it in anger. Blood spurted out from the infected ninja's head and covered his pant leg.

Kakuzu then looked at his arm where the infected had bitten him. There was a somewhat visible bite mark, but there was otherwise no damage. As Kakuzu lacked blood, the virus stagnated in his arm and quickly died off. However, Kakuzu didn’t know this and pondered why these infected ninjas were trying to bite him and Hidan. That was when it clicked in Kakuzu’s head.

“These corpse-like ninja must be carrying some type of pathogen or special jutsu that is passed from person to person through biting!” Kakuzu thought.

He then turned to Hidan, attempting to warn him about the plague. But it was no use, as Hidan was already snarling like a wild beast and his skin began to peel off.

“No …” Kakuzu said, realizing he had becoming infected when he licked the blood from his blade.

Hidden then charged at Kakuzu, catching him off guard and landing another bite mark onto him. This time on his neck. Kakuzu then returned the favor by punching Hidan in the gut, before grabbing his chin and throwing him to the side. He rolled on the ground, shrieking. He then stopped, found his footing, helped himself onto his feet, and continued moaning and groaning as he prepared to dash at Kakuzu again.

Kakuzu wanted to incapacitate his infected partner, but with the swarm of other infected shinobi coming his way, he didn’t want to risk getting overwhelmed.

“Next time … Hidan.” Kakuzu said to his infected partner before dashing away.

The infected cried out, wishing to pursue, but none were fast enough. Kakuzu ran for what felt like forever. He hated the idea of retreating, but he knew he had to survive in order to warn the other members of the Akatsuki about these infected ninja.

Once he found a safe space in the forest, he then slowed to a stop. Before sitting down and using the Magic Lantern Body Technique. His form was cast to the new Akatsuki hideout. Soon one-by-one the other Akatsuki members joined in to listen to the message.

“Kakuzu,” said Pain, the leader of the Akatsuki. “What brings this sudden meeting to order? Did you capture the Jinchūriki?”

“No, me and Hidan never made it there.” He replied.

“Then why have you called this meeting, hm? To disclose your failure?” Pain said sternly.

“No, I have called this meeting because there is an urgent threat arising that me and Hidan fought against.”

“What is it?” Asked Pain as the other Akatsuki members looked in Kakuzu’s direction, eager to know more.

“Well, there appears to be some kind of virus or jutsu reanimating the dead.”

“Like … the Impure World Reincarnation Summoning?” Asked Konan.

“No, it's … quite different. It's like their rotting corpses are reanimating themselves and fighting against the living.”

“Well, you would know a lot about rotting corpses, Kakuzu.” Laughed Tobi innocently as Kakuzu glared at him.

“Tobi.” Pain said sternly as Tobi quickly silenced himself.

“There’s more to this … mysterious plague.” Kakuzu continued. “These infected shinobi not only attack the living but also try to bite and claw at them. Possibly to further the spread of whatever this is.”

“Really?” Asked Pain.

“Yes, they tried to infect me a few times during our encounter with them. But it seems due to my physiology I am immune to the infection.”

“So, where is Hidan now?” Asked Itachi curiously.

“He’s … become one of them, unfortunately.” Kakuzu replied. “There was nothing I could do.”

The entire Akatsuki was stunned, not so much out of pity for Hidan but rather genuine surprise and a little bit of fear. Hidan was far from the strongest of their ranks. But his immortality and other abilities were what made him dangerous. To think that he had been brought down by this infection too was startling.

“This calls for an emergency meeting in the Village Hidden by Rain." Pain commanded. "We will all ignore our current objectives and meet there as soon as possible. No exceptions.”

“And then what!?” Barked Deidara angrily. “Stand by as the rest of the ninja world gets picked off by this virus!?”

“We don’t even know if this is a virus.” Reminded Konan. “Our leader is right, regrouping and planning our next move in a secure location is the smart option.”

“How secure is the Rain Village?” Asked Zetsu.

“Very.” Replied Pain sternly. “Now go, and any members not present by the end of the day will be considered dead. No exceptions. I’ll see you all shortly.”

With that, the meeting ended and the Chakra forms of the Akatsuki vanished one-by-one.

Itachi looked up at Kisame. A worried look in his eyes.

“What’s the matter, Itachi?” Questioned Kisame.

“It’s nothing. Just the idea of this infection worries me.”

“Why? Afraid little old Sasuke will become one of them?”

Itachi didn’t answer, and only glared at Kisame.

“Let’s move,” he said. “We don’t want to be late.”

“… Yeah, you’re right.” Smirked Kisame as the two headed out.

What Kisame didn’t know, but suspected, was that Itachi was worried about his brother. He was with Orochimaru the last he heard. However, he didn’t know where that guy’s hideout was and even more so was worried if Sasuke could even fight back against these infected ninja. He could only hope and pray that Sasuke would make it out alive.

Pain sighed to himself as he peered out over the village before him. Konan then approached him from behind, crossing her arms.

"Do you believe Kakuzu about this infection spreading about?" She asked him.

"I do," Pain replied. "Kakuzu is not one to lie. Besides Hidan was not with him during the meeting."

"But if there truly is an infection going around. It could seriously uproot our plans."

"I know that. But we'll figure out another plan. Perhaps, we could use this infection to our advantage. But for now a regrouping is necessary."

Konan nodded, before turning and leaving Pain be to think over the group's next move.

Two guards were sitting in the guard post at the entrance to the Hidden Leaf Village. They were bored out of their minds. No visitors were coming anytime soon and it was unlikely an attack was coming too.

“Dammit!” Said one of them angrily. “I worked so hard to make jōnin and I got stuck on guard duty.”

“Hey, don’t feel so bad. You could be stuck on desk duty like some of the other jōnin. Lady Tsunade is keeping them all close to the chest, if you know what I mean.”

“R-right,” replied the other guard. “I’m just tired of this shift.”

The other guard nodded and leaned back in his chair. Before turning his head and noticing an approaching figure.

“Hey,” he said. “Looks like we got a visitor.”

“Really?” Asked the other guard.

“Yeah, he doesn’t look like a shinobi from here.”

“Why is he walking like that?” The guard questioned, referring to the man’s janky walk and his droopy arms.

“Don’t know.” Replied the other guard as he got up from his chair and stood just a few feet away from the approaching ninja. “Hey!” He called. “Are you alright?”

The infected shinobi continued approaching the guard. Not saying a word and groaning like a tired beast.

“Hey! Didn’t you hear me!?” Cried the guard.

But the infected shinobi inched closer and closer, that was when the guard noticed his ghostly white eyes, peeling skin, and oozing blood.

“What the hell!?” He cried as the infected ninja jumped onto the guard and bit down onto his neck.

Blood erupted from his neck, and coated the ground.

“What the!?” Roared the other guard as his partner cried out in pain as the zombie continued to feast on him.

The guard quickly threw a Kunai directly into the infected man’s head. It struck his brain and killed him instantly. He then groaned one final time and slumped over onto the guard’s partner.

The guard slowly approached his partner and the deceased infected ninja. He was scared out of his mind and confused. Wondering just what the hell was going on.

His partner then suddenly reanimated. His eyes rolled over and became ghostly white, his teeth became crusty and gnarly, and his skin began to fall apart into oozing slime mixed with blood. He roared at his partner, a taste for flesh being the only thing keeping him going.

The guard backed up, too scared to finish off his friend. Unbeknownst to him, but another infected shinobi was approaching him from behind.

Before he could even realize he was behind him, he slashed at the guard’s back. Piercing his skin and drawing blood.

“Gah!” Cried the guard as he flipped around and pushed the infected ninja back.

The guard hurriedly ran for the gate entrance into the Hidden Leaf Village.

“Close the gate!” He called. “Now!”

“What?” Asked another guard from the inside of the village.

“Close the damn gate! Now!”

“Close the gate!” Called one of the senior guards as the gate slowly but surely closed. Preventing the infected guard outside or any other infected ninja from getting inside.

The guard then turned around and breathed a sigh of relief against the gate door as a handful of guards approached him.

“Now, what the hell is happening?” Inoichi Yamanaka, the head of the Intelligence Division, asked.

Next to him was his daughter, Ino.

“Inoichi Sensei,” said one of the guards. “What’re you doing here?”

“I was in the neighborhood with my daughter. Now what the hell is going on here? Soldier! Why did you order the gates to be closed?”

But the man did not answer, instead, a low growl followed his breathing.

“Hey! Didn’t you hear Inoichi Sensei?” Asked a female guard as she grabbed the man’s shoulder.

Suddenly, the slashed guard flipped around and leapt at the female guard. Biting into her neck and causing blood to spray from the wound as the guard cried out in pain.

“Fall back!” Cried Inoichi. “He’s gone mad!”

The guards quickly took defensive positions as they moved backwards. Once the guard was done eating into the woman’s throat. He dropped her like a sack of potatoes. His pale white eyes staring at the other shinobi around him.

His flesh had begun to rot, oozing onto the ground with murky drops of blood. His odor was palpable and disgusting. A bit of drool dripped from his agape mouth as he growled at the ninja around him. He then charged at them.

The infection had spread far beyond Orochimaru’s hideout and had now become a problem of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Despite blocking out the infected, they managed to make their way inside. Now it was up to the high-level shinobi of the Hidden Leaf to deal with them and hope to make it out alive.

Lady Tsunade's Office, Exactly Two Minutes After Initial Infection In the Hidden Leaf Village

"Lady Tsunade!" Cried Shizune as she burst into Tsunade's office.

The Hokage was busy looking over some paperwork related to an ANBU mission. She looked up from her work at the surprised Shizune.

"Shizune?" She questioned. "What's going on?"

"My lady, there is an invasion!"

"An invasion?" Asked Tsunade in a startled manner. "Who would be bold enough to do so?"

"It's not a nation, my lady." Shizune replied.

"How do you mean? Speak up!" Tsunade barked angrily.

"The ninja are going insane!" Shizune cried. "They're ripping each other apart and becoming crazed."

Tsunade was shocked into silence. She had seen a lot in her life, but nothing like this.

"Okay, Shizune. Gather the ANBU commander and make haste. We need to stop this invasion before it gets any worse."

Suddenly, an explosion sounded off nearby. A large orange fireball cast it's burning shadow over the village.

"Go, Shizune! Now!" Tsunade called.

"R-right." Nodded Shizune as she turned and hurried out of the office.

Tsunade looked out of her office window and held her necklace in sadness.

"Please," she said. "Spare our village from whatever this is."

...

Naruto, Sakura, and Sai observed the destruction in the village from atop a buildings roof.

"What the hell is going on?" Naruto asked.

"Don't know," Replied Sai. "But we need to get these people out of here."

"Right," nodded Sakura. "I'll head to the medical center and help any injured."

"Right, we'll deal with the invasion." Said Naruto.

Sakura then zipped away. Before Kakashi suddenly appeared before the two. Catching them all off guard.

"Kakashi Sensei!" Sai called.

"Are you all okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, we're fine."

"Good," nodded Kakashi. "Wait, where's Sakura?"

"You just missed her." Replied Naruto. "She went to go help the injured at the medical center."

"Damn," Kakashi groaned.

"Kakashi Sensei, what's wrong?" Asked Naruto.

"Sai, I need you to go warn Sakura and any other ninja or civilians there to avoid anyone who is rotted or attacks with biting or scratching."

Sai was about to ask why. But he knew not to question his superior's orders. So, he hurried off in a flash with his superior's orders.

"Kakashi Sensei, please tell me what the hell is going on!" Naruto barked.

Kakashi sighed, knowing time was of the upmost essence. But he knew Naruto had to know about what was going on.

"Listen to me; this isn't a typical invasion. Something has taken over the people in the village. I don't know where this all began, but I know that any infected should be eliminated on sight."

"Infected?" Asked Naruto. "So it's like a virus?"

"Precisely. It's already gotten Shikaku and his wife. I don't know who else has been infected."

"Wow ... okay what should we do, Sensei?"

"We need to inform the Hokage about it. This information could save many lives."

"But the Hokage's tower is on the other side of the village! We'll never make it if infected ninja are everywhere."

"Don't worry, I already talked with Guy. He and his team will help us out."

"Okay," nodded Naruto. "Let's go then!"

Kakashi nodded, before the two zipped off towards the Hokage Tower.

...

Nearby, Team Guy were fighting their way through a hoard of infected ninja.

"WA-TA!" Might Guy cried out as he blew an infection ninjas head to pieces with a punch.

He then looked up, seeing Kakashi and Naruto heading for the Hokage Tower. Might Guy smirked.

"Kakashi and Naruto have made it through!" Might Guy called to his team. "Let's move forward and clear the hoard out."

"Yes, Guy Sensei!" Nodded Rock Lee and Neji.

"Help!" Called Tenten.

The team turned to see Tenten desperately fighting against a wave of infected ninja. They were fast and highly skilled ninjas before infection.

This along with the fact that Tenten's ability wasn't very effective. The vast array of her weapons didn't seem to affect the infected unless they struck the brain.

But Tenten didn't realize this soon enough and became swarmed. The rest of Team Guy tried to help, but it was too late. As an infected bit into her shoulder.

She cried out in anguish as blood spurted from the wound. The remaining infected then swarmed her and toppled her to the ground. Each taking huge bites out of her.

"Tenten, no!" Cried Rock Lee as he tried to rush in to help her.

However, Might Guy held him back by grabbing his collar.

"Guy Sensei! We have to save her!" Rock Lee said.

"I respect your bravery, Lee." Might Guy said proudly. "But ... She's gone. Kakashi said that once you're bitten, it's all over. Avoid their bites and scratches. Now let's fall back!"

The team turned away from their still screaming teammate and friend. Rock Lee cried, Neji held back his emotions but felt pity on Tenten, and Might Guy held firm. He had to in order to keep the remaining members of his team together.

They rushed deeper into the hoard before them. Hoping to finish off as many as they could.

...

On the other side of the village, untouched by the infection. Choji and Shikamaru sat inside of a restaurant. Choji was stuffing his face with rice and meet as Shikamaru watched.

