This way it had already been two years since our return; Little had once tried to get back his sea legs, and went to Brazil and back with the post, returning quite unscathed way ahead of the letters he send from Rio; Hodgson and Irving were both invalided out and I never got that field promotion confirmed and with Captain Crozier finally retired I saw no reason to continue being a steward.

I could have tried my luck with Captain Fitzjames, but I cannot curl his hair to the perfection he wants. I practised, on Little, it went badly and we never bothered again.

What I wanted to say was that these days we did not need to constantly see each other to be calm.

I always knew that anything popular is often copied by those who seek the easy gain; thankfully, my own writing was obviously protected by the fact that Holmes as the subject of it could and would sue anyone for defamation, and thus at first my competitors chose to invent new detectives that were unique enough to not be too obviously a copy. They weren’t too much of a bother: in fact I found the number of imitations a credit to my skill as a writer, no matter what Holmes thought of it.

James’s expression was openly pitying, and Henry flinched; he didn’t need his pity, not when it was James whose repeated failure had put them into this position. “He says that it defeats the purpose of the arrangement, if the lieutenants are already too close with one another. That we’re… supposed to be fostering new bonds, not hiding behind old ones.” James appeared genuinely uncomfortable to parrot the words, and Henry’s anger cooled momentarily as he was reminded that it wasn’t just him affected by this arrangement, as Sir John Barrow called it.

“That’s funny,” Henry drawled, sardonically, as he turned away from James and heavily sat himself down in a nearby chair. “That’s funny, considering Hodgson is also a pal of yours, and yet the Admiralty has no issue with forcing you to marry him.”
