Summary
Rewrite of season 14 and 15 if things went just a bit differently. (And also, fuck the finale.)
Centered on Jack as he returns to the world after being drained of his grace by Lucifer at the end of season 13. This will loosely follow the plot of season 14 and 15, but only for certain plot points and conflicts. Inspired by religious philosophy, if Supernatural's Christian framing was a bit different (because fuck Chuck).
This will be a lengthy fic, I forewarn and apologize in advance!

“I just realised,” Sam says, and she thinks he might be lying. “I guess I was too busy to give it much thought at the time, but do you know who wasn’t in Dean’s heaven? Dad.”
“That can’t be true,” Mary crosses her arms. “Dean and John were always…”
“I know, it’s weird isn’t it?” Sam says. He’s toying with his bottle, rolling it from hand to hand. She notices it but she doesn’t know what it means, not the way John probably did. Not the way Dean would. “And they spent so much time together too, you’d think some of it must’ve been happy. But I guess that’s Dean and dad in a nutshell: normal enough on the surface, but scratch that away and all you find are secrets.”Ressurected (again) in a clumsy attempt at divine redemption (again) and stuck in the happily ever after part of the story, Mary does her best to cope with the motherhood she can never quite remember wanting. But Dean won’t stop screaming in his sleep, and Jack won’t stop trying to fix him and there’s a storm in the distance that won’t stop brewing.

Cas doesn’t look like a monster.
But neither does Dean.
John stands, slow. He holds out a hand. Calloused like Dean’s hands are calloused. Scarred the same way that Dean’s hands are scarred. There’s the smell of him in the air too. Earthy and dark, slightly sour around the edges. The room feels suddenly choked with it. Claustrophobic.
Cas probably smells like the fabric softener they buy in bulk at Costco, but so does Dean so he can’t tell.
John says, toneless, “I hear you’ve been driving my car.”

The signs are there, if she wants to read them, in the way that her boys walk and talk, their quick, abbreviated cadence; in the way they dress, military surplus and flannel. She doesn’t need to see the knife tucked into Sam’s belt or the holster at Dean’s side to connect the dots. No one called a priest after the demon split her open. No one moved on. John taught them this language, this swagger, this life. It’s all his.
Mary does not curl up and cry in the backseat of her sons’ car, even if she is within her rights. Mary does not shake their shoulders and demand to know what happened, what happened, what happened. She is the same age as Sam and four years younger than Dean. It has been more than three decades since she died.

Cas had lately been acting distant from the Winchester brothers. Sure, he’d disappear for weeks and never call, but he was acting distant right in front of their faces. Dean hadn’t noticed it until Sam pointed out the angel's short sentences, isolation, and overcast eyes were far from normal.
Basically Cas is molting (like a bird…) which causes him to get a little distant from the brothers because he doesn’t have anyone to help him molt. (Thus, the premise of this entire story) I don’t really know when this story would be set, basically the group is staying in the bunker and they just defeated Amara or somewhere along that timeline. :)
Can also be titled 'Cas gets ASMR Wing Treatment' (Because who doesn't want to be in an ASMR video...)

It takes him almost a week and the bullshit with Ramiel to decide to do it. Then another week between hunts to sort through his cassette tapes to find the right songs.