"What a drag." He said. "Nothing is happening today and we didn't even get any missions today."

"Chill out," said Choji. "Getting a break every now and again is worth it."

Shikamaru sighed in annoyance as he crossed his arms.

Suddenly, Asuma burst into the restaurant.

"Everybody out!" He called. "This isn't a drill, move your assess to the medical center now!"

The restaurant staff and patrons looked at each other before scurrying outside. Leaving only Shikamaru and Choji left.

"Asuma Sensei, what's going on?" Shikamaru questioned.

"There's some kind of infection going on. I heard directly from the ANBU." He replied.

"Infection?" Asked Choji as he quickly spat out his food.

"Relax, Choji." Asuma said. "As far as we know it came from outside the village walls. Not from the food or water supply."

"Wait," said Shikamaru. "I think Ino was going flower shopping with her dad. The shop is by the village entrance!"

The trio went pale. Ino could be infected right now and they wouldn't even know it.

"Asuma Sensei," said Choji. "We need to go rescue Ino."

"No, Ino can take care of herself." Replied Shikamaru. "Especially since her father is there. It would be more advantageous to help any civilians in danger and to try and learn more about the infection."

The two were stunned. Asuma then smirked.

"Good thinking, Shikamaru." He said. "Now let's get a move on."

The two nodded, before following Asuma out of the restaurant and in the direction of the infected ninja.

Hidden Leaf Village Entrance Gate, Ten Minutes Since Initial Village Infection

Ino stood on top of the roof of a building a dozen or so feet away from the entrance gate. It had only been ten minutes, yet nearly this entire section of the village had been infected.

Dozens of ANBU and other high-level shinobi were infected. Reduced to mindless rotting corpses who were hungry for more victims to infect.

She had lost sight of her father in the scuffle. She hoped he was still alive. But she couldn't be sure.

Her flight or fight response had begun to take over. Sweat dripped from her forehead as her breathing increased.

Screaming from torn apart civilian's and nearby explosions from rogue Fireball Jutsu's filled her eardrums.

She then heard a low growling from behind her. She flipped around and found an infected Shino Aburame.

His glasses covered his sunken, glassy white eyes. But his pale and rotting skin mixed with his own blood seeping down his body gave his infection away.

Ino knew she had to take him out fast. His bugs could be infected too.

"I'm sorry, Shino." She said somberly as she placed her hands together in a jutsu formation. "Mind Reverse Body Technique!" She called as she shot out a shadow from her body and watched it strike Shino.

Instantly she was plagued by the thought's coursing through Shino's mind.

"Kill ... meee." Shino's mind told her.

Ino saw it all and felt it all. Everything Shino was experiencing as an infected. She shuddered in dread, he was still conscious in there. His body and everything surrounding it was dead. But his mind, and more importantly his chakra was still alive in this dried and peeling husk of who he once was.

"Ino!" Cried the voice of her father as he dashed in front of her and decapitated Shino in one clean strike.

"Dad, no!" Called Ino as she was forcibly ejected out of Shino's body.

"I'm sorry ... Ino, I know he was your friend but ... He's gone."

"No, he wasn't!" Ino retorted. "He was still alive in there! I read his thoughts when I possessed him with my Mind Reverse Body Technique."

Inoichi looked surprised, and then sad as he stared down at the decapitated body of Shino.

"I-I ... I couldn't have known." Inoichi thought.

He then turned to his daughter. Seeing the worried and panicked look in her eyes.

"Come on, Ino. We need to get out of here-"

"Dad, look out!" Ino cried as another infected ninja appeared from behind and bit Inoichi right on the shoulder and into his neck.

Blood sprayed from the wound and painted the infected ninja's mouth and lower jaw.

Ino wanted to cry, first Shino and now her father. But Inoichi held firm, he stabbed the infected ninja through the brain with his kunai. The ninjas body fell limply to the ground. Before Inoichi.

"Ino, this is really important. I need you to inform Lady Tsunade about how to kill these things. You have to attack their brain, other physical damage won't do anything to them."

"N-no, I won't! These people can be saved and I-"

"Listen to me!" Cried Inoichi. "You have to go, I'll take out as many as I can before I turn. But you're wasting value time!"

Ino wanted to argue further, but stayed silent. Only nodding.

"I love you ... Dad."

Inoichi smiled. "I love you too, my precious flower."

Ino held back tears as she glanced at her father one last time before turning and dashing away.

Inoichi then turned and looked down at the swarm of infected piling up against the building. He huffed as he grabbed his wounded neck and shoulder blade.

"Damn, I don't have much time left. Better make this count." He said to himself.

Inoichi then began to charge up his chakra. Building it up higher and higher, until he was glowing yellow. Completely enveloped in chakra energy.

Before he could jump off of the roof. Another infected civilian came up from behind him and bit down deeper on his neck. Pushing Inoichi over the roof and falling down with him to the infected below.

Suddenly, a huge yellow explosion erupted and consumed the area. Killing any infected in the area instantly.

Ino heard the boom from the explosion. She turned back and knew that was her father. Instead of crying, she held firm and continued on her mission to the Hokage Tower.

...

On the eastern side of the village. Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Akamaru were searching the buildings. Watching the infected swarming about. They'd kill one or two here or there. But they were searching for Shino and their team leader, Kurenai Yūhi.

"I-I don't see them a-anywhere." Hinata said.

"Ah! This is wasting time!" Cried Kiba. "We should be dealing with the swarm."

"This isn't wasting time!" Retorted Hinata. "We need as many allies as we can gather."

"Oh, yeah? Just let me and Akamaru deal with them." Kiba smirked. "We'll kill em all, right boy?"

"Woof!" Barked Akamaru confidently.

Hinata wasn't so sure about this assumption, but didn't have time to argue as a small swarm of infected civilians and ninja began to pile in from the alleyways.

"Shit!" Called Kiba. "Akamaru! Help us out!"

But no answer came.

"Akamaru! Where are you!?" Asked Kiba as he turned to search for his pet dog. But he was nowhere in sight.

"Forget him!" Called Hinata as she decapitated an infected and then stabbed another one in the brain.

Kiba grumbled to himself as he attacked the swarm. Helping Hinata take down a few more.

"Akamaru!" Kiba called in vain. "Where are you dammit!?"

A bark followed by a low growl came form behind Kiba. He flipped around, happy to hear from his old friend. His expression then turned into one of horror as he discovered that Akamaru was already infected. A large bloody bite mark on his right hip, flesh peeling off of him, a mucous colored liquid mixed with his blood dripping from his fur, and a large amount of slobber dripping down from his agape and rotted mouth.

"A-Akamaru?" Kiba said worriedly, holding his hand up defensively.

"Oh no." Said Hinata as she saw the infected Akamaru.

Akamaru then suddenly charged at Hinata, she closed her eyes and held her kunai close to her chest in an attempt to kill Akamaru. But she didn't need to, as Kiba tackled Akamaru to the ground. Hinata opened her eyes and saw Kiba wrestling with Akamaru on the ground.

"Go! Hinata, go!" Kiba called as Akamaru bit down on Kiba's throat.

Kiba called out in pain as Hinata called out his name. Screaming as she saw Akamaru rip Kiba to shreds. When he was finished, he then turned his sights onto Hinata. He growled ferociously before charging at her. Hinata prepared to fight back, but didn't need to as a figure came out of nowhere and slashed through Akamaru's neck. Decapitating the poor dog and putting him out of his misery.

Hinata's eyes widened as she saw who it was. It was Kurenai, standing proudly before her. A bloody kunai in hand from killing Akamaru.

"K-Kurenai Sensei!" Cried Hinata happily as she ran over and embraced her sensei in a hug.

"Hinata," Kurenai smiled as she held her student tightly. "How are you?" Asked Kurenai.

"I've ... been better." Hinata said. "What is happening?"

"I ... I frankly don't know." Replied Kurenai. "Where is Shino and Kiba?"

Hinata pointed to the dead body of Kiba behind her. Kurenai looked down at him somberly. Being forced to kill her student's pet dog and now witness her students dead body. It did a toll on her.

"We should get out of here, Hinata." Kurenai said.

Hinata nodded, not realizing that Kiba was rising back up to his feet. He then snarled, before lumbering towards Kurenai and Hinata.

"Kurenai Sensei!" Hinata cried as Kurenai flipped around to spot Kiba.

It was too late, she couldn't avoid his swipe. But luckily for her, a figure kicked Kiba onto his side. Kurenai and Hinata looked to see the infamous Might Guy standing proudly before them. Behind him was Rock Lee and Neji. It was a happy sight to them both, luckily there were more survivors.

Kiba suddenly got back to his feet, snarling like an animal before charging at Team Guy. However, they were ready for this. Might Guy blocked Kiba's attack, before punching him square in the face, nearly blowing his head apart. Kiba then swiped at Might Guy, but seemingly missed as Might Guy moved out of the way.

"Oh! That was very close!" Might Guy smirked. "And you're very strong, but not strong enough to handle the awesomeness of Guy Sensei!"

Might Guy then leapt into the air and spun around, performing a spinning kick to Kiba's head that completely decapitated him. Sending his head flying away as blood spurted out from his neck. Hinata nearly puked as she watched his limp body collapse to the ground.

Might Guy then looked up and saw Kurenai and Hinata standing near them. He smiled warmly at them.

"Kurenai, its good to see you." He said.

"You as well, Guy." Kurenai replied.

"So, is Hinata the only student you have left alive?" Rock Lee asked.

"Possibly, Shino is still out there somewhere." Replied Kurenai. "Is Tenten...?"

Rock Lee didn't want to answer, so Might Guy did it for him.

"She's gone," He said. "Overrun and infected. We don't know where she is now."

"What should we do now?" Asked Hinata.

"Well, we should make our way to the Hokage Tower." Might Guy replied. "I noticed Kakashi and Naruto heading there when this all began. We should follow suit."

"Right, there could be more survivors." Kurenai added. "A bigger team is better than just a handful of us after all."

"Right," nodded Might Guy. "Let's move."

The group then zipped away and began jumping from rooftop to rooftop in order to make it to the Hokage Tower. They saw the swarms of infected below them. It was a scary sight, so many innocent civilians and ninja were infected. Turned into mindless, rotting killing machines whose only drive was to feast and infect. It saddened the younger ninja, and terrified the older ones.

They were hardcore ninja's who had seen just about everything. But their training could never have prepared them for an apocalypse of this magnitude. They kept a straight face for their students, but deep down were terrified and didn't know what to do. They could only hope and pray they'd make it out alive.

...

Tsunade overlooked the destruction of her village from the rooftop of the Hokage Tower. Her and a few ANBU ninja. It saddened her to witness, but there was nothing they could do. The Leaf Village was falling, and no one, not even the great Tsunade, could stop it.

A figure suddenly poofed behind her in a cloud of smoke, the ANBU went on guard before they realized who it was. It was the legendary Toad Sage, Jiraiya. He smirked as he struck a pose.

"Jiraiya!" Said Tsunade happily.

"Hey," Jiraiya said. "Seems like everything's going down the crapper, eh?"

"Yes, it appears that way." Nodded Tsunade.

"Do you know where Naruto is?" Asked Jiraiya.

Before Tsunade could answer, Naruto and Kakashi suddenly appeared before them.

"Ah, just who I wanted to see." Smiled Tsunade. "Any intelligence on these things?" Tsunade asked Kakashi.

"Yes," nodded Kakashi. "These ... 'crazed people' are infected by some kind of virus. Whether is it a pathogen or a chemical agent I have no idea. But anyone effected by the virus, I have dubbed 'infected', so any infected must be killed on sight. No exceptions."

"I see," said Tsunade somberly. "Any idea on how to fight an infected?"

"Simple, go for the head, neck, or brain region. That'll kill them instantly." Kakashi replied. "Also, avoid their bites and scratches. That's how the infection is passed from person to person."

"Great job, Kakashi." Tsunade said before turning to the ANBU ninja, Yūgao Uzuki. "Inform all commands about this intelligence, Yūgao."

"Yes, Lady Hokage." Nodded Yūgao as she and two other ANBU disappeared.

Suddenly, a figure appeared before then all. It was Ino! A somber look fell on her face as she faced the crowd.

"Ino," said Naruto. "You're still alive!"

"Yes, but ... my father isn't." She replied.

"Was he responsible for that explosion just now?" Questioned Tsunade.

"Yes, he sacrificed himself to save me after he became infected."

"This ... isn't good." Said Kakashi. "This means a good majority of the Intelligence Division is dead or infected."

"Crap! Really?" Said Naruto.

"Jiraiya, how many of our forces do you believe are deceased or infected?" Tsunade questioned.

"At least more than half from what I saw." He said. "It's more the civilians becoming infected that's the problem."

Tsunade bit her lip in frustration. Her entire village was dying all around her and there was nothing she could do about it.

"Lady Hokage," said one of the ANBU ninjas. "What are your orders?"

Tsunade looked at the ANBU ninja and then back to the village.

"Inform all survivors. We're evacuating the village."

...

Might Guy's team were nearly at the Hokage Tower. It wouldn't be too long now. Suddenly, a large wood pillar struck Might Guy out of the air. He crashed onto the street below, a hoard begining to form around him.

"Guy Sensei!" Cried Rock Lee as the group stopped on a rooftop.

"It's okay, Lee! Keep moving forward! I'll catch up with you guys!" Might Guy called.

Rock Lee didn't want to leave his sensei behind. But a push from Kurenai forced him to. He watched Might Guy become swarmed by the hoards of zombies with a recognizable one leading the pact.

"Yamato." Might Guy said to his zombified friend as he was forced into battle.

...

Inside the medical center, Sakura worked hard. She coordinated with the other nurses and medical teams to move wounded person after wounded person into the med bays.

Sai watched over her closely, she didn't like the idea of having a bodyguard. But he was also there for the medics protection as well.

So far he had killed three infected shinobi. Their bodies were later burned to a crisp in order to prevent further infections.

In the lobby by the entrance, Asuna, Shikamaru, and Choji ran in. They had managed to avoid any infection ninja on their way there. But they knew such a luxury wouldn't last forever.

