Listen, Pearl was just being a good friend. She couldn't just let Eight be homeless! She took Marina in, three years ago, why wouldn't she do the same for Eight? And well, she was old enough to adopt now, and it would make creating documentation for her so much easier than it was with Marina, so it was just more efficient to adopt the girl!
And, well, if Eight kept having nightmares, and needed someone to teach her Inklish, and Pearl's house was quieter than Marina's city apartment, there was no reason she shouldn't stay with Pearl!
...Pearl wishes Marina would stop looking at her like that. Eight was just a friend.
Pearl adopted Eight. Somehow she never realised that she would actually come to see the teenager as hers, though.

Aubrey’s heart began to race. It was subtle at first, just a quiet dread pooling in the back of their throat. They knew Pearl and Marina meant well, they always had. But something about this felt off.
“We were thinking,” Pearl continued, leaning toward them slightly, “that maybe it’s time for us to bring someone else into the family. We… we’re ready to have another child.

Agent 3 hasn't been the same since they escaped the Deepsea Metro. Maybe it was the itching pain that made it almost impossible to move when they woke up, or maybe it was the physical reminder of their failure in the form of the scar from their sanitation. Whatever it was, it drove it into their skull again and again that they couldn't be the Agent they were when they had started.
Then an Octoling shows up.
A pink Octoling, with no identity and even less memory.
An Octoling that seems determined to help the Inkling heal.3 doesn't think saying no is an option here.

Not long after Commander Tartar's attempt to destroy Inkopolis and the world is foiled, Agent 3 wakes up from his coma with noticeable disfigurations from having been hijacked by Tartar. Concerned about the effects Tartar's hijacking could have had on Agent 3's noggin, Cap'n Cuttlefish assigns a partner to Agent 3: the Octoling girl who had freed him from Tartar's control and defeated the creature, Agent 8. Although reluctant to have Agent 8 working alongside him, a series of misadventures leads the two agents to begin developing… complicated… feelings for each other.
However, trouble is brewing for the New Squidbeak Splatoon and Inkopolis. Although Tartar and his NILS Statue were destroyed, the city soon finds itself falling prey to a string of squidnappings, only for the victims to turn up as Sanitized zombies bent on destroying the world around them.
But, with Tartar gone, who could be Sanitizing Inklings and Octolings alike? Will Agent 3 and Agent 8 ride off into the sunset together? Will I find my wallet? Let's find out together...

After the events of Splatoon 2 Octo expansion, Agent 3 has been suffering multiple Migraines, a switch of attitude and mood at any moment and stinging throughout their entire body which left them mostly sick due to the sanitization Injections and Mind control those elites forced them through. They're left with a stubborn Agent 8 who won't leave them alone no matter what.
8 wants to help so dearly but 3 still feels guilt.
