Summary
Valjean meant to toss the rose he carried into the rushing waters below but he could not—his fingers would not part with it, no matter how many times he moved to let it go. There was a metaphor in that, he thought, but he was not yet ready to examine it closely.
The sensation of Javert’s presence wrapped around Valjean like the wind as he walked—it did not cradle nor comfort but chilled him through and through, like the cold metal of a shackle clasped around his ankle, trailing a heavy chain. He had long imagined the man’s gaze on him even when it was not, but perhaps now it would follow him forever, no longer bound by the restrictions of flesh and blood.

“As I’ve said, Javert, we have suspected as much for years: I certainly always thought it strange, a man of your age having no wife and, to tell you the truth, you’ve been a much needed asset when dealing with prostitutes. Certainly in the beginning I may have brushed it off as your overzealous dedication to the law, but then you started spending so much of your time with that gentleman; all but confirming the matter.”
To say Javert had no idea what Gisquet was insinuating would be a lie, the man had spent much of his life solving crimes he was able to put two and two together: it was simply that his mind refused to arrange the pieces in order, perhaps as one last defence against the accusation. He was reeling in the strangest mix of bewilderment, relief and dread when Gisquet finally put him out of his misery: and swiftly into his embarrassment.

“For God’s sake,” muttered Valjean. “You can’t tolerate a little teasing? You are more than twice Marius’ age, yet you are behaving like a boy. I have half a mind to put you over my knee.”
The words had escaped Valjean’s mouth before he could stop himself. He automatically took a step back, half expecting Javert to yell at him.
However, Javert’s reaction was unexpected. His eyes grew wide, and his lips parted, as if to retort, but nothing came out of his mouth. He stood frozen in place, staring up at Valjean.
