The crashing of waves begins to fill his ears, and Brae lets himself roll with the current. A wave picks him up, and he laughs as it tumbles him towards the shore. It hurtles past him, and another wave picks him up right where the former one had left him. This one is enough to get him all the way there, and it throws him to the ground with an unforgiving smack. He winches as shells crunch underneath him, and he breathes another laugh. Small waves continue to fold over him, and he opts to make his way further up the shore to avoid them pulling him back in. He rolls jankily, only crushing his dorsal fin a little bit as he escapes the ocean's pull and he, eventually, flops onto dry sand with a final cackle.

His own incompetence aside, Steve could begrudgingly admit that ballet was good exercise. Barely fifteen minutes would pass before he was drenched in sweat, thanking any god that he was allowed his gallon-jug of water in class. Thirty minutes could go by until he physically needed to run to the bathroom and splash his face with water or he'd feel like death. And by the time the full forty-five minutes was up, Steve would be wondering how the hell anybody could do this for longer than that. He sent silent prayers to the classmates who stayed in the studio, transferring into other rooms for their next lessons, while Steve would stumble like an escaped convict toward the safe house of his air-conditioned car.

Maybe it was when he deleted social media. Usually when Steven disappeared, James and Cib followed after. They didn’t fawn over him, no one had the time, but they met him where he was. At first it was small reminders to sleep more and spend less time in the office. Then they got fired. Those small reminders became frequent attempts to coax Steve out of his bedroom and eventually out the house. All three of them had it rough, but Steve was the only one who withdrew instead of seeking comfort. Steve was the only one who still refused to be vulnerable, even when they were all experiencing the same pain. Maybe it was his fault for not communicating. Maybe they were sick of guessing what was wrong. Sick of wasting so much effort on someone who refused to reciprocate. In the end, it was always Steve’s fault. Always joking, never honest, too much work even after all these years.
