Summary
He wanted to take his hand and lead him through the fields back to Camelot, pull him through markets where sorcerers now plied their trades freely, to show him how Arthur had expressed his love.
He wanted to dig down with his bare hands, dirt caking his hands and under his fingernails, to cradle Merlin’s skull in his hands, to have some part of him back. He would even take the smallest toe bone if it was the only thing left, close his hand around that tiny fragment, just to have something to hold.
-Or, it isn't a battlefield, or a desperate, daring, do-or-die scenario. Merlin's magic is revealed, and Uther kills him for it.

“I’ll fix it.” Merlin croaks. “I’ll fix everything. We’ll switch places. You’ll be back in Camelot in no time. You’ll see Gwen again. I promise.”
Arthur makes a noise of protest but Merlin shushes him. “I know you don’t trust me anymore but I will make everything right.” Merlin vows.
The sorcerer truly means this, Arthur knows. Sincerity is practically dripping from every word. It’s such a Merlin thing to promise, with that earnest and determined tone. It only scares Arthur more.

There are distant yells, a group of knights gathered at the wall, pointing and shouting in his direction. He watches with little interest, as the group scatters like mice in the armoury, and soon the lower gate is opening. Two knights, riding full speed towards him, and Merlin swallows slowly as he recognizes the riders.

Summary
You know no one seems to appreciate Merlin enough. He has such a huge weight on his shoulders due to his destiny and somehow he can still put up with what a sweetheart Arthur is. He has saved that man's life and the entire kingdom too actually, numerous times and what was his thanks? Getting yelled at and insulted. How kind of them.

"I command you again," Sir Leon let out, "Show yourselves!"
Arthur rose first, his movements slow and careful. Merlin, after having gotten over the initial surprise, mirrored Arthurs movements, rising from his spot with both hands over his head. And he got to take in the ever so glorious sight of the four knights, looking between the two of them in pure confusion.
"I am truly sorry if we were a bother to you, sir knight." Arthur let out, a small tone of mockery in his voice.
"How-how is this...?" Gwaine let out, "How is this possible?"
---Once upon a time, a choice was made. A choice that would have held consequences for the kingdom of Camelot, and everyone who lived there, had it gone through. But it didn't.

Leon turned slightly so he was facing the young knight. “What is it?”
Emil hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Why does King Arthur do the cooking? Surely one of us should be doing it instead? Or a servant could have been brought along to do that sort of work?”
Despite Emil’s hushed voice, his words seemed to echo around their small camp.
“Arthur doesn’t bring servants on quests,” Leon said in a careful whisper, eyeing the king from his place on the dirt floor. “Not anymore.”

Someone else came and kneeled in front of Arthur. He thought distantly that it might have been Gwaine. Still, Arthur spared neither of the knights a glance nor a response as he cradled Merlin’s limp form closer to his chest. Maybe if Arthur held him close enough it would fill the gaping hole he felt where the king’s heart had surely been torn out.
“Arthur,” Leon said again, voice cracking this time as he spoke louder. He cleared his throat and continued. “You need to let him go. We need to take him home.”
