Summary
Mycologist Grady McAllister is seeing things. Botanist Charles Bassett is not. When the two scientists are directed to get comfortable living in the research facility that will become their home for the next several months, both have varying reactions. While McAllister sees it as an opportunity to write his next book about endangered fungi in the Americas, the recently widowed Bassett finds himself less enthusiastic. However, when enthusiastically encouraged to get back outside by his eldest daughter, he packs up and leaves.
The objective, to remove and study a newly invasive breed of fungi that's causing both hallucinogenic and psychological effects. The task is simple enough until the fungi's spores are tied to strange, violent occurrences. Two deers tearing each other apart. One man, gouging his own eyes out. As the two uncover the mystery consuming their forest, something else entirely is beginning to consume McAllister from the inside out. Hallucinations peek around every corner- faces starting to blur and change before his very eyes.
With Bassett noticing his partner slowly withdrawing altogether, it begs the question that he never wanted to consider. Just who else was he going to lose?