Shikamaru turned to the nurse behind the desk. Asking her where Sakura Haruno was. The nurse told him that she was busy with more wounded.

Shikamaru thanked whatever God was watching over their group. Perhaps with Sakura and the hokage's help they could create a cure for this infection.

Suddenly, a wounded ninja stepped inside. He was gripping his chest tightly. Groaning in pain.

"I need ... h-help!" He called.

"Guards! Check him!" Said a nurse, fearing possible infection.

"I've got him." Asuna said as he approached the man and helped him sit down in a nearby chair.

"What should we do now, Shikamaru?" Choji questioned.

"I guess wait for the Hokage to give us orders. We've done all we can do right now. Oh, boy. This is such a drag."

"I guess you regret wanting some excitement today, don't you?" Choji chuckled.

Shikamaru said nothing, and merely glared at him. Now was not a time for jokes, Choji knew better. Perhaps the pressure of the events unfolding hadn't registered with him yet. Or maybe they had and he simply couldn't handle it?

Shikamaru couldn't be sure, Choji was a kid at heart and always hard to get a read on. If Choji wasn't handling things, Shikamaru didn't blame him. Their ninja training did not prepare them for a situation like this.

Suddenly, two ANBU guards entered into the medical center. They then headed over to the front desk.

"Where is Captain Nonō Yakushi?" One of them asked.

"She's with a patient, alongside Ms. Haruno." Replied one of the nurses. "Why? What's going on?"

"Lady Tsunade wants everyone to evacuate the village." Replied the other ANBU. "Immediately."

"What!?" Asked one of the nurses. "We have too many wounded. It'll be impossible to move so many that fast."

"Then make it possible." Replied one of the ANBU before turning to Asuna. "Can you take command of the evacuation efforts, Asuna Sensei?"

"Hm? Yeah, sure thing." He replied as he put his hands in his pockets.

The ANBU ninja then nodded before turning and leaving with his partner. Where to? No one knew.

Shikamaru was pissed, he didn't understand how the ANBU could be so cold so as to leave them to pick up the sick and wounded.

"Hey, Asuna." Said Choji, breaking Shikamaru from his line of thinking. "Where's that wounded guy at?"

Asuna turned around and noticed he was no longer behind him. Where could he have gone?

Suddenly, a loud scream echoed throughout the halls of the medical center.

"Go! Asuna called to Shikamaru and Choji. "I'll deal with the mess here."

The two nodded, before hurrying down the hall after the source of the screaming.

...

Sakura was backed against a wall. She held a kunai tightly in her arms. There were infected ninja everywhere! Somehow an infected ninja got back there and began scratching and biting the hospital staff and any wounded patients they had back there.

Although, Sai had killed the ninja. It did little to stop the spread. Sakura analyzed her next move very carefully. Whatever she chose would be the difference between life or death.

When she found an opening, she gunned it. She raced past two infected. Before slicing another one through the mouth. She then pushed another one away from her and stabbed it in the head.

She then pulled her kunai out and faced the exit of the emergency room. There stood a figure that made her stomach churn. He was infected and the rotting and bloody decay had already set in.

It was Sai, looking at her with pale glassy eyes. A groaning sound followed. Suddenly, a sharp pain struck Sakura on her left arm.

She turned and saw an infected nurse bite down on her arm. Blood oozed from the wound as Sakura was too shocked to scream.

Her only thought was to get the damn thing away from her. So, she stabbed through her arm just a little higher than her elbow.

She didn't know if it would do anything. But it was all she could think of doing. Her vision suddenly became blurry and her hearing phasing out. Was she dying?

The last thing she saw before total darkness enveloped her were two figures running to her aid.

"S-Shikamaru? Choji?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

...

Back on the Hokage Tower, Kurenai and her group had finally arrived. Everyone looked at them with glee. Thankfully more survivors had come from this tragedy.

"Kurenai Sensei," said Tsunade. "It's so great to see you again."

"You as well, Lady Hokage." Kurenai bowed.

"Where is Guy?" Questioned Kakashi as he observed their group members.

"He's fighting an infected Yamato right now." Replied Rock Lee. "But we don't think he's infected."

"What about the rest of your team?" Asked Naruto.

"Tenten and Kiba and Akamaru are ... dead. There was nothing we could do."

Naruto felt hurt, too many of his friends were dying all around him and there was nothing he could do! It pissed him off, his Chakra flaring up as he wanted to do nothing more but kill whoever had created this virus.

"We should get out of here." Said Tsunade. "We'll make our way out through the emergency passageway."

The group nodded, before following her through the Hokage Tower and down to the first floor. Once down there, they saw a familiar figure standing with his back turned to them. He was breathing intently.

"Guy Sensei!" Cried Rock Lee as he rushed over to hug him.

"Lee, wait!" Called Neji.

But his calls went on deaf ears as Rock Lee hugged Might Guy from behind. He was so caught up in the moment that he didn't even the blood soaked scratches on his teachers back, nor did he hear Might Guys painful words.

"Lee ... run."

Chapter Text

Rock Lee held Might Guy tightly, afraid he would lose his teacher if he let go. Thus, he was unaware of the creature his teacher was becoming. However, with his Byakugan Neji noticed that Might Guy had bloody slash marks across his back.

"Lee! Get back!" Neji cried.

"What?" Rock Lee asked as Might Guy looked at him with a snarl.

He then prepared to slash at Rock Lee, before Neji intervened. Blocking the attack before pushing Might Guy aside.

"What are you doing!?" Questioned Tsunade.

"He's infected." Replied Neji as the group now saw that Might Guy was experiencing the late stages of the infection.

His eyes were sunken and ghastly pale, his skin had begun rotting, and blood began to ooze from it as well. He snarled and groaned like a rabid animal with rabies. Rock Lee could hardly hold back tears as he saw the monster his sensei had transformed into.

The ANBU ninja prepared to attack and swiftly eliminate Might Guy as they knew how dangerous he could be if left alive. They rushed in, caring little for Rock Lee's cries for them to stop and wait. One of the ANBU sliced at Might Guy's neck. However, he dodged this attack and gut checked the ninja. Another ANBU came up from behind, but Might Guy broke his neck with a single kick to the head.

"Might Guy ... isn't holding back?" Kakashi thought to himself, well aware of the strength of Might Guy.

The third and final ANBU ninja appeared in front of Might Guy, stabbing him in the abdomen with a kunai. However, Might Guy was not phased by such an attack and instead grabbed ahold of the ANBU ninja's head and bit down directly onto it. Blood and brain matter splattered against Might Guy's teeth as the ANBU screamed out in utter pain and terror before suddenly going limp.

The group of survivors were too stunned to move or do anything to stop Might Guy. Not only were they horrified to see Might Guy become this zombified husk of his former self. But also the brutality of it all shocked them to their cores. Even Ino, despite knowing that the original personalities of the infected were still inside the infected. Could not fathom how Might Guy could be so cold and brutal towards a fellow ninja.

When Might Guy was finished, he dropped the ninja's body like a sack of potatoes. Blood began to pool from the open wound on the ANBU's head. Might Guy snarled and groaned, still hungry to infect more ninja. The last remaining ANBU saw the display against his comrade and was stricken with so much fear he became still and silent. Almost like a corpse in of itself.

Might Guy scanned the shinobi before him, as if methodically picking who was next on the chopping block. He then charged at them at lightning fast speeds. But who he was going to attack next was anybody's guess.

...

Sakura woke up, her eyes blinded by the light of the sun beating down on her. She then remembered what had happened to her, she was attacked and bitten by one of the infected. Sai. Her close friend. She could mourn him later, right now she needed to figure out where the hell she was. She quickly sat up, before feeling a sharp pain in her left arm.

She looked at it and noticed blood stained white wraps around it where she had cut it off. A figure then appeared next to her, his hands grasping gently around her shoulders. She turned, prepared to kill if she had to. But that was when she realized it was Shikamaru.

"Hey, hey." He said. "Easy now, Sakura."

"What? Y-you're ... alive?" She stammered.

"We all are." Said the booming voice of Asuna.

Sakura turned to her right and saw Asuna and Choji standing next to her.

"We're just more amazed you're still alive." Said Choji. "Considering you were bit."

"Yeah, good call, Choji." Shikamaru replied.

"What do you mean?" Asked Sakura. "I'm not infected?"

"No," said Shikamaru. "We figured you had already been infected and should be put out of your misery. But Choji over there said that maybe because you cut your arm off before the infection took complete control over you that you were saved. Guess I should listen to him more often."

"So ... where are we?"

"We're on the roof of an apartment complex just a few yards away from the medical center." Asuna replied before he lit up a cigarette. "The whole place is gone, we set it on fire to kill off any infected."

Sakura's face dropped, a million different emotions running through her.

"So ... Captain Yakushi ... and everyone else are ... all ... dead?" She asked.

The group stayed quiet, letting their silence answer Sakura's question.

She wanted to cry, but she couldn't. Perhaps the gravity of the entire situation hadn't yet set in for her yet. Sai was gone, Nonō Yakushi was gone, her Medical Corps were gone. What was left?

"Hey, don't beat yourself up over this." Shikamaru said. "It was not your fault. Whoever is behind this infection caused all of this."

"Shikamaru's right," added Asuna. "We should be grateful that we're still standing."

Sakura nodded solemnly. Before a thought popped into her head.

"Wait!" She said. "Where is Ino?"

"We don't know." Said Choji.

"What!? What do you mean you don't know!? She's one of your teammates!" Sakura angrily yelled into Choji's face.

"Last we heard she was by the entrance gate with her father." Shikamaru replied. "But it's possible she could still be alive somewhere in the village."

"Then we have to search for her." Sakura replied. "If she's in danger she could use our help."

"Perhaps," nodded Asuna. "But I think we should regroup at the Hokage Tower."

"Why?" Asked Sakura.

"Because some asshat ANBU told us that Lady Tsunade has issued an evacuation order for the entire village." Shikamaru replied.

"Really?" Questioned Sakura. "The infection is that bad?"

"Apparently." Replied Asuna. "We need to move, quickly."

Asuna then put out his cigarette before leading his team of survivors away. Shikamaru could tell that something was bothering Asuna, he was obviously worried about Ino like the rest of them. But he was also likely worried about Kurenai. Where was she at during all of this? Probably out with her team too. But the group couldn't be sure, they could only hope Lady Tsunade could get them out of this chaos.

...

Might Guy leapt at the group, his clawing hand reaching out for a certain Hokage. She doubted she could move out of the way of this attack. However, she didn't need to as a figure blocked the attack for her. It was Shizune, using her back as a shield for the Hokage. Tsunade's eyes widened as she witnessed Might Guy dig his hand into Shizune's back.

Nobody dared to move a muscle, too shocked by the moment. Suddenly, Neji moved to push Might Guy aside. The infected ninja stumbled back, before being punched in the chest by Neji, sending him skidding away. Neji chased after him, with Rock Lee calling out to him to stop.

"I'll get him." Kakashai said as he dashed after Might Guy and Neji.

Tsunade held Shizune in her hands. A small trickle of blood dripped down her lip as she stared up at her mentor. Tears flowed down Tsunade's eyes as she could hardly speak, too stricken by the fact her closest confidante had become infected by this unknown virus.

"It's ... okay, Lady Tsunade." Shizune said. "I'll ... I'll see Dan soon, tell him you miss him."

"Sh-Shizune." Tsunade said as Shizune went limp in her hands.

She cried out a no as Naruto and Ino pulled her away from Shizune. Not wanting to risk her getting infected as well. Jiraiya then approached Shizune's body, before pulling out a kunai and stabbing her through the head with it. Thus preventing her from becoming infected. Tsunade couldn't speak, too stricken with grief and sadness to even form words. Her mouth was open, but nothing came out of it.

"Let's move," ordered Jiraiya. "We need to get out of here."

The group nodded, helping Tsunade to her feet and helping to shuffle her away from Shizune's body. They headed deeper into the village, hoping to catch up with Neji and Kakashi after they had taken care of Might Guy.

...

Kakashi had finally caught up with Neji, who had pushed Might Guy into a nearby shop. He wanted to pursue further, but couldn't as more infected civilians appeared out of nowhere and began to surround him. Luckily for him, Kakashi appeared to help fight off the infected. He used Kamui to send a multitude of the infected to the Kamui Demension.

Kakashi then grabbed his Sharingan eye in pain, collapsing to the ground. Before Neji could do anything to help him, Might Guy appeared behind him and attacked him. Fortunately, Neji avoided his bites and grabs and managed to push him off of his back. He then reached into his pockets, hoping to find a spare kunai. However, he found no such luck. He cursed himself, how could he not have a spare one on deck?

So, as Might Guy charged at him. He did the only thing he could do, use his Eight Trigrams Spirit Sixty-Four Palms technique on Might Guy. Might Guy was battered with countless blows, before being sent flying through the shop building and crashing into another one behind him. Neji then rushed through the hole in the building, using precise blows to decapitate a few more infected civilians that stood around the area before charging at Might Guy.

However, Might Guy saw this coming and instantly opened into the Third Gate. Neji skidded to a stop, surprised that the infect Might Guy could even still perform such a move. He tried to stand his ground, but Might Guy was too fast for him. Attacking him with quick and powerful blows that threatened to kill him with every connection.

"So ... strong." Thought Neji as Might Guy punched him in the abdomen before attempting to bite down on his neck.

However, a kunai went zipping past Neji's head and into Might Guy's shoulder. He flew back, before catching himself and skidding to a stop. Neji turned around and saw Kakashi standing behind him.

"I'm not ... dead yet." He gasped as Might Guy stood tall, groaning and snarling with anger at Kakashi's interruption of his meal.

"I might need a little help, Kakashi Sensei." Neji told him as he and Kakashi stood side-by-side.

"No worries, this one is a tough ninja." Kakashi replied.

"We need to take him out quickly, before he uses anymore Gates."

"I know," nodded Kakashi before his eyes widened and his strength increased dramatically. "First Gate open!" He cried.

