Summary
Marion’s footfalls were heavy; she felt more than heard them. He saw what Jean held, yanked the door closed, and took hold of her by the shoulders. Jean tore her gaze away from the card and saw in Marion’s eyes her own hollowness reflected.
He had not seen this.
Marion had lost his premonitions, and Jean knew, just as she knew it about herself, that he could not stand to lose more than that. For her part, Jean was cold inside, but not in a way that would make her shake. Her hands were steady. The train had faded. She folded the card and placed it back in the envelope.
Very gently, without allowing their fingers to touch, Marion took the envelope from her. He tucked it inside his waistcoat over his heart. Then his eyes searched hers, solemn and resigned to what they would have to do. “Do we have time,” he asked softly, “to get Nathaniel and Auntie Bee?”
