Summary
Nicholas D. Wolfwood manages to piss off Gunsmoke's most violent cryptid: Millions Knives. Despite his rage, Knives agrees to spare Wolfwood, but only if he successfully tracks down Knives' slippery, nomadic brother - another elusive cryptid simply referred to as "The Stampede".
It takes years, but thanks to the aid of Zazie the Beast, Wolfwood tracks "The Stampede" to a small mountain town called TriPeak.
Despite Wolfwood's desperation to catch the monster, his fondness for the town proves to be a slight distraction. The locals are nice, the cafe sells the best coffee he's ever had, and TriPeak is inherently charming, despite the perpetually grey weather.
And on top of all that, there's one newer TriPeak transplant who Wolfwood finds particularly fascinating.

“Let me just take out this order, and I’ll take a break, okay?” Vash walks out of the kitchen through the saloon style doors without looking before Rosa can object or shake her head at him. The next thing he knows, Vash has walked face first into a living breathing wall and spills the entire cup of steaming hot coffee all over a bright white shirt.
“What the FUCK, dude?”
Vash stares bug eyed at the dark brown stain in front of him. He can’t bring himself to look the man in the eyes as he says, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Let me go find you some- AH!” While trying to apologize, Vash trips over his feet and falls backwards into an actual wall. The force of the collision results in whatever was left in the cup and Vash himself falling onto the floor. “Oh my god oh my god oh my- okay you just- hang on there, and I’ll grab some paper towels and-”
“It’s fine, man,” the mysterious wall says with a heavy sigh, “I fix cars for a living. Can’t expect to be clean all the time.”

Meryl Stryfe is a junior at November University working hard at her job at the university journal, eager to please alongside her rookie partner and photographer, Milly Thompson. “Wolfwood, sorry that I’m waking you up.” Not actually that sorry, he lets a gentle rapt on the rusted door. “I couldn't sleep,” he adds lamely.
There’s a long quiet that follows. The sounds of settling metal echo through the hull.
“Wolfwood?” Vash knocks again, a little more insistent. At one moment the ship is faintly buzzing with distant, disturbed wams. The next it falls into a dead silence.
The hair on the back of Vash’s neck stands up.
“Um… I’m going to open the door.”
