It starts when Desire drags his ass out to a fetish party in Brixton when he would rather have been tucked safely away in his studio. It starts with a few hits of MDMA, an unwise promise, and a conversation over heard in the smoking section. It starts with a man named Robert who smiles like the sun, takes takes him in hand and takes him a part, one piece at a time.
Look, Dream knows he's a mess, in almost every way, but he just came out to Torture Garden to ostensibly have a good time. He didn't intend to have every aspect of his existence turned upside down, inside out, and unraveled. Yet here he fucking is.

You win if you can successfully go on—" she looks around the room and smiles when her eyes land on a sign on the back wall of the bar "—ten dates with the man. You can define dates however you wish." Morpheus's eyes follow where she had been looking and spot the large 10 on the satirical sign of "house rules".
"Very well. And if I win, will you cease meddling in my life as you seem so determined to do?"
She frowns. "I'm just worried about you, I'm not trying to 'meddle.'"
"If I win," he enunciation, staring back at her. "Will you let me live my life, such as it is, as I choose?"
"Fine," she relents, face fallen. "If you win, I'll leave it be. I'll still worry, though!" she adds, pointing a finger at him. "Don't think I won't. But…I'll keep quiet about it."

Summary
Dream tried to outrun his grief by drowning it, and it didn't work. Once a parent, once a successful stageplay writer and currently neither, he is putting the pieces back together. Now, he has not had a drink in over a year. Not for lack of popping up in hotel bars where everyone else is fleeting while Dream actually lives in London. He can probably rate every Shirley Temple in every hotel bar at this point.
And then he meets Hob Gadling, the barkeep at one such hotel bar, and flirts to pass the time: Hob could not possibly want him. Except then Hob does want him, and Dream finds himself surrendering some of the tightly held control to Hob, and it is wonderful...

Dream is the highest ranking cleric in the city. His gifts are sought after by all and the cost of his services reflect it. He has treated and healed everything from Kings to Demi-Gods. But he is tired of his position. Those he cares for and treats are grateful, yes, but his services are almost expected. And the one time he fails because the bishop was too far gone, even for Dream's skills, he was berated for his failure. Whispers echoed through the kingdom that the High Cleric Dream was losing his touch, that the gods that favored him so are losing interest.
Dream begins to think that maybe they are right. Then he meets Hob - a necromancer that works out in the battlefields, mostly. Someone who he would normally never cross paths with until he does.

It is easier for him to kill than to care, he believes, and his three pairs of teeth only goes to prove that he is all bite. The Corinthian fights and teases the way he was created to do: stabbing his Lord Morpheus, Dream of the Endless, his Master, his King, through the hand with the cherished blade the god had given him eons ago. The nightmare relishes in his creator’s shock for a second, the pretty pale blue eyes of Dream’s more-human form wide and wet and red-rimmed.
“Look at me”, the Corinthian thinks, “finally look at me.”

He is depressed and feels like he's full of broken pieces, and his sister coaxes him into interacting with Hob Gadling, a swimmer aspiring to swim the English Channel. It won't fix everything. But it could be the start of something new.
Through a series of travails, including attempts to take his own life, he discovers the truth. Finding his missing Selkie skin won't fix everything, but it will help...

Summary
Dream's time spent caged by Roderick Burgess has changed him, and he is tired. The Dreaming is loud, an ocean that drowns him. His responsibilities are another cage, and Dream comes to the realisation that he does not want to be who he is anymore. But he is Endless, and the Endless cannot change.
It is not enough to banish the exhaustion that haunts Dream's steps, but he finds comfort in Hob's company as the two of them navigate a tentative friendship. It is a break, when the Dreaming gets too loud.
It is not enough. Dream finds himself unable to find the words to explain what is happening inside his own head, though many are willing to listen. Eventually, his own desire to change and be something different manifests itself as a door inside the Dreaming that will take him to the Sunless Lands.
It is not the change he wanted. But he is tired, and this door is the only way to escape his function. Thankfully, Death of the Endless has another solution to offer her brother

Dream E. tipped well—absurdly well, sometimes, which was probably because Hob actually obeyed all the notes about things like Do not buy apples without sending a picture of them, I will tell you which I want and No other brand is an acceptable substitute on items like Sainsbury's own-brand custard creams. He would order half a dozen of the exact same frozen meal every week for months, then switch to a different one and be just as obsessed with it. There was only one kind of honey he would accept in one size jar. Hob knew probably not only how he took his tea but how many cups of it he drank every day; he was forever forgetting to order teabags and then texting Hob at the last minute to add a box.
Hob had taken to adding "Do you need tea?" to the standard "This is Robert G. and I'm shopping your grocery order" text.
(Robert G. who brings the groceries is one of the most-texted numbers in Dream's phone. This will surely never cause any problems.)
