Summary
“You have been summoned to the Soltryce Academy, to study under the guidance of Archmage Zevran Margolis.” recited the mage, her face sour with distaste. “It is the duty of all with arcane abilities to use them to serve the glory of the Empire. You are to come with us. To Rexxentrum.”
More than eight hundred miles from Port Damali, almost a month’s travel. An entirely different universe. Any protests had been quickly stifled, tears ignored; the mage hadn’t allowed them even a minute to run upstairs and gather their things - the Empire will provide for you, they had been told. By then, the soldiers had been well-practised at extracting magically-talented children from their homes in the cleanest possible fashion, and they were swift and merciless.
And that had been it.*
In the early 800s, the Empire conquered and annexed the Menagerie Coast. Now, as the Dwendalian military machine continues to demand fresh recruits for their war in the northern wildlands, a group of young conscripts in Rexxentrum find their destinies drawn close together.

Summary
They’d gotten close to her old village, expecting to be able to handle whatever her old tribe threw at them. And Nott hadn’t expected much out of the clan.
…
“To save all of them,” leader said thoughtfully, folding his arms. Nott hated that she flinched with the movement, flashing to days when those arms would hit her. “That’s a hefty price, child.”
…
She inhaled, choking on river water.
Veth died for her family once. Nott wouldn’t mind doing it again.

Summary
Veth squeezed his hand gently and patted the back. “I’ve gotta pay bail first. Then we can get you out.” She whispered, forlorn, and placed a dry peck of the lips on his knuckles.
The boy still didn’t answer her. His fear was still a mask over his face, and Veth looked at it with a frown.
“I won’t hurt you, my boy.” She whispered. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
I wanted an alternate backstory where Veth meets a Feebleminded Bren and takes him in. And since they say ”God helps those who help themselves”, I just went ahead and started making it myself. Enjoy.

Summary
'Before he opened his eyes to the all consuming darkness that surrounded him, and before he pulled in a harsh breath through rattling lungs, he felt the cold. It was bone deep, deeper even, so deep that he felt it in the marrow, and in every tiny space where joints grated across the stiff planes under his skin. He was empty and the cold had been greedy to take up residence in the places rendered void of life.'
OR - Mollymauk wakes up alone, and proceeds to fill his life with people who love him in their own unique ways.

Summary
Bren had been on the run for over a month, never staying in one town for too long in fear of his past catching up with him. But there was only so much a runaway teenager could take before the toll of living in constant fear and desolation caught up with him. He had only intended to stay in Felderwin for a night or two before moving further south. He didn't expect to be dragged out of the cold streets and coerced into sleeping in the home of a formidable halfling woman who refused to take no for an answer, and he especially didn't expect to want to stay. But sometimes families happen to the people who need them the most, even if they think they don't deserve one.

Summary
Without realizing it, Nott had collapsed to her knees by the cell door in despair, staring despondently into the shiny bauble in her hand that was now the only item she had to her name. Seconds passed, or maybe minutes, before distantly she heard the sound of a snap, and a swath of warm fur brushed against her outstretched hands.
“What?!” Nott shrieked, backing away from the sudden appearance of a cat, before stepping towards it again with a growing snarl, bauble forgotten as it rolled away from her feet. She had been surviving off rats and thrown away food for the past few months, so a cat wouldn’t be any worse.
She was about to pounce forward when a quiet voice spoke up from the back wall, a soft wheeze audible between phrases. “Bitte… don’t eat… my cat.”
