Work Text:

It had taken him a few months, but Jack was finally learning how to use the iPad that Dean had gifted him to help him on cases. He'd had a bit of trouble working out how passwords worked and how to install apps, but he soon figured out how to go through the news on the device to look for new cases cropping up.

One afternoon, Jack opened the news app on the tablet and scrolled past the headlines and read them one by one. It was a lot of the usual old tabloid garbage:

How to make this Father's Day Special

That one caught Jack's eye. Father's Day. Was there really a whole day to celebrate fathers? Why? In his own experience, fathers tended not to be worth celebrating. That could also have just been because his biological father was Lucifer. Dean, Sam and Cas, on the other hand, now they were father figures. He clicked on the article.

The very first suggestion was to make a card for his father (or in his case, fathers) so he got to work. He took the credit card, and raided the nearest arts and crafts store.

The one he wrote for Cas was written in green ink, the angel's favourite colour. It read, Thank you for looking after my mother while she was pregnant and also for looking after me now. He hoped that was sufficient. He had no idea what one was supposed to write in a Father's Day card. He drew some extravagant angel wings on the front for decoration and put it to the side to start work on Sam's.

Sam's card was simpler by comparison but certainly not plain. It was written on white paper with black pen proclaiming Sam to be The best uncle ever and that Jack was so grateful for his support and mentoring.

Dean's, he was stuck on. What could he write to someone who didn't ever have anything to say to him? Then, inspiration struck. Who else did Dean raise?

Jack hid Sam's card under the bed and went to go get him.

"I don't understand, what do you need?" Sam was being dragged into Jack's room. The Nephilim held up a blank card.

"It's for Dean," he explained. "Father's Day. Do you want to help me make it?"

Jack swore he saw tears in the corners of Sam's eyes.

"Yeah. Yeah, I can help."

The two of them sat down on Jack's bed, using an old tome as a writing desk. After twenty minutes of discussion and a lot of craft supplies, it was finished. The card was absolutely covered in glitter. It was signed by both of them, and it said, Dear Dean, thank you for taking care of me when my real dad never did. You never had to, but you always did.

By the end of the process, Jack and Sam were both holding back tears of love and adoration.

"He'll love this," Sam promised.

"I hope so."

Sure enough, when Fathers Day came, and Jack presented all three of them with their cards, they loved them.

"Thanks, kid," Dean said, and kissed the top of his head.

"Yes. Lovely work," Cas agreed with his partner.

Sam just pulled him in for a long, tight hug.

Jack decided that he'd like to do Fathers Day every year from now on.
