Summary
He's been in Radiator Springs for just over six months when Lightning chances a glance at the calendar that Doc hangs up on their fridge.
The thing is color coded too- because knowing Doc: of course it is.
Blue means a race day, green means training down at the Butte, and the yellow days are the rest days that Doc insisted he take in order to not burn himself out from it all.
He freezes mid chew when he spots a lone space in June free of any color.
This upcoming Sunday.
More specifically: Father's Day.
Lightning has one of those, one rotting away from booze in Nowhere, Alabama. One he would prefer to forget most days. And now he has a Doc. He's not exactly sure what he's supposed to do with that knowledge.
(Or the one where Lightning struggles with the fact its fathers day and Doc is absolutely born to be Dad-shaped. Shenanigans occur as our resident racer figures out how to show how much he appreciates his Mentor.)

Doc just couldn't shake this cough. Three months of nearly hacking a lung up and he made the executive decision to break down and see his doctor. Lightning's worried glances only seemed to grow as the days dragged on without a resolution.
He knew eventually it would catch up to him.
You didn't make it to sixty five years old without some sort of health problems causing a fender bender in life.
He should be grateful he hadn't had any issues earlier in his youth, what with the amount of packs he used to smoke from ages 15 to... well now.
Seeing the CT scan results, he kind of wishes he had listened to Smokey when he grumbled at him, "Those things will be the death of you kid."
(Or Doc faces his mortality, has some 'fun' procedures, worries his adopted son, and tries like hell to finally kick the smoking habit)

It all started with a zipper.
Growing up as poor as he did, whatever meager food he managed to squirrel away was never enough. His old man would sooner spend whatever money he made on booze instead of groceries for his own son. The fast metabolism he was born with didn't help maintain whatever weight he had managed to gain either.
So when Lightning slipped on one of his only pairs of jeans to head to Flo's with Doc, he realized something.
The zipper was stuck.
Well. Fuck.
(Lightning enjoys eating Flo's delicious food a little too much in Radiator Springs. He handles it okay- as in not handling it well at all. Thank God for Doc.)

((So I saw a pic about Storm and then I discover fanfics about Storm and Lightning and totally ship them. Sadly there isn't many fanfics of this two so I'm making one myself. This fanfic take place at the beginning of Cars 3 since I think the movie was a bit rushed. Also I will be changing the age of some characters.))

Twenty year old Lightning McQueen wants to be a Piston Cup star. It's been his dream since he was a young kid to win the Fireball 500 and the Piston Cup Championship. He spent his child and teenage years racing go karts and late model stock cars, and now he's finally got his chance.
Hudson Cooper, known for the most part as Doc, is an ex Piston Cup crew chief, having left only a couple years prior after an accident that ended the life of his driver. He swore he would never be in the racing scene again, but sometimes grudges don't last. He's forced to meet rookie Lightning McQueen, and is paired with him as his new crew chief. Lightning doesn't listen, and Doc thinks he can find a way around that. He's quick to learn of Lightning's familial issues, and fatherly dynamics ensue.
Tragedy cannot stay away from Doc Hudson for long, though.
