“I don’t get it,” Coriolanus admitted lamely, hoping he wouldn’t be judged by his lack of understanding. He knew he didn’t have to worry too much with Sejanus, but he was sure if he was him right now he’d be rolling his eyes at how ignorant he was being.
“They’re sending us into the arena Coryo, as tributes,” and for a moment Coriolanus’ world seemed to stop.

They weren't sure who'd pushed the first domino, but somehow the mentors found themselves plotting high treason with less than 24 hours to set a plan in motion. And they were going to do it correctly. At all costs.
In other words: realizing that throwing 24 children in an arena to kill each other or be shot is a bad thing to do does not erase the fact that they're Capitol first and foremost, and as such their methods are... Utilitarian. But it's okay because they fix it. Sort of.
