And it makes getting Thomas out of the Last City all the more important.
Upon his entry to the Safe Haven, Thomas just might have to face something harder for him than running the Maze, the Scorch, or even entering WCKD. He can't share his past, can't share those feelings he's had burning through him for as long as he can remember. They're too painful. But he can't quite ignore them either.
Begins in the movie perspective, as Teresa's announcement echoes through the Last City.

“Should we tell him?” Thomas heard Minho's voice. He was sleeping only a couple of people away from Thomas.
“I don’t think so. We still don’t know if he’s even going to make it,” He heard Brenda protest.
“But Newt hearing his voice might help,” Jorge told them.
“Yeah, and he’s sulking around because of him,” Fry added. “We can’t hide it from him.”
“We can’t throw him into shock, his wound could open back up,” Brenda protested once more.
He couldn’t hear much after that they lowered their tone but he could have sworn he heard Newt’s name brought up again. Thomas leaned closer to them in his hammock before he made the mistake of forgetting about weight distribution. He fell out of his hammock with a loud thud that woke many of the others up.

He had this terrible asthma and this limp, and did everything he could not to show it. And it worked. But for Minho, it was different; he seemed to be the only one to notice how the blonde would constantly have to stop during a race to take a few puffs of his inhaler, how he would frequently disappear god knows where in the middle of gym class, or how he skipped sports lessons more and more often.

It had seemed that all feelings of hope and motivation had been replaced with ones of doubt and worry. Perhaps Newt couldn't quite live with that - a daunting situation where he aimed for an escape yet didn't want to damage anyone, though it was apparent that he'd only end up being able to pick one.
But after his choice goes a little wrong, his friends are still there to pick him back up and aid his recovery, despite there still being a lack of hope. This problem, however, ends up getting solved later; the solution being in the form of a new Greenie: Thomas.
