When they tangled with Vecna, Eddie’s body gets left behind.
Sure, yes, they all know the timeline, the logistics, how the story goes. The gates seal. Supergirl goes nuclear. They kinda-half-lose. The town’s a fucking mess. They gotta lick their wounds.
But the in-between bits get hazy, see.
Specifically when Steve went AWOL and ran back, jumped through the closing gate he’d just barely managed to climb up through in the first place, given the extent of his own wounds, and runs for the body they’d abandoned because he doesn’t leave his people behind.
And somehow in just the span of a couple days, Eddie counted as his people. Even just his body.
The strength, the speed, the stamina to not have been stuck in the Upside Down, to not have dropped the dead weight on the way back up, to not have gotten suctioned in and crushed in half as the fissures crept closed: that’s the fucking stuff of legends, of parents lifting trucks off pinned children. No wonder they call Steve ‘Mom’.
But yeah. Eddie’s body’s left behind.
For like…ten minutes, max.

It was Steve who dealt the final blow, in the end, with his trusty nail bat, the same one that Jonathan made himself back in '83. The battle had been hard, injuries galore, and he was pretty sure he'd broken all of his ribs, in multiple places. It hurt to think (not another concussion, please for the love of whatever higher power that is-), it hurt to breathe, it hurt to move. At all. But still, Vecna was still stood, surrounded by the bodies of the Upside-down creatures he'd commanded. They'd made him bleed, but he wasn't done yet.
So Steve did what Steve did best. He rushed in, and hit him, really hard, with a nail-spiked, upside-gunk-covered bat.OR
The Final battle against Vecna goes well... too well. Even with members of their party still in the hospital (Lucas, watching over a recently-awoken Max)... The group should have known that Vecna would get the last laugh. They couldn't have predicted just how deep this last confrontation would carve.

The final battle—like the last part of the very final battle—ends with shattering, and with dust.
“Live through this,” Steve had breathed against Eddie’s angry red lips before they parted, hard enough that it stung for how raw he’d been kissed; “so we can pick up where we left off.”
“I will if you will,” Eddie had shot back, defiant; still begging.
And Steve had kissed him again, and Eddie’d watched as Steve walked away with Eddie’s taste on his lips as he’d spoken:
“I’ll hold you to it.”
And in the end: Eddie holds to the bargain.
But Steve.
Steve…Steve Harrington, with the bitchiest glare and the brightest smile and the goofiest laugh and the biggest fucking heart, the bravest of all of them and the best part of Eddie’s whole soul—
Steve gets hit, and disappears from the world in nothing but a cloud of dust.

Or: Steve leaves nothing but ashes behind when he falls in the final showdown with Vecna.
Maybe a lovesick Eddie falls apart and gathers those ashes in his grief; his heartbreak.
Maybe the ashes aren’t just ashes, and maybe Eddie’s boyfriend wasn’t entirely just human.

" Make him pay. " were Eddie's last words to him, though it seemed that he wanted to add something else. Steve simply watched him in agreement, leaving him behind with Dustin.
He should have known back then that Eddie would sacrifice himself for the sake of the others, for Dustin especially, who viewed him as a parental figure, just like Steve. They argued about that, for god's sake. He should have known, only by the last look Eddie gave him, filled with an intensity he never imagined coming from him. He should have stayed with him and maybe, just maybe, Eddie would still be here. They would all have laughed together, hugging and celebrating their victory.But Eddie Munson had faith in Steve Harrington, and he could not even protect him.

This fic is basically what Netflix (cowards) didn't show us : the character's (mainly Steve's) reaction to the death of Eddie Munson, the beloved. It is also kind of a rewriting as I don't follow exactly the storyline, but rather twist it in a way that hurts. :)
It starts at the killing Vecna part, and ends at a part that I invented. -
