The thick, darkening grey smoke of the signal fire had extinguished during the night, leaving from their call for help only perishing embers. There was no sign of any response on the horizon, no neighboring pyres set ablaze to dispatch reinforcements; only the Kremnoan forces marching their way, an indomitable cloud of red and gold swallowing the fields and grinding them into tasteless dust—into soon-to-be conquered land.
The army would be at their door tomorrow. No one would come and save Aedes Elysiae.

“Phainon… we can't save everyone.”
“And once everyone is lost… when that time comes, will you finally admit to me that I actually couldn't save anyone at all?” Phainon asks with a bitter smile. “At the end of our journey… will you still be there to lie to me, to tell me I should keep my head up because I did all that I could, even though my failures have cost us the lives of our companions?”
Mydei closes his eyes as he takes a deep breath. Getting stabbed repeatedly is definitely much less painful than having to hear the love of his life blaming himself over everything that has gone wrong and will go wrong.
“Phainon, please… we're all in this together.”
“I know. But I don't want to be ‘the only one who witnesses the miracle’. I don't want to be the sole survivor for a second time—I don't think I can take it. I'll probably lose myself.”
Upon hearing Phainon's last statement, a wave of fear washes over Mydeimos, and his heart sinks.
