Unfortunately).Fifteen hundred years later, Merlin’s still here—older, grumpier, and very much done with humanity’s nonsense. He’s spent most of that time waiting (somewhat dramatically) for Arthur to return, keeping his magic quiet and his expectations lower than sea level.
Then, in the chaos of the mid 21st century—climate crisis, endless wars, suspiciously bad Wi-Fi—Merlin feels it. Arthur is back. Not as a king, of course. That would be far too easy. No, he’s reborn into a wealthy but entirely unroyal family, with the charisma of a golden retriever and the attention span of a mayfly. Ooh, but Arthur's enemies also seem to have reincarnated. Merlin doesn't remember reading a disclaimer about that! Arthurs memory seems a bit patchy too. By which it seems is has almost entirely vanished. Slight problem?
The world doesn’t need monarchs anymore. It needs celebrities. Icons. So Merlin reinvents himself as a kindergartener (long story), grows up beside Arthur (longer story), and eventually becomes his manager (don’t ask).

So now, in the time he has left, Arthur spends his days writing—1,500 letters to be exact. Some of the legends give Arthur an additional half-sister, Elaine. Here’s how her existence as a background character, despite performing no great deeds or showing no particular extraordinariness, prompts an earlier magic reveal and a happier ending than they all originally got.
Will be canon compliant until the end of Season 3, then verge into AU territory, where everyone stays alive.