"What the!?" Cried Neji in surprise. "You ... you know the Eight Gates technique?"

"Only the First Gate, I never got the chance to master the others." Kakashi replied. "I'm going to need everything I've got in order to defeat Might Guy."

He and Neji then took battle stances as Might Guy picked who he was going to attack first. It was agony waiting for him to choose, but neither Kakashi or Neji could be hasty. This was no ordinary ninja, this was Might Guy they were fighting. A savage and brutal variant of him that could use the Eight Gates to their maximum potential. Likely without any strain or pain to his deteriorated body as it was already dead in a sense.

Suddenly, Might Guy chose his prey. It was to be Neji, he zipped at him at speeds Neji alone would've never picked up on. It was lucky for him that Kakashi could see Might Guy coming. He instantly coated his arm in lighting, a sigh he was using the Chidori technique. He dashed at Might Guy, ready to intercept him and pierce right through his chest.

However, before Might Guy could lay a hand on Neji. He stopped, jumped in the air, and struck Kakashi in the face with a spinning kick. Kakashi went stumbling to the ground, before a boom went off in his face. The result of the Chidori hitting the ground. He flew onto his back, his ears ringing. Luckily, he was uninjured. But he could hardly do anything in his dazed and weakened state.

He coughed on the ground, amazed that Might Guy had seen him coming and had changed targets so suddenly. But that was when Kakashi realized he hadn't changed targets.

"I was always the target, he just outwitted me." Kakashi thought.

It was inconceivable, how could a mindless infected like Might Guy pull off such a move? Unless of course he still had some of his intelligence still inside of the rotting and infected husk he called a body.

Kakashi stood up, he had to protect Neji. He couldn't let more ninja he cared about become infected slaves to this plague. But as the dust cleared, he noticed Neji and Might Guy's figures. Neji was holding off Guy as best as he could, although, he was pinned to a wall. Might Guy snarled like a crazed animal, just inches away from touching Neji with his finger nails.

Kakashi moved quickly, enveloping his arm in lighting once more. Before pulling his fist back and launching a Chidori at the center of Might Guy's body. It pierced right through him, barely missing Neji in front of him. Kakashi then pulled his arm back as the attack dissipated. Might Gut stumbled back, a bloody hole in his chest now remained. He moved like a limp doll, with both Kakashi and Neji unsure if he was really out of the fight for good.

Might Guy looked around the area, leaving Kakashi and Neji confused as to what he was doing. Suddenly, a Might Guy puncturing his chest with his thumb as a red aura sparked around him. Shocking Kakashi with the sight.

"The Eighth Gate! No, it can't be!" He thought.

Might Guy zipped across the battle ground, charging at Neji. Kakashi knew there was no way he could stop him. Watching in horror as Might Guy bit Neji on his neck. Blood sprayed from the wound as Neji cried out in anguish. He knew he was going to die and become infected. But that did not mean he had to go down quietly.

So, Neji performed once last attack onto the infected Might Guy. A punch right onto his face, cracking his skull inwards and indenting his face as he went flying onto his back. Neji then slowly collapsed to the ground, gasping for air as blood filled his throat and lungs. Kakashi looked at the scene somberly, two good friends were now gone. Acting quickly, Kakashi approached Neji. Standing over him sadly.

"You fought well, Neji." Kakashi said. "The Hyūga Clan will be proud of you."

With that, Kakashi threw a kunai into Neji's head. Killing him instantly as his body slumped over. Blood soon began to leak and pool from his mouth. Kakashi then turned to Might Guy, still hearing a faint groaning sound from him. Kakashi wondered how any part of him could still be alive after all of the punishment he had suffered.

"You did that as a last resort." Kakashi said to him. "You knew you were going to die and thus took Neji with you." Might Guy said nothing as Kakashi lifted a foot over his head. "Goodbye, my friend."

Kakashi then stomped on Might Guy's head, turning it into bloody paste on the ground. Kakashi then turned and zipped away as a wave of infected civilians and ninja began heading his way. He had to regroup with the others. He wouldn't let more of his friends and allies become victims to this infection. The death would stop here as far as he was concerned. If only he could back up such a declaration.

...

Asuna and his team continued to patrol over the waves of infected through the rooftops. Hoping to reach the Hokage Tower in time. Suddenly, they heard a loud battle cry nearby.

"Rasengan!" Called the voice.

"Rasengan?" Said Sakura. "That might be Naruto!"

"Quick, lets help him out." Commanded Asuna as they headed down to the source of the battle cry.

They headed down to the ground, seeing a small figure fighting off a few infected ninja. Asuna threw a kunai into the back of one of the heads of the infected. Shikamaru and Choji hurried into battle, using their own kunai and physical strength to decapitate the other infected ninja. Once they were all dead, the group stared on at the person they had saved.

"Konohamaru!?" Cried Sakura.

"Sup?" He asked.

"We thought you were Naruto." Said Shikamaru.

"Oh, well, thanks." Konohamaru replied sarcastically.

"Where's the rest of your team?" Asuna asked him.

Konohamaru fell silent. Looking down at the ground.

"They ... they got taken down by those infected." He said sadly.

"How did you survive?" Asked Choji before they heard a groan behind them.

The group turned around, seeing a kunai stabbed through an infected ninja's head. There stood Anko Mitarashi, the Chūnin Exams Proctor. She smirked at the group as she removed her kunai from the infected ninja's head.

"Anko Sensei?" Asked Choji. "You're still alive?"

"Yep, I was near the Forest of Death when the infection began." She replied. "I was surprised by an infected Ebisu, but I managed to take him down. Then I headed into the village to see if I could find anyone else who had survived. Luckily, I ran into Konohamaru here when I did. Otherwise he would've been toasted like his friends were."

Konohamaru was saddened to be reminded of the fate of his friends. Seeing this, Asuna patted his back, trying to console him.

"Anko, do you know if anyone is still alive?" Asked Sakura.

"No, I don't." She replied. "Why?"

"Because Lady Tsunade has apparently ordered a full evacuation." Choji replied.

"What? This infection crap is that bad?" Anko asked.

"Seems like it." Said Shikamaru. "This is such a dra-"

"Don't start, Shikamaru." Asuna said. "Now; let's move!"

The group then zipped away, hoping to catch up with the rest of the Konoha survivors. That is, if they were still alive.

...

Tsunade and her group had managed to get closer and closer to the edge of the village. Soon they would be safe from all of this carnage. At least, they hoped they would be. Suddenly, Naruto stopped. Ino stopped as well and turned to him. It appeared as if he was caught in a trance-like state.

"N-Naruto? Why are you stopping?" She asked. "Come on!"

Naruto didn't respond, only pointing towards a destroyed restaurant. Underneath the rubble was a hand, and a figure standing over said hand. It was Ayame, the daughter of the village's ramen chef, Teuchi. Ayame was crying, tears streaming down her face as she overlooked the scene. Unbeknownst to her, but an infected civilian was slowly approaching her from the side.

"Ayame! Watch out!" Naruto cried as he rushed into help her.

He leapt at the infected man, pulling out a kunai and slicing his head clean off. It rolled for a bit on the ground as blood spurted out from its neck. The infected man's body then collapsed to the ground. Naruto turned to Ayame, putting his kunai back and asking her if she was okay.

"Y-yes, I'm okay." Said Ayame. "Th-thank you, Naruto."

"Don't mention it." Replied Naruto before he looked down at the hand crushed underneath the destroyed restaurant. "Was that..."

"Yes," nodded Ayame. "My father."

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Naruto lamented.

"Hey, Naruto." Ino said as she approached the two. "We've got to get going."

Naruto nodded at Ino before looking down at Ayame.

"Hey, Ayame. Granny Tsunade and the other survivors are going to evacuation the village. Would you like to come with us?"

Ino smacked Naruto over the head.

"Its not like she has much of a choice, Naruto!" Ino cried as Naruto rubbed his head.

"Right ... right, good point." He replied.

Suddenly, a figure's footsteps could be heard behind the trio. They flipped around, expecting to find more infected ninja. However, they found Kakashi standing behind them.

"Kakashi Sensei!" Cried Naruto. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, I'm a little exhausted, but otherwise I'm okay." He replied.

"Did ... did you take care of Might Guy?" Asked Ino.

"Yes," nodded Kakashi. "Neji too."

"Wait! Neji is dead?" Naruto asked.

Kakashi nodded silently. The group held their heads down somberly, saddened to hear that another shinobi and close friend had kicked the bucket. People seemed to be dropping like flies around here. The group knew they would be next if they stayed. So, they hauled ass out of there. Racing to catch up with the rest of their group near the outskirts of the village.

...

Asuna and his team were busy heading to the Hokage Tower. Racing across rooftops to make it in time to meet with Lady Tsunade. Suddenly, Shikamaru noticed a few figures racing across the rooftops just a few yards away from them.

"Asuna! Stop!" Shikamaru cried as the group suddenly stopped.

"What's up?" Asked Asuna.

"I just saw some people darting across the rooftops over there. Perhaps we should join them, they could lead us to Lady Tsunade."

"Good eye, Shikamaru." Smiled Asuna as he directed the group to follow after them.

...

Kakashi, Naruto, Ino, and Ayame finally made it to the edge of the village. Making it to the cliffside of the Hokage Rock. There they found Tsunade and the others overlooking the destroyed Hidden Leaf Village below them with sadness.

"Lady Tsunade!" Said Kakashi as they all bowed before her.

"Kakashi, its great to see you." Kurenai said before noticing someone was not with them. "Where is Neji?" She asked.

"He ... became infected, I had to put him down." Replied Kakashi.

Hinata's eyes widened.

"No... No!" She bellowed, tears streaming down her face as she collapsed to her knees.

Naruto quickly ran up to comfort her, rubbing her back as the other survivors looked down at the ground somberly. All except for Rock Lee, who seemed shocked into silence. As if the reality of his death hadn't yet been realized by him, or maybe it was due to him losing his entire team in one day. First Tenten, then Might Guy, and finally Neji. Another friend and shinobi had been killed. How many more had to die before this was all over? If it even had an end to it at all.

Jiraiya then approached Tsunade, rubbing her shoulder gently.

"I know you're probably beating yourself up inside, Tsunade. But this wasn't your doing." He told her.

Tsunade didn't answer, instead she pulled away from Jiraiya. She then faced the group and put her hands on her hips. She was about to speak, before a group of ninja appeared next to the group. It was Asuna and his team. The group was surprised, more survivors!? Kurenai quickly rushed to Asuna, embracing him in a tight hug and kissing him all over. Ino also embraced her teammates, having never been happier to see that they were alive.

Naruto also embraced Konohamaru in a hug, glad his student and friend was still among the living. He even comforted him about the loss of his own friends and teammates. Sakura then approached Naruto, who was caught off guard upon seeing her bandaged arm.

"Sakura," he said as he stood up. "What happened to you?"

"I got bit, but I managed to stop the spread of the infection."

The group was surprised, Sakura had been bitten? Kakashi instantly went into action, holding a kunai mere inches away from Sakura's head.

"Wait!" Called Asuna. "She's okay, Kakashi. She's been with us the whole time and hasn't turned yet. I think she's in the clear."

Kakashi sighed, before pulling his arm back.

"I'm sorry, Sakura." He said. "I'm ... under a little stress right now."

Sakura nodded. "It's okay," she said. "We all are."

"Wait, where's Sai?" Asked Naruto.

"Infected." Replied Sakura bluntly.

Ino began to cry upon hearing this. Holding feelings for Sai, but now she could never tell him about them. Adding onto the losses was her father. She had watched him die right in front of her and now she had lost another person dear to her heart. Tsunade sighed and looked at the ground before turning to look at the village. She then turned back to her group of survivors. All of whom had lost someone in this disaster.

"We are the last remaining citizens of the Hidden Leaf Village. With that said; we should assume anyone who is not with us currently is ... dead or infected."

A cold shiver ran down the spines of the group. They couldn't believe Tsunade's words. They were all that remained of the Hidden Leaf Village. A once populous and powerful nation of the world, reduced to a handful of ninja in a matter of hours.

"No!" Naruto suddenly cut in.

"No?" Asked Tsunade, clearly taken aback.

"We have to look for more survivors, Granny!" He told her.

"Naruto's right," nodded Sakura. "My parents are still down there."

"So are mine." Added Shikamaru.

"And Iruka Sensei!" Continued Konohamaru.

"Shut up!" Tsunade barked.

The entire group was instantly silenced by Tsunade's demanding voice.

"No one, and I mean, no one is going down there. They're all dead. Every ... last ... one of them." Tsunade continued. "No exceptions."

"That's crap!" Choji cried. "We can't just leave them to die."

Kakashi suddenly stood in front of Choji, glaring at him.

"We will do what the Hokage says." He told him. "She is still our leader even if there is no village left to lead."

The Konoha 11 weren't exactly thrilled to hear of this news. Neither was Jiraiya. He could see darkness was clouding Tsunade's heart, a result of Shizune's death no doubt. But at the same time, Jiraiya didn't exactly want to come into conflict with her. Too much had happened for him to want to challenge her in these terrible times. However, Jiraiya told himself that he would keep an eye on her after this.

"So, Grand Lady Hokage." Shikamaru said mockingly as he put his hands in his pockets. "Where to now? If we can't exactly go back to the village."

Tsunade glared at him, insulted by his tone of voice and attitude.

"Maybe we should find the other nations and see if this is affecting them." Sakura replied.

Tsunade nodded. "I agree. We should head to the Hidden Sand Village first since we have great relations with them and Lord Gaara will be an excellent asset for us in the fight against these infected."

The group were all in agreement. Tsunade smiled, before looking over the Hidden Leaf Village one last time.

"As of now, we are no longer the Konoha 11." She said. "We are all the Konoha Survivors."

"What a badass name." Thought Shikamaru.

"Now, we move out!" Tsunade ordered as the group began their long trek to the Hidden Sand Village.

They had all been deeply affected by this virus in more ways than one. Most of their loved ones and friends were dead, infected, or missing. Leaving them as the only remaining survivors as far as they knew at least.

