The Winchester Brothers vs the Supernatural book series

(Throwaway so nobody can see my possible mental breakdown) Okay so this is going to be a long and possibly insane sounding post so bear with me. I know how crazy I sound but I’m posting anyway.

When I was in high school (~2010-2014) I read a series of books called Supernatural by Carver Edlund. They’re not super well known, honestly not exactly literary masterpieces or anything, but they did have a small cult following that was very dedicated in fandom and fanfiction spaces and such. Why is this relevant you may ask? Because I recently came across the serial killers Sam and Dean Winchester. Sam and Dean Winchester? The names of the main characters in the Supernatural books.

Now this could all be a coincidence, except that ALL OF THEIR CONVICTIONS MATCH THE STORYLINES!!! The characters’ descriptions perfectly match photos of them, the locations the characters went are where the crimes were committed, and the crimes fit with the stories.

Some examples include:

-The October 2005 murders in St Louis. Dean Winchester was accused of murdering multiple people, but was supposedly found dead. Obviously his death was faked due to the fact that there were more crimes later on. The Supernatural book “Skin” details this exact scenario down to the last detail but the killer is actually a shapeshifter creature that is killed by Sam and Dean while the creature looks like Dean.

-The January 2007 bank heist in Milwaukee. Sam and Dean Winchester were trapped inside a bank while it was being robbed, but took over the situation after the SWAT team took down the original robber. The supernatural book “Nightshifter” details the scenario where the brothers are hunting a bank robbing shapeshifter and keep the bank hostage to avoid the shapeshifter from getting away.

There’s so many more examples but you get the picture. Now could this just be the results of a shitty writer who is basing his stories off of real events? You’d think. Except! THE BOOKS WERE PUBLISHED BEFORE THE EVENTS HAPPENED!!! “Skin” was published in May of 2005, 5 months before the St. Louis murders happened. Nightshifter? November 2006, 2 months before the Milwaukee bank heist. There are just way too many specifics to make this a coincidence.

But then it gets even weirder. The series gets really weird and meta during its 5th installment. There is a book called “The Monster at the End of this Book” where the author writes himself in as a character who is unknowingly a “prophet of the lord” and the brothers discover that this book series exists about themselves. The author’s self insert character disappears into thin air at the end of the series with a weird implication that he is God, and the actual author irl has apparently not been seen since sending in his final draft to the publisher. I am just utterly utterly confused.

But guess what? Story isn’t done yet. See I live in a very small town in Kansas, everyone recognizes each other. About 10 years ago some guys came to town and we all see them on occasion but nobody really knows where they live or anything about them. It’s mostly just the two guys probably in their 40’s, very tall, good looking, wear almost exclusively jeans and flannels. They occasionally have some others with them. Another man around the same age, a kid that looks like he’s in his 20’s, and a woman about the men’s’ age that seems to be dating the taller one.

But when I recently was learning about Sam and Dean Winchester, I about had a heart attack because these mystery men in my town look IDENTICAL to them. They seem like perfectly normal and nice guys and nobody has a bad thing to say about them other than that they’re a little mysterious. But they drive the car that both the serial killers and the book characters drove, which is a classic car that isn’t exactly common to see (1967 black Chevy impala). The other guy fits the description of the angel character “castiel”, though I have no matching characters for the kid and the woman. The kid also refers to all three of the men as his dad and I once overheard him say he was 6 before correcting himself to 26. Truly lost on that last part. I’m insane right? Please tell me someone else has read these books or had some kind of experience with these guys before I lose my damn mind.

TLDR: I’m pretty sure that the Supernatural by Carver Edlund book series was based on true events, the Winchester Brothers aren’t actually serial killers, but monster hunters, and they are happily living in my small town.

u/criminalbiminal Okay wait the Winchesters are one of my favorite true crime cases because of the fact that their motives and crimes were so inconsistent and their repeated fake out deaths were never explained. Let me go read these books asap and come back to this brb.

EDIT: I just read the first 8 books in the series and holy shit OP is onto something.

u/theatergirlmarie1 I didn’t even know the Winchester serial killers were a thing until recently but I WAS obsessed with the book series back in high school to the point where I made my theater put on a musical based on the books and um…I don’t want to give details but I can say you’re not crazy. At all.

u/grilledcheeseinmypocket This is extremely disrespectful to the victims to try to not only say these horrible murderers were fictional characters but also hunting monsters like they’re some kind of heros? This is the problem with true crime fans. Just because they’re hot and some of their crimes seem similar to some pulp novels doesn’t make this okay. Touch grass.

u/leftforbread No I always knew there was something more to the Winchester brothers because I met two guys who claimed to be FBI agents few years ago that looked exactly like them and they legitimately saved my life in a very weird situation that I don’t want to get into online but I’m gonna go read these books now. I definitely believe you’re onto something.

u/giantfloatingbabyhead I’m almost 99% sure we live in the same town because I know exactly who you’re talking about. I wasn’t aware of the book series but yeah these guys saved me and my friends from a ghost awhile back. We used to theorize about who they really were and all my friends thought I was crazy!! Then we hung out with the kid and I shit you not he has magical powers. We don’t talk to him anymore though after he lost control of the powers and hurt (and immediately healed) our friend. He was a nice kid but we just don’t need that shit in our lives. Anyway yeah that’s absolutely them. Nice enough guys, definitely call them up if you got something spooky happening, but I would stay away in general cause it seems like they’ve got a lot of weird stuff you don’t wanna be involved in going on in their lives.

—Reply from u/unofficialspnmerch don’t go down that road. When I found out they were real I went nuts too. It took a lot of therapy for me to realize how insane and disrespectfully I acted. Poor Sam had enough going on in his life I didn’t need to add to it. Not to mention getting added to those stories was not ideal, everyone hated me. I briefly dated the author and either he had a god complex or he actually was God but i don’t even want to know. Nobody will believe me anyway so why not just put that out there.

u/yogabylisabrae Reading this post just made something major come back from a repressed memory. I definitely need to make some phone calls because I’m pretty sure I was involved in this but until now my memory of it was just gone. It’s still pretty fuzzy but there’s something weird. Anyone that knows the series know if it included a woman named Lisa?

u/cliveaddison419 What in the hell kind of shit are those Winchester boys involved in? Yeah they’re real and they’re hunters. Normally wouldn’t say that so openly but others are agreeing with your story so fuck it. I never met them myself but I knew their dad back in the day, decent hunter but damn was he mean. Always heard they’re the best hunters out there and got into all kinds of crazy shit most of us haven’t even seen before but a book series based on their lives and some shit about god is a whole new level.

u/destiel4ever okay if all of it is true and it took place YEARS ago I have a very important question: have you seen anything that would imply that Dean and Cas are in a relationship?

—Reply from u/spnisreal ummmm I don’t know for sure. They’re definitely always VERY close to each other as opposed to anyone else around them. Pretty intense. I wouldn’t be shocked but I don’t know for sure. Will report back if I confirm anything.

Not on my watch.” Luckily Cas wasn’t human. Dean turned around and grabbed his keys and jacket while the tips of his ears turned red.
