    Summary

“You could stay,” Zuko blurted. “Here. In the Fire Nation.” He sucked in a deep breath and ducked his head to look at his hands. “As an ambassador on the council. If you want.”
Sokka’s breath caught in his throat. He could stay? As an ambassador? Like, with a job and a title? He could be someone again. This trip didn’t have to end. “Yeah,” Sokka breathed.
“What?” Zuko looked up, his eyes wide.
    “I want to.”

    or:

After what was supposed to be a week trip, Sokka ends up staying in the Fire Nation as an ambassador.
A month later, Sokka finds himself navigating a new crush and a fake relationship (and, yes, unfortunately those things are related).

    Summary

    Zuko was a coward.
So much of a coward that he had spent two hours and over ten sheets of paper fretting over how to phrase a letter to Sokka.
So much of a coward that he still had no letter to send.
So much of a coward that he was kneeling over the toilet, about to throw up, because in his last attempt he wrote with a little too much honesty about his feelings and it freaked him the fuck out.
    This was ridiculous.
He was just trying to invite Sokka over for a week trip to the Fire Nation for Zuko’s birthday. As a friend. Why did his inappropriate feelings have to keep seeping into the characters he had been carefully writing?

    or:

Zuko did not make a mistake in inviting Sokka to be an Ambassador on the Fire Nation Council.
But he might have made a mistake in trusting Sokka's plan. A plan which involved pretending to date each other.
It wouldn't be a problem if only Zuko hadn't fallen for his best friend.

”The balance is gone. Avatar Aang has died and the cycle is broken.” Old-man-Aang-without-the-arrows. Momo screeched, desperately trying to reach him before the dream forced him away and he woke up.

“The other bonds are gone. His bending masters and friends have also perished during this war.” Tall-and-fierce-face-painted-Aang murmured, looking resigned and less fierce.

Female-Aang-with-arrows flashed her blue shimmered gray eyes at the frantic Momo with a calm, shrewd look in her gaze that reminded Momo of Sokka, “Not all of the Avatar’s bond has perished.”

What if Azula had been born a few years later? Allowing her to be four years younger than Zuko?
What if the life-changing Agni Kai had happened a few years later?
What if Zuko and Azula were actually close and loving siblings?
What if everyone was three years older than what was expected when the Avatar would return?
What if Zuko had a change of heart earlier on?
And what if even the smallest detail could change the flame of fate?

    Summary

There was a secret kept within the heart of the Fire Palace. It was a closely guarded secret that the new Firelord brought with him in the aftermath of the war. A secret that would haunt Zuko for the rest of his life and fill him with doubt.

A sacrifice was made, a choice that Sokka would never ever regret, but Zuko wished that somedays he would for the sake of his conscience. When a life debt is repaid in full, neither Sokka or Zuko could have ever predicted the outcome that would follow their dogged decision to help each other.

    Summary

Each step was unsteady as Zuko picked his way through the darkness, finding his footing uneven as if everything around him was shifting and moving. As if it were breathing beneath him. But it didn’t feel like he was inside a living thing. Not that he had any experience in being swallowed whole by giant fish monsters, but he expected it to probably be more….squishy. Foul smelling? Warmer? It felt ridiculously cold in his opinion.

“You didn’t touch the white glowy ball, did you?” A voice that was far too familiar spoke up in the dark. He reared back with a grimace as the blue glow grew stronger like a spark igniting into a grand pyre. He recoiled and held his hands up, expecting an attack as if from Azula’s flame but when nothing came, he squinted at it and noticed it was vaguely human shaped.

“The glowy ball?” His voice echoed. “You mean that orb of light?”

“Zuko?!” The sound of shock was far too loud causing him to flinch as he recognized that voice for certain.

“Water tribe.” Zuko grimaced. “What are you doing here?”

“I went fishing.” The water tribe boy gave a dry laugh. “Normally I’m a master at catching fish but this time the fish caught me when the boat capsized in the storm.”

“I know my father was wrong about so many things,” Zuko finally said, “but everything he’s said about me feels so true."

Zuko was born with a heart condition. It made him weak. Ozai made sure he knew that.

When Zuko arrives at the Western Air Temple, he has a lot to unlearn from the shards of his childhood.

"'The fog was where I wanted to be.'" Everything is different. The pitch of his voice, his posture. The auditorium goes silent. No one can take their eyes off of him.

    …He's amazing.

Zuko had to perfect the art of acting as a child to survive the horrors of his homelife. When he got older, it was only natural to take his talent to the stage for entertainment and escape.

Enter Sokka, a craftsman and set designer with a giant heart who is haunted by plenty of ghosts of his own.

A tale of trauma, disability, family, creativity, and love.

    Summary

Book one ends with two major diffrences: 1. Sokka went on the mission with Hahn (it did not go well) 2. Zhao survives the North Pole and that proves unfortunate for everybody (except Zhao, obviously)

Imprisoned on Zhao’s war ship, Sokka and Zuko have to work together to survive. They are not very enthusiastic about this prospect.

    And they argue.

    A lot.

    Podficcers note:

I'm sorry, I do not intend to record war games. I am not in the avatar the last Airbender fandom anymore, and the story would currently be an almost 60 hour podfic and it isn't even done. I don't undertake things that long.

“You walk around differently, fight like you’re favoring one eye, and you don’t react as much or at all when things get too close to your face,” Toph told him like she was accusing him of something.

“Left eye,” he touched a couple fingers under his eye. “I thought the burn was bad. Don’t get me wrong the pain was, and I can ignore the scar when I don’t look in the mirror…or ideally when nobody is around, but my vision is a constant reminder. I don’t see like how everyone else does…I’d prefer to not talk about it anymore.”

Zuko couldn't force himself to stop trembling.

Ever since he and Sokka had broken into the prison and freed some of its prisoners, Sokka and Katara's father Hakoda included, Zuko couldn't stop shaking.

At this point, he knew that a breakdown was imminent.

Firebenders’ skin doesn’t burn easily. Fire Lord Ozai knows this.

When Crown Prince Zuko kneels before him with tears streaming down his face, the Fire Lord understands that it will take a considerable amount of effort to brand him.

It would be shameful for a crown prince to bear the mark of a coward, after all. A banished prince, on the other hand...

Well, if he survives long enough for it to scar, that is. Ozai is indifferent to either outcome.