...

Underground, a considerable distance away from the Hidden Leaf Village was where the secretive black-ops organization known as Root operated. Danzo sat in his throne, a way of mocking the Hokage in his eyes. He and a majority of his organization had stayed underground in order to protect themselves from the infection. Not caring for what happened to those above ground.

Suddenly, a member of Root appeared and bowed before Danzo. It was Torune Aburame, a high-ranking member of the organization.

"Torune," said Danzo. "How is the infection proceeding?"

"The entire village has been destroyed, Lord Danzo." Replied Torune. "Lady Tsunade has issued an evacuation order for the entire village. Some survivors have escaped the village. Among them is the Hokage and some top Jōnin."

"I see," replied Danzo. "As to be expected from a coward like the Hokage herself."

"Sir, among the infected was Sai. However, he is now dead." Continued Torune.

"A small loss." Danzo replied casually. "What is most important is that we can rebuild the village after this is over. Do we have any agents tailing the survivors who have escaped the village?"

"No, sir. Do you want them to be followed?"

"... Keep an eye on them. But put more agents in the village. I want you and the others to rescue any further survivors and bring them here. We will keep them here until this whole thing blows over. Then once it is over I and the Root will take command of the Hidden Leaf from Tsunade and rebuild it."

"Yes, sir." Nodded Torune before he left in a flash.

Danzo leaned back in his chair. He didn't know how long this infection would last, so he had to play his cards right. He would keep an eye on the survivors of this village and eventually any others. He knew he could use this infection to his advantage, it was only a matter of time before the dominos fell into place.

...

In the Hidden Rain Village, Pain and Konan awaited atop their tower. Overlooking the entire village from above. Pain suddenly perked up, before turning to Konan.

"Itachi and Kisame are here." He said. "Deidara and Tobi are not too far behind them."

"What about Kakazu and Zetsu?" Asked Konan.

"Here I am." Said Zetsu suddenly as he appeared behind the two.

"When did you get here? We didn't detect you." Pain replied in a startled tone.

"Apologies, but I have been sneaking around on my way here. Monitoring." Zetsu replied.

"You mean spying?" Konan questioned.

"No, not exactly. I wanted to observe your security measures as well as how the infection has increased."

"Well, inform us about that when the rest of the Akatsuki gets here." Pain glared.

"Understood," nodded Zetsu.

The trio waited around, watching the tiny figures of Itachi, Kisame, Deidara, and Tobi move about down below and make their way up to the tower. A fifth figure soon followed behind them, one Pain identified as Kakazu. He followed their trail, walking up the steps of the tower before entering into the room where the three were.

"Ah, so this is the mighty Pain. Our glorious leader." Kisame smirked in a mocking tone.

"Normally, I like to keep things on the down low. Moving about in two man teams. However, this ... infection problem causes many hiccups for our plan."

"Indeed," said Itachi. "We cannot capture more Jinchūriki with these infected persons roaming around."

"Right, nodded Pain. "So I have decided to postpone our original goal of attaining the Jinchūriki and instead search for the cause of this infection and use it to our advantage."

"How so?" Questioned Deidara.

"Well, the original plan was to use the Ten Tails Jinchūriki to cause world-wide devastation. In turn, ending war with a huge war that will make every nation think twice before starting another war with one another. However, with this infection going around we can in turn use it to cause world devastation and then once it is all over we can claim responsibility for it and use it as a means to warn the nations of the world to not go to war again or else we'll unleash the infection on the world again."

The members of the Akatsuki were surprised by Pain's plan, especially Tobi. Who smirked wickedly at Pain's evilness underneath his mask. Only Zetsu wasn't so sure about this plan, fearing it would prevent him from achieving his ultimate goal within this organization.

"Pardon me," said Deidara. "But how will we stop this infection and recreate it if we don't even know where this came from?"

"I have a few theories on who is behind it." Pain replied.

"That being?" Asked Kisame.

"Well, there is only one ninja I know that is well known for creating various kinds of medical creations and bio agents. Orochimaru."

The Akatsuki were surprised to hear his name again. The only man to ever leave the Akatsuki. He was known by all and feared by some within the group.

"Are you absolutely sure?" Itachi asked, a hint of worry in his voice due to Sasuke.

"I am very positive. We know of some of Orochimaru's bases. We shall investigate them and see if we can track him down."

"To what? Kill him? Because we should've done that years ago." Kisame said angrily.

"No, killing him solves nothing." Itachi said.

"Itachi is right," continued Pain. "We will use him to create a cure as well as copy this infection for further use in the future. Then we will dispose of him and any other assets relating to him, in order to cover up the fact that we did not originally create the infection."

The Akatsuki seemed to generally agree with Pain's plan. However, the only exceptions were Tobi and Zetsu, who had plans of their own that they wanted to see through to fruition. However, they had to put those plans on hold. To see if they could further develop them and achieve them despite the rising infection.

"Who will go with you to search for Orochimaru?" Asked Kakazu.

"I will take everyone, except for Konan and Kakazu." Pain replied.

"What?" Asked Konan. "But sir, why not bring all of us with you?"

"Simple, I need capable ninja to guard the Hidden Rain Village for me. I cannot risk leaving this village unguarded."

"I see," nodded Konan.

"Besides, Kakazu has found himself immune to the infection. So, he will assist you in guarding the village." Pain continued.

"It will be done." Kakazu replied as he eyed up Konan.

"Good, now the rest of us will prepare to move out for Orochimaru." Pain said. "But first, Zetsu, you said you have been monitoring the spread of the infection, correct?"

"Yes," nodded Zetsu.

"How is it proceeding?" Pain asked.

"Well, the infection has spread to further parts of the world. Including the Land of Fire and the Land of Water. However, passed that I haven't found it to be spreading very prevalently anywhere else."

Pain nodded. "Keep an eye on things, Zetsu."

"Of course, sir." He replied.

Pain then signaled for his chosen Akatsuki members to follow him. They headed down the tower until they reached ground level. They ran through the rain, its wetness pitter patting off of their cloaks. Once they finally crossed the border of the Hidden Rain Village, they each felt a small chill go down their spines. They knew they were in dangerous territory now. The infected were all over the place and any of them could become another infected amongst their ranks.

They had to be careful, one wrong move could spell disaster for their group. They could only hope to make it through the lands and towards Orochimaru's hideout without incident. Hope was all they had going for them.

Chapter Text

It had been a little over an hour since the Village Hidden in the Leaves was destroyed. Completely overrun by an infectious plague that desired to destroy the world. Most of the shinobi there hadn't fully accepted what had happened, and those that did said nothing. Rock Lee and Tsunade were taking it especially hard. Everyone there could see that, especially Jiraiya. He hated seeing his old friend so cold and clouded by darkness.

He also hated seeing Naruto so down. Lord only knew what was running through that boy's head. So, he approached him and placed a hand on his back. Naruto looked up at Jiraiya, seeing him smile down at him.

"Hey, bud. How're you holding up." Jiraiya asked him.

"I ... don't really know." Naruto replied. "Its ... all so sudden."

Jiraiya nodded. "That's the truth ain't it. I haven't seen such destruction like this since the Second Great Ninja War."

"Do ... do you think Gaara is alive, and Sasuke too?" Naruto asked.

"I don't know." Jiraiya sighed. "But we can't think like they are dead unless we confirm it. Besides, they're very powerful shinobi. If we can survive this then so can they."

Naruto nodded. He agreed with what Jiraiya said, as Jiraiya wouldn't sugar coat the truth, even for his star pupil. Kakashi also agreed with what Jiraiya was saying, however, his outlook was much more grim. He felt that he had failed to protect Neji back at the village and so would rather just assume his student was dead then try to save him and fail once more.

"This is such a drag." Shikamaru said with his hands in his pockets as he walked alongside Ino and Choji. "And I mean that wholeheartedly."

"Awe, come on man." Said Choji. "Be lucky we have each other right now. It could be way worse."

The trio then turned to Rock Lee. Who had been dead silent since leaving the village. He had lost everything. His sensei, his friends, his family. All gone. He was essentially alone now. Seeing this, Ino decided to approach him. Placing a hand on his back.

"Hey, Lee. How're you holding up?"

"I'm ... doing okay." He replied.

"Well, maybe if you trained some more it would get your mind off of things." Ino said.

"I don't feel like it. What's the point? Strength doesn't matter against these infected ninja. Might Guy and Neji found that out the hard way."

"Look, Lee." Ino said. "You can't let their deaths hold you back. If you do, then their sacrifices were for nothing."

Rock Lee nodded, agreeing with Ino. However, his demeanor was still cold. Causing Ino to rub his back in an effort to comfort him some more.

As the group continued walking, a guttural groan echoed through the woods. Instantly everyone went silent and went on guard. Fearing an attack from a number of infected shinobi.

"Anyone got eyes?" Tsuande asked the group.

"Negative." Replied Kakashi.

Suddenly, Jiraiya turned and saw a mangled infected civilian approaching the group from the dense forest. His skin was pale and peeling off, his eyes ghostly white, and his teeth mangled and yellow. He groaned as he limped over to the group.

"I've got one!" Jiraiya called as he began charging up a Rasengan in the palm of his hand. "Its a civilian, stay back!" He called as he rushed in and blew the infected man to pieces with his Rasengan.

The broken and bloody body went flying into a tree, before slumping to the ground. Everyone scanned the environment, making sure there was no other infected ninja. When they discovered the coast was clear, they finally put their guard down.

"Where do you think he came from?" Asked Kakashi.

"I don't know." Replied Jiraiya. "But he couldn't be from the Hidden Leaf Village. That's too far from here."

"I think I know where he came from." Said Tsunade as she got closer to Jiraiya and Kakashi.

"You do?" Questioned Kakashi.

"Mhm." Nodded Tsunade. "He's likely from the Tanzaku Quarters."

"Tanzaku Quarters?" Questioned Jiraiya.

"Isn't that where we found you Granny?" Naruto asked.

"Yes," replied Jiraiya.

"We should investigate, just to see if there's any survivors." Said Shikamaru.

"No!" Barked Tsunade. "We can't risk losing more of our group."

"Oh, come on, Granny!" Naruto yelled. "We have to protect them if there are further survivors."

"No, it's too risky." Tsunade replied.

"What if only some of our group went?" Questioned Jiraiya. "I mean we'll never make it to the Hidden Sand Village before dark. So some of us can set up a temporary camp here for the night and the rest of us will investigate the Tanzaku Quarters."

Tsunade held her chin in thought. Not wanting to risk losing more members of the group. But as she looked at Jiraiya, she felt she could trust his judgement.

"Alright Jiraiya, you have my permission to go." She said. "But only take a few members with you."

"Got it." He nodded, before turning to the rest of the group. "Okay; Naruto, Ino, Shikamaru, and Lee will accompany me to the Tanzaku Quarters."

The chosen group then formed around Jiraiya. All of whom had brushed their fears aside for this mission.

"Okay, you have until tomorrow morning to return." Tsunade declared. "If you don't return by then we'll assume you are dead. Good luck."

"Thanks," Jiraiya nodded. "Alright, let's move out!" He ordered as the group zipped away.

Tsunade then turned to the group.

"Alright, let's find some place high to build our camp. Staying on the ground level can only spell disaster."

"Copy that." Nodded Kakashi as he began organizing the group to work.

...

Far away, the members of the Akatsuki were hurrying through the lands. Pain led the charge, helping the group to fight off the hoards of infected ninja they had been encountering.

"Damn," said Kisame as he crushed the head of an infected. "These friggin things are everywhere."

"We must be getting closer." Pain said.

"You know; I've been meaning to ask you something." Itachi said.

"That being?" Asked Pain.

"How do you know where Orochimaru's hideout is?"

Pain huffed. "Do you think I have not been keeping a keen eye on Orochimaru?"

"What do you mean?" Asked Itachi.

"Well, ever since he left the Akatsuki, I've been keeping an eye on his whereabouts. In order to keep him in line and make sure he does not disrupt our plans. But now I guess it doesn't matter since our original plans have changed."

Itachi nodded, before he and the rest of the Akatsuki members followed Pain along the lands. However, deep down Itachi did not agree with Pain's motivations for continuing to let the infection spread. He was also worried about Sasuke's fate. If the infection really did start with Orochimaru, then Sasuke could perhaps be one of these infected. It was then that he decided that when the time was right, he would branch out on his own in order to search for Sasuke.

...

Jiraiya and his team had made it through the dense woods. Eventually stumbling upon an abandoned dirt path. The lands were eerily quiet, not one animal made a sound. There were also very few remnants of a civilized world out here. It creeped out the members of Jiraiya's team.

"Let's keep moving." Jiraiya said.

The group nodded, following closely behind their team leader. As they walked, Shikamaru decided to strike up a conversation, in order to lighten the mood for the crew.

"Hey, is it just me or ... does Lady Tsuande seem a bit ... on edge?" He said.

"Yeah, but you would be too if you lost someone close to you." Ino spat.

"Hey! What's that supposed to mean? I probably lost my parents back there."

"We all lost someone." Rock Lee said somberly.

"Right, but ... I don't know, I feel like she's super cold now." Shikamaru continued. "Its just super ... I don't know ... concerning."

"Yeah, and Kakashi Sensei is like her right-hand man now." Naruto said. "He's become like her little enforcer."

Jiraiya sighed. "I agree with you all. I've been keeping an eye on Lady Tsunade."

"You have?" Asked Shikamaru.

"Yes," he replied. "At first I wondered if it was just me. But now I realize that she has become increasing cold since Shizune's passing. Which makes me believe that her leadership can be called into question."

"Do you really think so, Jiraiya Sensei?" Asked Ino.

"Oh, absolutely." Jiraiya replied. "The only question is; what should we do should she get out of her line with her leadership decisions? How many innocent people have to die because she's too afraid to fight back?"

Naruto put a hand to Jiraiya's back.

"Let's just investigate Tanzaku Quarters, Pervy Sage. Then we'll worry about Granny Tsunade."

