Summary
They meet at a new faculty orientation, two weeks before term starts.
It's at the meet-and-greet for this committee that Jon notices him for the first time. He'd seen him throughout the day, of course, what with only five or so other new faculty at the orientation, but they'd not been partnered up in any of the icebreakers or placed into the same small discussion group during lunch.

It's Jon's first year as a professor at Magnus University, where he thinks his fellow committee member is out to get him. Rather, Martin thinks they got off on an awkward foot but reconcile quickly and end up flirting at every meeting.

For a moment, Martin allows himself to imagine what it would be like—to stay in this house, to build a life here with Jon, to cook and go on walks, get to know the people in the village and turn this temporary refuge into a home.
What would it be like, to belong here, together?
The image makes his chest hurt with a fierce wanting—all the more painful because it's been so long since he allowed himself to want—to feel—anything so keenly.
Martin shakes himself, picks up another mug to wash.
It doesn't do any good to imagine something that's probably impossible.

Martin comes back early from his walk, and manages to burn Jonah's statement before Jon can finish reading it--at the price of Jon's voice.
Even so, Jon finds the courage to finally tell Martin something important.

This picnic is the latest in their monthly Saturday lunches. They see each other fairly regularly, especially the Futures dropping in at the book shop, but the standing lunch plans means they feel connected. But unlike their usual cafe stops, this lunch is special.
Blackwood wants to propose to Sims, and he's enlisted Tim and Sasha to help make it happen. Blackwood had specifically asked one of them to suggest a picnic, saying it would be suspicious if he brought it up.
