Written in a variety of tenses and with perspectives of various points in the timeline as seemed right per subject/speaker. This mess will be pretty much impossible to follow without first skimming 13 Wandering Paths, a bio-summary written from Galbatorix's perspective on all of these people.

Will this boy be their salvation? or shall he be the key to their destruction?

Unfortunately for Durza, the 'lovely' residents of Uru Baen seem to have missed the 'use of perfumes and deodorants' when they decided to forgo daily showering.
