Dean is happy in heaven because you are happy in heaven. Heaven is a happy place. He is happy there until he isn't, until he starts having nightmares, until he starts doubting, doubting everything but most of all doubting what happened after the Empty took Castiel. How did he just accept that? How did he simply let Castiel go like that and then... stopped caring? That makes no fucking sense at all! And Dean isn't the only one that starts to question things. Castiel finds himself questioning too. What if someone actually did this to them? What if someone prevented Dean from properly reacting to his confession, to his death, preventing him from caring, prevented them from talking again?

Dean's death meant he could finally be at peace, but mostly it meant he could escape the sorrow and pain he was leaving in. Although, Heaven wasn't where he expected to end up and even though the pain is not entirely gone, Dean is glad to see his family and friends again. But when he finds out that Castiel is alive and in Heaven, somewhere out there where he could find him, Dean battles with himself and everything that would stand in his way to get back his angel.
And once he gets to see Cas again, he is willing to fight eternity itself to keep him close.

night shift is a series of one-shots set in an au where dean never gets cured after being turned into a vampire. Instead of going back to his old life, he’s stuck living in the dark, trying to find some kind of new normal. each chapter is a snapshot of his life, set at varying points between season 6 and season 15, as he navigates the aftermath of his transformation, the toll it takes on his relationships with those he loves, and the hunger he can’t shake.
UPDATE (13/11/25): this series started as a standalone, but i’m reworking it into the first part of a four-part story. the revisions are meant to smooth out the character arcs so everything connects more naturally going forward. the tone is shifting just a little — dean’s feelings for cas are beginning to surface throughout the course of this fic, but cas doesn’t believe dean’s in love with him — not yet. therefore, the running theme i want to hold onto throughout this series is that quiet tension between hope and doubt — that longing for something real, even when neither of them can quite name it yet. finished chapters will have the date of completion, so you know you're reading the final version!