Jiraiya nodded. He knew now was not the right time to deal with Tsunade. Especially so closely after they had just escaped certain death in the Hidden Leaf Village. For now they would focus their energy on investigating the Tanzaku Quarters.

After what felt like an eternity of walking, the group finally managed to see the fabled Tanzaku Quarters in the distance. They hurried towards it, before noticing a large smoke cloud plooming from the village itself.

"Oh, no ..." said Naruto in shock.

"They must've been hit hard too." Said Ino.

"What should we do, Sensei?" Questioned Shikamaru.

Jiraiya thought for a moment, before turning his head to the group.

"We'll proceed with caution. Stay on high alert and move together as a unit."

"Copy that." Nodded the group as they followed Jiraiya into the village.

...

Back at camp, Tsunade oversaw the construction of the temporary base. She held her hands behind her back sternly as she watched her ninja move about. Nearby, Ayame had set up a small pile of firewood where she began to cook some spare meat she had on hand. It popped and sizzled against the firewood, filling the area with an arousing smell.

As Tsunade continued watching the group put together the camp, Sakura approached Tsunade.

"Sensei." She said.

"Ah, Sakura." Smiled Tsunade. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm doing alright, Lady Tsunade. I don't even really feel my injured arm anymore."

"That's good." Smiled Tsunade.

"Is there anything the team needs help with? I'd love to help out around-"

"No, we have it under control." Tsunade replied warmly.

"... Oh ... um, okay then." Sakura replied, before Tsunade walked away from her.

Sakura was a bit put off by her sensei's tone towards her. Why was she being so cold towards her? Perhaps it was because of Shizune's death. But that wasn't Sakura's fault. In any case, Sakura was still reeling from her injuries and her losses. Perhaps she should merely take things easy and rest for the time being. Patiently waiting for Jiraiya's team to return.

...

Inside of the village, Jiraiya's team found the place to be empty. It was like a ghost town. Buildings were raided, scraps lay across the streets, and the smell of smoke from a nearby fire filled the air.

"Where is everyone?" Asked Ino.

"They probably fled." Shikamaru replied. "I just hope no one is left here."

"Shush!" Called Jiraiya. "Shut it and stay on guard."

The group obediently clamped their jaws shut as they continued to investigate the village.

Suddenly, a figure appeared from around the alleyway between two buildings. Latching onto Jiraiya. He wrestled with the infected man, before throwing him to the ground. Naruto acted quickly and threw a kunai into the infected man's head. Killing him instantly.

"Are ... are you okay, Jiraiya?" Asked Naruto.

"Yeah." Nodded Jiraiya. "That guy came out of nowhere."

"Perhaps we should bail." Suggested Ino. "Not to be a coward or anything. But I'd much rather not become a zombified husk of myself."

Jiraiya nodded. "You're right, this village is a lost cause."

"Oh, come on!" Called Rock Lee. "We came all the way out here and at the first sign of danger we bail?"

"Look, I-"

"Yeah! Lee's right." Said Shikamaru. "We can't just bail if there are any survivors."

"Does it look like there's any survivors!?" Called Naruto angrily.

"Whoa ... Naruto, what's your deal?" Ino asked.

Naruto sighed, trying to calm down.

"Look, its way to easy to be killed by these damn things. This place is obviously a lost cause. We should just retreat and return to the rest of the group."

"Nartuo's right." Nodded Jiraiya. "Let's move."

As the group begrugingly turned around to leave. An explosion rang out, causing a few buildings to collapse forwards and block the path ahead of them.

"What the hell!?" Cried Rock Lee.

"Someone must still be alive in here." Shikamaru said. "They might be trying to blow up the infected."

"Fall back!" Called Jiraiya as the group turned around. Only to come face-to-face with a hoard of infected ninja just a few yards ahead of them.

"Crap! We're pinned." Said Ino.

Jiraiya thought quickly, turning his head and finding a clearing in an alleyway where the infected civilian had come from.

"Follow me!" He called as he leapt down the alleyway.

The team followed closely behind him, just as the hoard of infected ninja began approaching them. The team ran and ran, hoping to put some distance between them and the hoard of infected. Suddenly, at the end of the alleyway appeared an infected civilian. His skin was peeling, blood oozed from his pores, his clothes were damaged, and his eyes were pale and ghastly.

He muffled a pained groan. Before slowly approaching Jiraiya and the rest of the team in the alleyway.

"What's the hold up?" Asked Shikamaru as Jiraiya skidded to a stop.

"There's infected at the end of the alley. Fall back!" Jiraiya ordered.

Rock Lee and Naruto were at the end of the group. They turned around, finding the hoard of infected had began to swarm them from behind. Filling into the alleyway like a swarm of insects.

"Shit! They're behind us too!" Naruto called.

"We're trapped!" Cried Rock Lee.

Shikamaru looked around the area. He would not become the dinner of an infected, not today, and not ever. As his eyes scanned the alleyway, they landed on a pipe on the side of a building.

"Over there!" He called, pointing to the pipe.

"What about it?" Asked Ino.

"We can use it to get onto the roof of that building." Shikamaru replied.

"Good eye, Shikamaru." Jiraiya said. "Let's move!"

One-by-one the team climbed the pipe to the roof of the building. Ino was first, followed by Jiraiya, then Shikamaru, then Naruto, and finally Rock Lee. However, by the time Rock Lee made it onto the pipe, both hoards of infected neared the pipe. The team shouted at Rock Lee to hurry up, he tried to climb the pipe, nearly slipping and falling into the hoard. Luckily, he made it to the roof. Nearly missing a swipe from one of the infected at his leg.

"Are you alright?" Asked Ino. "You didn't get tagged?"

"N-no, no, I'm fine." Rock Lee replied as he sat on the ground. Taking deep breaths to recuperate from the ordeal.

Jiraiya looked down into the alleyway. Watching the infected climb over each other in a vain attempt to reach the team atop the roof. However, they weren't smart enough to climb the pipe to the roof.

"We're safe for now ... I think." Jiraiya told the group.

The team nodded as Naruto looked down at the streets below. Seeing a swarm of infected surrounding the building on what appeared to be all sides.

"So, Pervy Sage." Said Naruto. "How are we going to get out of here?"

...

Far away, it was nighttime. Most of the members of the Akatsuki on the journey to find Orochimaru were asleep. They found a hill high enough off of the ground to keep them safe from any infected. Pain was the only member awake, due to his unique properties he could stay awake for a complete twenty-four hours. He watched over the team in order to keep them safe. Not entierly because he cared about their lives; but rather because he needed them. A team was better than one man doing all of the fighting.

However, there was also another member of the Akatsuki who was awake. He had formally left the group and was walking through the woods. It was Itachi Uchiha. He was on his own, away from anyone else. Or so he thought. He suddenly flipped around, glaring at whoever dared to follow him.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't kill the messenger." Said Kisame as he held his hands up.

"Oh ... its you." Itachi replied as he turned to face his partner. "What do you want?"

"I want to know where the hell you think you're going."

Itachi sighed. "It is none of your concern."

"We're partners, it is my concern." Kisame replied as he pulled out Samehada. "And I don't particularly care for deserters."

"It doesn't matter. I'm not coming back." Itachi replied.

"Deserters don't typically come back." Kisame smirked.

"You don't-" Itachi began before suddenly coughing. A sight that surprised Kisame.

"You're sick with something." Kisame said in a concerned voice.

"Yes, I don't know where I caught it. But ... its getting worse."

"How much longer do you have left?"

"Not long. That's why I'm leaving, so that I can find Sasuke and ensure his safety."

"So, you really do care about your brother, don't you?"

"More than you can possibly imagine. I know that's hard to believe. Given what I did to our clan. But I do care about him. I want him safe during all of this."

Kisame then put Samehada away.

"I'll help you." He said.

"What? No, I couldn't ask that of you."

"I don't care. I respect your loyalty to your brother. I'll do whatever I can to get you to him."

Itachi nodded. "Thank you, Kisame." Itacha then paused. "If I am to die before ensuring Sasuke's safety. Will you ... make sure he's safe? For me?"

Kisame was surprised, but nodded.

"Yes, I can do that for you."

"Thank you." Nodded Itachi before turning away from Kisame. "Let's move. We haven't got long."

"Right behind you." Kisame replied as he followed after Itachi.

The two were now rogue ninja of yet another organization. All they had now was each other and their final mission together. Ensure Sasuke's safety. However, they were unaware of the fate belonging to Sasuke Uchiha. But they would soon enough. What would happen after that moment was anyone's guess.

Chapter Text

Jiraiya and his team were still stuck atop the rooftop. The hoard surrounding them had grown and their loud guttural groans had increased in volume. They crawled over each other like flies trying to get at their prey. However, none could reach the ninja atop the building. Jiraiya and his team were trying to scan the ground below them. Trying desperately to find an opening to escape, but never finding one as the hoard increased.

"Crap! We're dead! We're dead!" Cried Ino suddenly, catching everyone's attention. "We're all going to die here! We're going to get eaten and ripped apart by these monsters!"

"Would you stop the yapping?" Sighed Shikamaru. "We'll figure out a way out of this."

"No, no! How can we possibly get out of here, Shikamaru!? We're completely screwed and surrounded!"

"No, Ino. You have to have faith we'll get out of here. We've made it this far." Naruto said confidently.

Jiraiya remained silent, constantly thinking over a plan to get out of this situation.

"Well, Jiraiya!?" Ino cried. "You're the team captain here, how are we going to get out of this!?"

"Be quiet!" Jiraiya barked, shocking Ino into silence. "I'm thinking here."

A few more moments passed before Jiraiya snapped his fingers confidently.

"I've got an idea." He declared.

"Tell us, Jiraiya Sensei." Said Rock Lee.

"Okay, I'm going to start a huge blaze and burn the hoard to dust. Then we'll be able to escape." Jiraiya replied.

"Are you sure that'll work?" Questioned Shikamaru.

"Trust me, it'll work." Replied Jiraiya.

The group then sat back and watched Jiraiya take in a deep breath before doing a hand sign.

"Toad Oil Bullet!" He cried before spraying a huge wave of sticky mucus colored oil from his mouth onto the infected hoard in front of him on the dirt road.

The infected groaned as they were covered by the oil, they quickly realized they were sticking to each other. Some of their limbs snapped off due to being stuck in the oil. Acting quickly, Jiraiya did another hand sign before taking in a large breath.

"Fire Release Jutsu!" Jiraiya roared before a huge flame ignited from his mouth and spat onto the oil.

Instantly, the hoard ignited into a wall of fire. The infected screamed out in pain as they were completely enveloped in fire and smoke. Their rotting corpses slowly burning to ash as a large black smoke cloud puffed into the air. Within moments the hoard was completely gone.

"Everyone; go!" Roared Jiraiya as he led the team off of the roof and down to the ground below.

Instantly, loud guttural groaning and moaning sounds echoed around the village. The group couldn't wait, they had to scurry away to escape the infected civilians and ninja coming their way. The group raced down alleyways and streets to escape the nearing hoard. No matter how fast they ran it felt as if they were right behind them.

Finally, the group managed to escape the hoard and the village. Reaching the abandoned road that surrounded the village. Finally, the group could breath a huge sign of relief.

"That ... was way too close!" Said Ino.

"No kidding!" Barked Shikamaru.

"We need to report back to Tsunade." Jiraiya said. "She needs to know that the infection is spreading at an alarming rate."

"Right," nodded Naruto as the group headed out. Hurrying back to Tsunade at lightning fast speeds.

...

Far away, night had turned to morning for the members of the Akatsuki. Pain took a mental head count of the members with him. Quickly discovering that he was missing two of them.

"Where is Itachi and Kisame?" Questioned Deidara.

"Those ... traitors!" Barked Tobi.

"No ..." said Pain. "They must have left for another reason."

"What other reason would that be?" Questioned Deidara.

"Most likely surrounding Sasuke Uchiha." Replied Zetsu.

"Should we pursue them then?" Asked Deidara.

"No ... we must continue onwards. Finding Orochimaru's hideout is our top priority. No one member is above such a mission."

The group agreed and thus followed Pain deeper into the wilderness that surrounded them. Luckily, they had not encountered any infected. However, the group did not treat that as lucky, rather it was scary, as they did not know if an infected ninja would come out of nowhere and attack them. Thusly, Deidara kept watch. Searching around the area in a paranoid manner.

Deidara was not one to be scared easily, but the idea of becoming a mindless and rotting monster that pursued the flesh of other people was not exactly appealing to him. He seemed to be the only member of the group not afraid of the infection. Zetsu kept calm, Tobi treated it like a joke, and Pain was determined to control it more than anything.

"Gah!" Cried Deidara suddenly.

"What is it!?" Asked Pain as he flipped around to face him.

"I-I thought I heard something." He said.

"Zetsu, scan the area."

Zetsu nodded before vanishing into the ground.

"I think somebody is getting a little scared." Tobi said mockingly.

"Hey! Will you shut the hell up!?" Cried Deidara angrily.

"Both of you, silence." Pain said strongly.

The two instantly became quiet as the glare of Pain's rinnegan stared into their souls. He then turned around before something attacked his arm. It was an infected civilian, most likely from a nearby village. Tobi cried out in a mock terror, as Pain pushed the infected man off of his arm.

"Almighty Push!" Pain called as he stuck out a hand and blasted the infected man away.

"A-are you ... are you infected?" Questioned Deidara.

"No ... I feel no effects of this virus." Pain replied as he looked at the bite mark on his arm.

"But ... but how could-" Deidara stammered.

"Look!" Called Tobi as he pointed to a large hoard of infected civilians and ninja coming their way.

"Everyone! On guard, now!" Pain told them. "We're going to fight our way through them."

"F-fight them!? A-are you serious, sir?" Tobi stammered nervously.

"Yes! Now move in!" Pain told him as he led the charge towards the infected.

Nearby, Zetsu appeared in a tree. Watching the scene from a safe distance.

"Why are we here?" Asked Black Zetsu.

"Because I would rather not get involved with such a battle." White Zetsu replied.

