Summary
Two men find themselves injured under the care of an elderly healer in a village. One has no memories and is stuck with a mask. The other, a traveling bard, has no problems remembering a past he’d rather forget. Both end up staying after their wounds are mended, as the amnesiac, who is named Hakuoro, had nowhere else to go, and the bard, who is named Tatsuo, would like to live a quiet life after traveling for half his life. Both of them, and especially Hakuoro, end up earning the villager’s trust by helping,living and working with them. However, that tranquil life ends after the country’s leaders, who care little for the people, go one step too far. Faced with this the two will lead the country’s people in rebellion in the hope of creating a just, tolerant country. But even after this is realized, and Hakuoro becomes King and Tatsuo Chancellor, peace is elusive, and the trials many. As they face them, they shall meet many people, some friendly, others enemies. It’s a tale of war, filled with moments of battles, toil, anger and tears. But it’s also filled with moments of joy, friendship, family, growth, discovery, and love. And in the end, the hopeful songs of peace and happiness may become reality. But at what cost?

Selkie really only scratched the surface, and I respect that choice, because it opened up a niche for this story!
