“Saviour Isabeau, right?” Mirabelle nods and the stranger lets out a sharp bark of laughter, leaning in uncomfortably close. “You don’t have to go when he calls. What, is he your partner or something?”

    (“You said WHAT.”

    “I PANICKED."

    “YOU SAID ISA’S YOUR PARTNER???”

    “I KNOW?! I WAS THERE!?!”)

    -

A couple slips of the tongue is all it takes for the entirety of Vaugarde to become convinced that Mirabelle and Isabeau have gone through an epic romance - the greatest of the ages - that most can only dream of. Now, it's up to Mirabelle and Siffrin to keep up the illusion to the rest of the world, and make sure their party can never ever find out about this.

(aka, mirabelle panics, siffrin has a crisis, isabeau's only half-clueless, and no matter what the tabloids say, the fake dating stays fake dating)

"Why do you look at me like that?" Siffrin asks.

I've seen you die, Mirabelle thinks. I've seen you carve lines through your neck, I've seen you choke on air, I've seen you been crushed by a rock, I've seen you smile at me like it's the last thing you'll ever do.

And, damningly, I could never have imagined you with two eyes.

Mirabelle looks away, feeling her face flush. "No reason!!!"

(aka, years before the world freezes, mirabelle is haunted by the ghost of a friend she's yet to make. how can she possibly save someone she already knows is doomed?)

“Wait… is that why you stick to shadows? Because it’s easier to see?” Mirabelle said.

      “I stick to the shadows???”

“I thought it was just a cool mysterious loner thing!”

Isabeau couldn’t help but snort. He reached over and lightly mussed up Siffrin’s hair.
      -
“No.” He said it a bit too seriously, which he must’ve noticed as he smiled and mussed up Bonnie’s hair. “I can’t deny my Bonbon TWO of their three favorite foods!” He looked back to the shop. “Besides, I’m pretty sure they sell more than JUST Samosas. Though they might not be as… as…” They scrunched up their eye, glaring at the sign for a moment. Then their eye widened and they puffed themselves up as they said, “DE~LI~CIOUS as yours would be.”

“Why’d you say it weird?” Bonnie asked.

“I was trying to sound like Isa? It’s, uh… been a while. Since I heard that.” He trailed off again, staring into space…

Odile went over to the door and said, “Would you like to have this talk on a chair with some hot food, or would you rather keep staring through the window like an incompetent stalker?”

“Madame!” Mirabelle squealed. You can’t just?! Say that?!

But say it she did, and everyone else was laughing, even as Siffrin also tried to sink into his cloak like a turtle.
      -

Oh Change. “Hey, Siffrin? Are you okay?” Mirabelle walked over and… wait, crab, what does she do with her hands now? Um… “Pat Pat!” Head pats, sure! Wait… Oh Change, he actually leaned in that’s??? So??? Cute?!?!
      -

“Not long. Two minutes or so? Provided you don’t combust, Isa~”

“Wait, why would I combust???” Isabeau was already blushing some, holding his hands up defensively.

“EW! I don’t wanna hear you pretend to be Za being mushy! We get enough of that!”
      -
“Hmm, probably better than you attempting to do accents. Because, young one, if I didn’t know you, I’d think your attempt at mimicking me was offensive on purpose,” Odile said, smirking at Siffrin.

      “Sorry Madame.”

“Here,” she passed him those weird, opaque glasses that they’d… wait… when did she get those???

“What about you, Bonbon. Should I steal your hat~?” Siffrin teased, inching to where it was piled atop their things.

      “No. Borrow a spatula.”

“Bon yes bon!” They pulled a spatula. Brilliant!

“Wait! What can I give you…?” Isabeau said, making a sad puppy dog face. And that was fair! Siffrin’s ears weren’t pierced, and putting earrings on and off would be a chore anyways. And Isabeau’s gloves were just too big for Siffrin’s hands!

It apparently stumped everyone as they just stared…

Until Bonnie said, “Make your hair stand up like a bird’s.”

That alone got a chuckle out of some of them, and it turned to outright laughs when Isabeau fake cried, “So MEAN! I’m not a bird. I’m buff!”

“The buffest of birds,” Siffrin said, pressing again Isa and standing on tiptoes to kiss his cheek.

Bonnie threw some corn at them.

      “Worth it!” Isabeau chirped.

    Summary

Mirabelle is stuck in a time loop, all the way back in Dormont. She’s the only one looping and no matter how hard she tries to convince her friends of what’s going on, they just brush it off as her being over-anxious as always. She can’t seem to make much progress through the House of Change in her attempts to defeat the King and save Vaugarde, her one and only mission that she was “blessed by the Change God” to fulfill. She’s been stuck for a long time now, almost twenty loops! Oh, Change, how is someone like her supposed to do this alone?!? She just wants someone else to believe her when she tells them about the time loop, someone who can help her figure out how to escape! If only there was a person who knew a whole lot about time loops who could help.

If you're not careful, homesickness will drag you back…

    Summary

He looks so small, Mirabelle thinks, lying there. Eye closed, hands over his chest like he’s in a casket. Their expression is almost calm. There’s no fear on their face, no hurt, no sorrow. Just quiet acceptance. She hates that look. It’s worse, she decides. Worse than if they looked pained.

“Why?” Mirabelle whispers. She isn’t sure who she’s asking. Siffrin? Herself? A God who won't answer? "Why did you do this? Why now, why like this? Why didn’t I notice?"

Siffrin dies. The loop does not end.

“Thank you, Mira,” Ship whispered. “I meant it. You were the best person for this job. I hope I learn to do it half as good as you.”

Mirabelle couldn’t help but laugh, her voice taking on an echo. “Madame Odile said the same thing.”

Ship laughed as well. “She would, and blind it, she’s right. Of course she is.” They pulled her closer, tighter, then let go.

Pulling away, Mirabelle smiled as tears continued to fall down her cheeks. She wanted to tell Ship that they would be fine. She’d never asked if changing and taking on this responsibility had been their choice. She’d been scared to—scared of the possibility of leaving her friend alone in a position they’d never wanted.

As if reading the question in her eyes, Ship said, “I wanted this—to try again. This wasn’t how I imagined it turning out, but that’s usually how these things go, isn’t it.”

Mirabelle couldn’t tell if their tone was wry or resentful.

Ship looked up to meet Mirabelle’s eyes as she began to float upwards, skin and hair and clothes shining. Her Everlight shot out of her brooches and into Ship’s waiting hand, then into the star on their chest, leaving behind a silver coin in the center of their palm.

“Before you go, do you want to know what it means?” they asked. “The answer is boring, I’m afraid.”

“It’s not because you needed more ‘cents’?” Mirabelle’s voice was all echoes.

“I needed that, too,” Ship laughed. “But no. Like my tattoo, it was a reminder, but this one I get to remember.” They flipped the coin, catching it on its third flip. “It was a reminder that I don’t have a home to go back to. Turns out lies are easy to believe and easier to remember.”

They flipped the coin towards Mirabelle. She reached to catch it, but it passed right through her and landed in the water just as the stars took her home.