"Coward." Remarked Black Zetsu.

"No, we need to revive 'her' remember?"

"Not like I forgot. But won't Pain be suspicious if we do not return to help him and the other two?"

"No, we can merely claim we got caught up in battling another hoard. Now shush! The battle is about to begin."

The two then sat back and watched the battle between Pain, Tobi, and Deidara and the infected hoard.

Pain instantly shot out two blades from his hands, using them like swords to swipe through the infected like a hot knife through butter. Tobi was less gun-ho about the battle. Using Kamui more defensively, as a way to avoid the bites and slashes of the infected while also ripping them apart with his raw strength and Kamui.

Deidara was also attacking more defensively. Using his explosive clay to lay waste to the hoard. But no matter how many bombs he set off, the hoard just kept coming. The trio did not know where they were coming from, but they knew it had to be from a big village. However, they could pity such a loss later, for now they were fighting for their lives.

Or ... at least it seemed like that to the untrained eye. For Zetsu could tell that both Pain and Tobi were in complete control of the situation. It was almost like it was second nature to them. This had begun to make Zetus suspicious of the both of them. How could they fight so well together if they did not know each other? It did not make senese.

"We should keep a close eye on them." Said Black Zetsu.

"Indeed." Nodded White Zetsu.

The two then got back to watching the fight. It appeared, slowly but surely, that the Akatsuki trio was winning. The hoard was dying down and slowing down in both numbers and ferocity. Suddenly, Pain unleashed a large Almighty Push, wiping out over a dozen infected in a single attack. He then scanned the area, and discovered that there were no more infected around the area.

"We did it!" Cried Tobi happily.

"Yes, we did." Replied Pain.

"Good, because I'm nearly all out of clay." Smirked Deidara.

Suddenly, he went stiff before spurting out blood from his mouth. He then staggered forwards, a large and bloody scratch mark across his back. Tobi and Pain looked behind him and noticed the upper half of an infected man clawing at whoever he could as he dragged himself across the ground. Pain quickly stabbed the infected through the head with one of his blades, before turning to Deidara. Who had begun to panic.

"N-no ... no!" He cried as he crumpled to his knees. "I-I don't want to g-go ... I-I ..." Deidara then fell eerily silent as his crying ceased too.

Suddenly, he flipped around. A snarling look on his dead and dried up husk of a face. Blood and mucus ran down from his pours as he growled at Pain and Tobi. Deidara had now become another victim of the infection. Pain and Tobi felt a small ounce of pity for their fallen comrade. But their pity quickly washed away as Pain stabbed Deidara through the head. Killing him instantly before pulling his blade back. Deidara then crumpled to the ground, blood pooling from underneath his head. Suddenly, Zetsu appeared from the ground asking the two what had happened.

"Deidara is dead." Replied Pain bluntly. "Where have you been?"

"I was busy dealing with a number of infected myself. Sorry I could not make it in time."

Pain squinted his eyes, not believing a word that Zetsu was saying. However, he didn't have the proof that he was indeed lying. All Pain had was a sneaky suspicion that Zetsu was lying. However, he had to push those feelings aside. The team still had a mission to complete.

"Come on," Pain said. "We need to head to Orochimaru's hideout."

The two nodded and followed after Pain as he led them deeper into the forest.

...

Back with the Konoha Survivors, it was now morning. Tsunade was worried, Jiraiya and his team had not yet returned to their camp. A sinking feeling was rising within her chest. Although, many tried to comfort her it did little to appease her worries. When she was about to declare them dead, Jiraiya and his team suddenly appeared. Tired, but alive.

Tsunade instantly gave Jiraiya a hug, surprising everyone who saw it. Jiraiya then tried to grope her boobs a perverted show of affection, before she swatted his hand away.

"Gah! Oh, give me a break, Tsunade." Jiraiya protested. "Me and my team just barely escaped with out lives."

"What happened?" Asked Kakashi as he approached the group.

"What happened is the village we investigated went completely to hell!" Cried Ino.

"Yeah," said Shikamaru. " The whole thing is gone."

Tsunade looked saddened. Another village was entirely gone from the world. But that only gave her more motivation to continue onwards towards the Hidden Sand Village. Hoping that Gaara and his village was still surviving during this entire apocalypse.

"Alright everyone," Tsunade said. "Let's move out. We have to continue onwards to Gaara and the Hidden Sand Village."

"Right," nodded Kakashi. "I'll get everyone ready."

In a matter of minutes, the entire camp was packed up and the Konoha Survivors were on the move again. This time heading for the Hidden Sand Village. Hoping and even praying that Gaara and his people had somehow survived this apocalyptic nightmare that they were living through.

...

Itachia and Kisame were continuing to trudge through the lands. Any fatigue they had, had been pushed aside. Instead, they continued onwards. Not stopping until they found Sasuke. Itachi was like a soulless machine, dead set on doing nothing but finding Sasuke. However, even he grew tired and weak. As he and Kisame were walking, Itachi collapsed. Coughing and wheezing harshly as blood coated his hands.

"Itachi, are you okay?" Kisame asked him.

"I-I'm fine." Itachi replied. "I won't be fine until we find Sasuke."

"There is a village up ahead, perhaps they could help us."

Itachi nodded. "Yes," he said as he rose to his feet once more and followed Kisame into the village.

However, once inside the village they discovered it was a hell hole. Numerous infected ninja and civilians roamed the streets praying on anyone that had the misfortune of getting in their way. Kisame cursed himself for bringing them into this mess. But they knew they couldn't run like cowards. No, instead they knew they had to fight their way through the village.

Kisame ripped and tore his way through the infected with Samehada. He took great pleasure in bisecting the infected in his way. Itachi was less thrilled about the experience, more concerned for the safety of Sasuke. Sasuke was a tough ninja, that Itachi knew for sure. But at the same time he was not invincible nor immortal. He could turn if bit or scratched. That was what worried Itachi the most. One wrong move and in a matter of seconds it would be over.

The thought of Sasuke becoming a dead husk of his former self enraged Itachi. So much so that he brutally ripped apart the infected before him with his kunai and his bare hands. Mangled and bloody remains of infected people were left in Itachi's wake as he plowed through the hoard. He finally reached and clearing. He then heard a low gutteral groan nearby.

Itachi angrily turned towards the origin of the sound. Expecting another wave of infected in his path to his brother. But what he discovered instead, shocked him to his core. He dropped his kunai to the ground. Too startled and shocked to move. Kisame noticed the shellshocked Itachi and quickly saved him from a nearby infected attempting to slash at his back.

"What's going ... oh." Kisame said his eyes trained on the infected figure Itachi was staring at.

"Sasuke." Itachi cried.

Chapter 6: Brother vs. Brother

Chapter Text

Itachia, Kisame, and the infected Sasuke stared at each other. Shocked into silence by their encounter with each other.

"N-no ..." said Itachi. "It ... it can't be."

"I'm ... I'm so sorry, Itachi." Kisame said.

"Brother." Moaned Sasuke as bloody drool dripped from his mouth.

Itachi stepped back a bit, too startled by the state of his brother to do anything. He then turned grim.

"I must kill him." Itachi said.

"What!?" Cried Kisame. "But I thought you were trying to save your brother?"

"I was, am actually. I know my brother would never want to live like ... this thing."

Suddenly, Sasuke smirked.

"Good luck," he groaned happily as Itachi's face went pale.

Sasuke was smarter than the rest of the hoard of infected. Much smarter. He appeared to take on the role of an alpha in a pack. Giving Itachi even more of a reason to kill Sasuke. Perhaps it could buy the world some time if the infected didn't have a leader directing them around. Maybe in the last moments of his time on Earth Itachi could help the world.

"Kisame," Itachi said. "Hold off the hoards, I'll finish off my brother."

"Already done." Smirked Kisame as he rushed back into the hoard of infected, slaughtering them with glee with his Samehada.

Meanwhile, Itachi and Sasuke stared each other down. The tension in the air being thick and palpable. Suddenly, Itachi threw up a hand sign, it was the hand sign for the Fireball Jutsu. He blasted the fiery attack at Sasuke, who managed to duck and speed away from the attack. Causing Itachi to demolish a house behind Sasuke in a fiery explosion.

Itachi cursed himself as Sasuke leapt at his brother with his sharp and dirty claws. However, Itachi managed to dodge the swipe before elbowing Sasuke in the jaw, nearly dislodging it in the process. Sasuke stumbled back, but Itachi wasn't finished. Instead, he riddled Sasuke's chest with punches. Causing blackened blood to spurt out from Sasuke's mouth.

Itachi then took out a kunai and swiped at Sasuke's head, hoping to finish this fight quickly. Instead, Sasuke's eyes widened. Revealing his Sharingan.

"The Sharingan?" Thought Itachi in shock, before Sasuke held his arm up to block Itachi's attack.

Due to the excess power Sasuke possessed, he broke Itachi's arm in two with the block. Itachi cried out in pain, stepping back as he held his broken arm limply. His kunai dropped to the ground with a clang as Itachi was amazed at the power Sasuke possessed.

"If I wasn't so weak this wouldn't be so bad." Itachi thought. "But Sasuke is too strong, it appears the infection has removed any semblance of stamina on him. His Chakra is skyrocketing with no stop in sight! I have to finish this now!"

Itachi closed his eyes, before opening them back up fiercely. Revealing his Mangekyō Sharingan. It hurt like hell for him to use. His eyes were bleeding and his vision was going dark, but he had to use this. It was his last ditch attempt to stop Sasuke and hopefully save the world from him. A man with his power level was sure to tear the world apart if he continued growing in both strength and in numbers.

"I'm sorry I had to do this, Sasuke. Amaterasu!"

Suddenly, black flames appeared on Sasuke's body. He cried out in pain. Stumbling about as his skin melted into a bloody and goopy paste on the ground. Parts of his skeleton was now showing. Nearly ripping him apart in the process. Itachi was a mess, nearly in tears from the pained and muffled cries his brother was spouting. He damned the world for making him have to torture his brother like this. Why couldn't he just die?

Finally, one of Sasuke's eyes exploded due to the heat. Before he crumpled over and collapsed to the ground, dead. Itachi closed his eyes, shutting off his Amaterasu and leaving the smoldering and bloody remains of Sasuke on the ground. Itachi then cried, tears flowing down his blood stained face. The pain from his broken arm and bleeding eyes paled in comparison to the pain he experienced witnessing his brother's brutal demise at his hand.

He blamed himself for this. He believed he could've done more for his brother to save him from such a fate. If he had saved him from Orochimaru, then maybe Sasuke wouldn't have turned into this ... this freak! This zombified husk of what his brother used to be. Suddenly, Itachi felt a sharp pain in his chest. He opened his teary eyes, staring right into the smoldering and skeletal face of Sasuke.

Itachi then looked down at his chest, seeing a bloody hole in his gut from where Sasuke had stabbed him. Blood dripped from the wound as Sasuke snarled. He then smirked wickedly, his nearly broken jaw clicking as he moved his mouth to smirk.

"Brother ... not too smart." He snarled in a gurgled voice.

"He ... he was pretending to be dead!?" Thought Itachi before Sasuke swiped his hand. Slashing Itachi's chest and nearly cutting his belly open.

Blood spewed from Itachi's mouth as he staggered back. A warm and wet liquid flowed from the open gash on Itachi's chest. Blood, his own blood. He then noticed the blood was darkening, realizing that he was already infected by the same virus that had infected Sasuke.

Itachi knew his time was limited, very limited. If the illness Itachi was infected with was wasn't going to kill him, then the virus Sasuke had infected him with was certainly going to. Itachi knew that if he became infected like his brother, then he would become too powerful for anyone to stop. He knew a threat like that was not worth living for. He had to end his life now.

As Sasuke leapt at Itachi. He took out a spare kunai he had on his person and stabbed himself in the head from under his chin. Sasuke yelped in anger as he bit down on his brother's neck. Piercing his teeth into his brother's throat and ripping it apart as Itachi slumped backwards, dead. Sasuke then ravaged Itachi's body, ripping and tearing it apart with brutal vigor. His dilapidated body was soaked in his brother's blood.

Sasuke then reached over and ripped out one of Itachi's eyes, before placing the cornea in the spot where his eye was blown out. Sasuke laughed verociously, his skin also began to heal, as if he had some sort of regenerative ability. Sasuke wasn't healed fully by his reneration, but regenerated enough to continue to function as an infected warrior. A warrior now imbued by the power of Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan.

Not too far away, Kisame gazed upon the scene with a hint of sadness. Although, he did not see Itachi as anything more than a close ally. He was still saddened by his demise. He nearly thought about ending it all, especially since he was now alone. He had abandoned the one organization that he had called home. For a stupid goal like finding Sasuke.

But Kisame didn't, instead he decided to fight his way through the hoard and live to fight another day. Perhaps he could grow strong enough to defeat Sasuke and find a way to end this infection. But that day was not today, he just hoped that it would be soon enough.

...

Far away from the site of Itachi's death, Pain, Tobi, and Zetsu trudged through the wilderness. Finally making it to a clearing where they were mere feet away from the entrance to Orochimaru's base.

"This is it," said Pain.

"Indeed." Said Tobi. "It was well worth it to reach this point."

Pain nodded, before extending his hand out to the metal door of the base.

"Almighty Push!" He boomed before a large air blast blew the door open. Allowing the trio to enter the base.

They walked through the deep and dark halls of the underground bunker. As they ventured deeper inside, blood stains coated the walls and the floor. Whatever had happened here was a massacre of epic proportions. If the trio wasn't so battle hardened, it might've even freaked them out a little. But the three were used to the death and destruction of the world around them. Allowing them to trudge onwards with little regard for their safety.

"It appears that no one is left inside." Said Tobi.

"Agreed," replied Pain. "But we must confirm there is no one left."

Tobi nodded silently as Pain led the group further into the compound. When they reached the end of a hallway, they heard distant clatter. Assuming it to be a lone infected, the trio slowly and silently entered the room. Inside, they found a lone figure huddled over a table. He was wearing a long and large black cloak, hiding his identity from the trio.

