With a glass of brandy in one hand and a folder of documents in the other, Sir Humphrey stood at the window of the PM’s office, gazing out at Downing Street.
Today was Hacker’s last day in the residence. All his personal belongings had already been boxed up and sent away.
Sir Humphrey was preparing to greet the leader of the victorious party as his new Prime Minister.
It had been a rainy autumn, and a few drops streaked the bulletproof glass. Humphrey watched the car pull up to the door of Number Ten and forced a smile.
