If his cheeks weren’t already burning, he might blush. “Really.”
“Your attitude is easier to handle when you’re all clingy,” Kaveh admits.
"Well, I guess you get to see it one last time,” Alhaitham says.
Kaveh’s expression sobers. “…I guess so.”

Once more his hand winds around Kaveh’s waist, and he pulls him away from the throng of people in the crowd.
He can distantly hear the vendor’s teenage daughter observing them, and with no care to modulate the volume of her voice, goes, “you didn’t tell me the scribe was the architect’s sugar daddy!”
Kaveh promptly chokes on air, but Alhaitham offers another firm tug, and they vanish off into a side-street.
“Darling,” he says, eyes boring into his own, noses scant inches from each other.
“I needed to get you out of there before you caused a scene.”
A raise of two eyebrows—Kaveh liked to believe he only raised one, to look all suave, but in reality he had always raised two and looked all the more foolish for it—and a tilted glare.
“And your idea of getting me to not make a scene—I wasn’t making a scene, for your information—was to call me darling?”
“Yes. It worked, didn’t it?”

Behind the doors of the nearest broom closet, Alhaitham pins Kaveh against the hard edge of an overfull shelf and shamelessly scents him, rubbing his cheek against the smooth skin of Kaveh’s neck. There’s been a small explosion in Ghandarva Ville, it’s some sage’s 50th birthday, Kshahrewar scholars are protesting outside the Akademiya for more money, and Alhaitham doesn’t give a shit. Kaveh is in heat. Alhaitham's responsible for him, and that duty supersedes everything else. The Matra can deal with the explosion, the Grand Sages can’t fire him anyway, and the other scholars can go to hell. Alhaitham has better things to do with his time.