"Halt!" Called Pain.

The figure stopped in place, startled by the booming voice of Pain.

"Identify yourself." Said Zetsu calmly.

The figure then slowly turned around with their hands raised. Revealing themselves to be Kabuto Yakushi, the right-hand man of Orochimaru.

"Kabuto?" Questioned Pain.

"So, you must be members of the Akatsuki, correct?" Asked Kabuto as he pulled his hood down.

"Indeed, what remains of it anyhow." Said Pain.

"What are you doing here?" Kabuto questioned.

"We could ask you the same thing." Said Zetsu.

"I am here trying to solve all of this!" Barked Kabuto.

"How do you plan on doing that?" Asked Pain as he raised his eyebrow.

"Well, this virus was started by Lord Orochimaru's hand and it will end by my hand."

"Wait," said Tobi. "He started this virus!?"

"Indeed." Nodded Kabuto somberly. "It was meant to allow his body to act as a beacon to control others. Sort of like an extension of his Reanimation Jutsu. Once infected with Lord Orochimaru's cells the target would become a dead husk of their former self and obey his commands. However, the chemical compound was not complete and Sasuke Uchiha was exposed to its vapers after he killed Lord Orochimaru. Due to his cells not mixing well with the compound, it created this plague around us."

"So ... Sasuke is infected, right?" Asked Tobi, somewhat somberly.

"Unfortunately so." Replied Kabuto. "He then infected the entire bunker, before escaping and spreading this plague to the rest of the world."

"Why does it make people crazed?" Questioned Pain.

"As well as cause them to infect others." Added Zetsu.

"I ... don't have all of the answers." Kabuto replied. "But I do know that the unique chemical compound must've mutated itself within Sasuke's cells since it was not perfected and since Orochimaru is dead the infected have no one to listen to and so act on their most basic instincts. It causes them to seek out other non-infected individuals and infect them as well to add to this infected army. They're hungry for flesh and blood and seek out those with great Chakra most of all to in turn infect more people."

"So, this virus has a mind of its own?" Pain asked curiously.

"Something like that." Replied Kabuto. "Its primitive programming allows it to have greater control over those it has infected. As it travels straight through the subjects bloodstream and into their brains. Controlling their primal instincts to kill and feed like a puppet master."

"So, are the infected still ... alive in there?" Asked Zetsu.

"Possibly, although I haven't found definitive proof of this. But I do believe due to the fact the subjects Chakra Networks remain in tact that their souls are still residing inside of the infected husks. But are unable to do anything as the virus takes over their bodies. That was the original purpose of the chemical compound after all."

"So," said Pain. "What are you doing about it?"

"Working on a cure." Replied Kabuto.

"You can really make that?" Asked Zetsu.

"Indeed," nodded Kabuto. "At least, I think I can."

"You think?" Questioned Tobi.

"Well, since the virus was not completed as originally intended, I have to work with what I have been given. There were no contingency's put in place in case of something like this like there would have been had the virus been completed as originally intended."

"Well," said Pain. "In that case I purpose an ... alliance with you, Kabuto."

"What?" Questioned Kabuto. "Is this a joke?"

"No, it isn't." Replied Pain. "This virus affects the Akatsuki's own goals too. We need it gone as well. We have already lost two of our members to this plague."

Kabuto eyed Pain suspiciously, he did not believe Pain nor die he trust him. After all, he and the Akatsuki had been trying to kill Orochimaru for many years now. Why would they side with his loyal assistant even in dire times like this?

"Kabuto?" Asked Pain. "What do you think?"

"How can I possibly trust you? You have been trying to kill my master for many years now. Why side with me now? How do I know this isn't just another one of your schemes?"

Before Pain could answer, a loud clang was heard from behind the group. They rushed outside of the room and saw an infected civilian standing at the other end of the hallway. Moaning and groaning as their skin peeled off and blood cover mucus dripped from the holes in their flesh.

"Crap!" Called Kabuto. "How did they get in? I sealed the door shut!"

Zetsu and Tobi gave Pain a glare.

"What?" Said Kabuto. "Did you destroy the door?"

"I ... might have pushed on it a little bit, yes."

"Damn you!" Barked Kabuto. "The infected can smell our scents. That's why I sealed the bunker!"

Pain scoffed, he hadn't known that the infected could sniff out other non-infected civilians. But that was when he realized something. That is how that hoard had found them in the woods before. They had sniffed out that they were not infected.

"Kabuto, grab your things. We'll hold them off." Pain commanded.

"Us!? Really!?" Cried Tobi nervously.

"Zetsu, guard him." Pain added.

Zetsu nodded silently as Pain and Tobi rushed towards the infected to protect Kabuto. After killing the lone infected at the entrance, they discovered a small hoard of infected near the entrance to the bunker. Some were civilians, some were ninja. But they all wanted Akatsuki blood. The two began slaughtering the infected. Showing no mercy to any infected who dared come their way. By the time they finished, Kabuto and Zetsu were already at the entrance to the bunker.

"We're ready to leave," said Zetsu.

"Good," nodded Pain. "Let's go."

The group then fled the bunker, leaving what few infected remained behind them. They hurried across the lands before ending up in a dense forest. They finally stopped and hid up in the tree's to rest, hoping that none of the infected would find them.

"I can't believe I am saying this," huffed Kabuto. "But thank you."

Pain was surprised, but nodded silently. Kabuto then sat back against the tree. Still breathing heavily.

"We need to go, now." He said.

"Why?" Asked Tobi innocently.

"Those infected will likely call upon others. Besides, we have to find some extra arms."

"How do you mean?" Asked Pain. "You mean like more allies?"

"Yes," nodded Kabuto. "The most powerful warriors imprisoned by Lord Orochimaru. Suigetsu Hōzuki, Jūgo, and Karin. They are imprisoned at three different bases, so they will not be infected when we get there."

"What services can they provide us?" Questioned Pain curiously.

"Medical jutsu for one as well as powerful abilities that allow them to either remain immune to the infection or fight off the infection effectively." Replied Kabuto confidently.

Pain nodded. "Fine, we'll search for them. Under one condition."

"That being?" Asked Kabuto.

"You become our ally." Replied Pain.

"... Fine," nodded Kabuto. "You helped me, I'll help you."

"And you remain in Kamui's Dimension." Continued Pain.

"What is that?" Questioned Kabuto.

"It is a separate pocket universe I can teleport people or objects to." Tobi said proudly and happily.

"Why do I need to go there?" Kabuto asked.

"To keep you safe." Pain replied. "So far you are the only one who can fix this. We cannot risk you getting infected."

"Fair point," nodded Kabuto. "But let me out when we get to our first destination."

Pain nodded, before Tobi opened his eye wide and before anyone could react Kabuto was whirled away into Kamui's Dimension. Safe from harm.

"Now then," said Pain. "Where does Kabuto want us to go first?"

Tobi vanished for a split second before returning.

"He wants us to look for Suigetsu Hōzuki first. He's residing in a prison bunker exactly fifteen miles due east."

Pain nodded. "Then let's move," he ordered before the group hurried away in the direction given.

Pain was skeptical of Kabuto's commands to find these three individuals. But more allies didn't hurt. But what Pain cared about most was getting a cure to this infection so he could end it whenever he wanted. He hated the fact he was not in control of something, especially with it being so world shattering. He just hoped Kabuto could cook up a cure to this virus soon as Pain was already sick of him as it was.

...

Back underneath the Hidden Leaf Village, Danzo was living comfortably and securely. While his agents did his bidding above ground and kept tabs on everything proceeding, he was busy planning how he could use this infection for his own goals. Suddenly, Torune appeared before him and bowed.

"Lord Danzo," he said.

"What is it, Torune?" Asked Danzo.

"Sir, Root has found some survivors of the virus."

Danzo raised an eyebrow.

"How many?" He asked.

"Five, sir."

"Bring them in."

Torune nodded before signaling to a nearby agent to let the survivors in. A few moments later, five individuals were hauled in. They were handcuffed with rope around their wrists and had their arms behind their backs. They were Iruka Umino, Suzume, Hana Inuzuka, Tsume Inuzuka, and Chōza Akimichi.

"What's the meaning of this!?" Iruka.

"Nice find, Torune." Said Danzo proudly.

"Hey, Danzo!" Called Tsume. "What is going on!? Why were we brought here?"

"You were brought here because you are survivors of the Hidden Leaf Village disaster. You were separated from the others and thus unfortunately ended up in my care." Danzo told them.

"Others?" Questioned Chōza. "So there were more people who survived the outbreak?"

"Indeed." Nodded Danzo. "But they are long gone by now."

"Why imprison us then?" Asked Iruka.

"Because we can use you for testing." Danzo replied.

The group of survivors froze.

"Wh-what!?" Questioned a scared Hana.

"Well, we need a way to end this infection at the drop of a hat." Replied Danzo. "So, some ... sacrifices will have to be made in order for this goal of a cure to be accomplished."

"You monster!" Spat Tsume. "When my boy gets his hands on you he's going to rip your goddamn head off for doing this to me and for you lot killing my dog!"

"Oh, Mrs. Inuzuka." Said Danzo coldly. "Your boy is already dead."

Tsume froze.

"Wh-what?"

"Mhm," nodded Danzo. "He was already infected and killed. His body was brought in not too long ago. We'll use it to test a cure too."

Tsume wanted to argue with Danzo, to fight back against the obvious lies he was spewing. But with the cold and dry look on his face, she knew he wasn't lying. Tsume crumpled to her knees, bursting into tears at the prospect of the terrible fate that had befell her son. Her only son. Hana was no better, frozen in shock at the fact her brother was dead. It didn't seem real and her mind had trouble processing it. Even the other prisoners felt pity for Tsume and Hana. Despite not being as close to Akamaru as Tsume and Hana were.

"Now," said Danzo. "Take the prisoners to their cells. We'll experiment on them later."

The group protested, but it was no use as the Root agents hauled them away to their cells. The only ones who didn't fight back were Tsume and Hana, who were too distraught to even care about fighting back right now. When the prisoners were finally gone, silence filled Danzo's throne room.

"Lord Danzo," said Torune. "What if the experiments fail with these survivors? We haven't found anymore survivors in the village."

"Then we'll have to expand our reach, Torune." Replied Danzo. "Now be off with you and find us more survivors."

"Yes, Lord Danzo." Nodded Torune before he zipped away.

Danzo then sat back against his throne. Thinking over which survivor he wanted to test a cure on first. The options were certainly there, but the one he wanted more than any other was Tsunade. He hated her and her leadership. Believing her to be nothing but a drunk fool. She had lost the village and so deserved to suffer for it and Danzo was planning on how he could make that happen.

Naruto awoke in his makeshift sleeping bag. Rubbing his eyes as they laid upon the rising sun in the distance. He turned and found Sakura sitting up, resting on the edge of the cliff they had all made their temporary base.

"Sakura?" Asked Naruto. "Are you okay?"

Sakura looked back at her comrade and nodded.

"I just couldn't sleep." She said.

"Something on your mind?"

"A lot is on my mind."

"Like?"

"This infection!" Sakura blurted out. "I'm scared about Sasuke and the other innocent people out there. What if they got infected and become one of those monsters? What then?"

Naruto put a hand on his friend's shoulder.

"Then we'll deal with it then." He told her. "But now is not then, you know? We still have each other and we still have Gaara to go see today. We'll make it out of this alive, Sakura. Believe it!"

Sakura gave Naruto a faint smile. His words brought her some comfort and made her feel a little better.

"Thank you, Naruto." She said. "You're a true friend.

She then leaned over and gave Naruto a tight hug. Naruto was caught off guard, seeing as he was used to being struck in the head by her. But he relented and thus hugged her back.

"Woah," said a nearby feminine voice. "Getting a little close there, eh?"

The two broke the hug and turned to see Ino approaching them.

"It's nothing, Ino! Naruto was just making me feel better." Sakura retorted, causing Ino to laugh.

"I'm just busting your butt, Sakura." Ino chuckled, "relax."

Sakura pouted, turning away from Ino. While Naruto stood up and left the two be. He headed towards where the group's makeshift cooking area was. Hungry for some breakfast. That was when Hinata nervously approached Naruto.

"H-hey, Naruto." She blushed.

"Oh, hi Hinata. Did you sleep okay?"

"A-as good as I could have, considering." Replied Hinata.

"Fair enough," chuckled Naruto.

"H-hey, Naruto. There's ... there's something I'd like to tell you."

"Yes?" Questioned Naruto.

This was it, this was the moment Hinata was going to tell Naruto the feelings she had for him. She wanted to get it out of the way in case another opportunity did not present itself. However, as Hinata opened her mouth to speak, the booming voice of Tsunade cut through.

"Grab some grub and hurry up!" She called. "We're moving out soon."

"Oh, better hurry, Hinata. You can tell me later." Naruto smiled before hurrying away.

Hinata was left massively disappointed. She had used up all of her courage to tell Naruto how she really felt, nearly having a heart attack in the process. But she was again denied. Now she was fearing that there would be no other opportunity to tell him her true feelings for him.

...

After the Konoha Survivors finished their breakfast, they gathered their supplies and headed out on their mission to the Village Hidden in the Sand. Fortunately, they had not run into any infected. A blessing they cherished with all of their hearts. Allowing them safe travels to the Hidden Sand Village. When they made it into the barren desert that rested before the village they thanked every star in heaven that they had made it safely.

Some cheered and some just smiled, but the only one with a grim face was Tsunade. Hardened by her loss with Shizune and determined to reunite with the Fifth Kazekage of the Sand Village. She was like an obedient soldier, solely dedicated to her crew and the mission. But as she looked at the Hidden Sand Village in the distance, she realized something. Something that made her face go pale.

"Oh ... no," she said.

"What is it?" Asked Jiraiya as he stood next to Tsunade.

"Look!" She said, pointing towards the village.

As the Konoha Survivors gazed upon the Hidden Sand Village, they realized something grim. Standing at the wall around the village was a hoard of people. Signaling to the group that the Hidden Sand Village had already been overrun by the infection.
