    As a reward for saving His Majesty's life from the hands of Bori Khan, the Emperor offers Hua Mulan a place amongst the country's most decorated warriors: an officer's position in the highly-prestigious Emperor's Guard.

    Mulan initially rejects it with the reason that she needs to return home to see her family, but as soon as she returns home, her village very quickly receives the arrival of Commander Tung and his troops sent by the Emperor.

    Gifted with a new sword and asked to reconsider the Emperor's offer, Mulan finally made her decision.

    The cultural juggernaut of Disney has come to dominate today’s media landscape, making it an ideal medium for examining shifting perceptions of race and ethnicity. With reference to Aladdin (1992), Mulan (1998), The Princess and the Frog (2009), I examine how each of these respective ‘firsts’ reflect their sociopolitical contexts and shape audience perceptions of race. I go on to contrast this with the ‘new’ era of Disney, exemplified by Mulan (2020) – focusing on how departures from the original illustrate changing societal attitudes around race.

    Through analysing four films spanning three decades, I argue that on-screen depictions of race and ethnicity ultimately mirror the attitudes of their creators and intended audiences.
