Charles feels the other boy's admission like a blade slotted between his ribs. Of course it makes sense that Edwin has been loved before, witty and brave and loyal as he is, but the reality of his confession leaves the younger boy breathless. There is a familiar, though truthfully unknown burning in his chest. Something that feels like a threat.

Edwin finally reveals to Charles the extent of his time in Hell, and his conversation with the boy that damned him there to begin with. The younger ghost is confronted with feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. More than anything, he is worried that his companion has fallen in love with someone else, that it might already be too late…

He hardly registers Charles' movement, the swinging of the lantern toward the further pile of bodies, until he hears the younger boy draw breath as though to scream.
He watches his friend turn away in horror, an exclamation primed on his lips.
"Wh- wh..."
Edwin acts quickly and with less thought than he has given any action in his entire panic-laden existence. Where his hand had proven ineffective in the last instance to silence his companion, he opts instead for his lips, lurching forward with an anguished gasp and pressing his mouth to Charles' desperately.

Edwin and Charles share a fraught kiss in Hell. After their escape, the older boy is determined to move on, insistent on the utilitarian nature of the kiss. Meanwhile, his realisation-struck counterpart cannot seem to forget.

Charles Rowland never thought he’d be kissing Edwin, but here he was. He knows logically he should back away because he doesn’t feel that way about Edwin. Does he? He likes Crystal, not that he could ever be with her for obvious logistical reasons, but why does he want to kiss Edwin back? When Edwin storms away in shock, Charles can’t help himself. He has to stop him leaving.
Alternate universe (kind of) where Charles follows Edwin outside after he admits what the Cat King actually did, and he confesses his feelings for Edwin by kissing him extremely dramatically because he’s not good with words. (Yes this is very much RWRB confessions style 😽)
