It's a tradition to burn down a Woodland Mansion at every start of a season. Only this time it's not only inhabited by mindless mobs. There is actually an uncorrupted Player Allay there.
Scar and Cub don't really know how to feel about Grian when they help to rescue him. If they'd come just a few weeks later Grian would have become a Vex. And the reminder of what they lost confronts them with feelings they would have liked to forget.
Grian, on the other hand, really just wants to enjoy his newfound freedom and do what Allays are supposed to do - gathering things and causing mischief. Which is hard to do when you’ve been dropped into a foreign world and have no clue where your former crew has ended up. Not to mention the two very intriguing Vex, who give off very mixed signals. Not that Grian is any better at communication.

One moment Grian was walking over the street, searching for some place that he could get food from. The next the was laying on a bed in a medical room on a spaceship surrounded by weird looking people.
One of the people there offers him a job in exchange for a roof above his head, food and all the pleasure that he could ever want.
At first Grian isn't sure about the whole situation, but the hermits grow on him pretty quickly.

Now, Scar's never seen a living harpy, but he's not stupid. Everyone and their mothers know they're blood-thirsty killers, mindless animals at best, demons sent from hell itself at worst. Xelqua had been born an avian, bearing six wings instead of the common two or four. The extra appendages corresponded to his heightened magic affinity, he'd come to theorize.
The two new pairs of wings certainly did.
He was able to do things now, things not any Avian should have been able to do. He could corrupt electrical systems with a thought, could phase through objects like a Vex. His wounds seemed to heal over in a matter of hours. It made escaping police custody a rather simple task.
Once at a safe distance, Xelqua tucked his wings away with his regular magic. The four extras went away with them; as did his peculiar new powers.
He staggered the streets until he found where the earth tipped downwards, falling to the musky streets of the Perimeter. Dazed, alone, free.
The only evidence now left of the ceremony were his missing eyes.

When the teleportation rune landed them in an unknown territory, Sam was prepared to improvise. He’d come too far, after all, to let Eret slip from his grasp before he got the answers for which he’d been so desperately searching.
