Moomin let out a slow breath. “I just wanted to say what I thought.”
“Then you did. And now you learn what it does to others. That’s not failure. That’s living.”
He said it like it was just a thing to know. Like how you had to peel bark away gently if you wanted to find the beetles underneath, or how the wind always made a hollow sound before rain. A piece of knowing that didn’t come from books or grownups or trying very hard, but from… living. Moomin thought Snufkin had a great many pieces like that. Moomin wanted some, too.

Every spring, Moomin awaits with shining eyes and a beaming smile the reunion of him and his best friend Snufkin. Little does he know, Snufkin feels much the same - perhaps even more.
To Snufkin, the spring isn't just beautiful because of the pinks and the blues of the blossoming flowers - it's because, with every spring, Snufkin knows there will be someone waiting for him in the valley with warm, open arms.
But now, Moomin won't be there this spring. Or the next spring. Or the next spring. Or perhaps until the end of time.And it's all Snufkin's fault.

Many years later, Snufkin finds himself traveling to Moominvalley one last time, side by side with a little lost stranger whose childlike nature reminds him all too much of his old friend. Snufkin grows to understand what it means to love other people, and understanding he made the worst mistake of his life leaving those he loved behind. . . Following the harrowing events in I surrender to the future / I’ll stay with you if you let me and following the next winter, when they unexpectedly landed in the Aegean Sea, in Twice If You're Lucky, Stede and Ed found themselves spending a winter in Barbados in She Will Have Her Way, during which they got engaged. Somehow, after their wedding, they ended up in the far north for their fourth winter together; in You Can Touch, Ed found a way to warm Stede up. (You don't need to have read any of the previous stories to follow this one!)
Stede also had an idea: host an Olympic Games! Skating, skiing, and many other competitions. But what if a rival group of pirates disrupted the event?
In the meantime, the co-captains held a private event; three games: Not Touching, Untouched, and Touching Everywhere.

It was the end of August and the days were still warm and filled with sunlight. But the nights carried a hidden chill, something most inhabitant's of Mominvalley barely noticed, but Snufkin was all too aware of. Autumn was on its way and the lust to walk had already begun to grow inside him. But the last couple of years, his wanderlust had been mixed with something else. Something that pleaded for him to stay just a little longer and to turn back to the valley a few days earlier. It had grown stronger over time and this year, he couldn't shake the feeling that autumn came too fast.
