Stede can’t help crying out in pain, in the next beat, finally giving in when an instinctive sound comes up. It’s loud, and the crew goes dead silent around him.
Stede doesn’t even notice. He’s just trying to breathe, skin tugging painfully, when a door bangs open at the opposite end of the ship.
“What the fuck was that?” Ed demands from afar, voice heard easily over the crash of the sea around them. “Was that Stede? Where the fuck is he?”
“Oh, no,” Lucius says quietly.
“If you jump overboard, babe, I swear I’ll come back for you,” Black Pete promises him.

And maybe Stede isn’t some nightmare pirate, and maybe he’s not the vision that Blackbeard inspires, and maybe he’s not scary. Maybe he’s not made of smoke, with glowing eyes; maybe he’s not a hero, or a villain, or anyone but some poor shit who thinks he knows what he’s doing when nobody really ever knows.
But he knows two things: he knows that he will kill for Ed; and he knows that this man knows that, too.

Shi Qingxuan briefly peers through the window again. “Does it matter much to you, Lord Black Water? What is it you said to me in the Imperial City? When you dropped me off, cold and alone?” He Xuan pauses his eating. The way his shoulders tense, it almost makes him look as frail as those jade teacups. Shi Qingxuan answers for him, since He Xuan cannot. “We owe nothing to each other, anymore. All debts written off the ledger.”
“...then, why do you wish to talk to me at all?”
“To see why you are here,” Shi Qingxuan answers, honestly. “I do wonder why, if we are really done with each other. Back then, you seemed very intent on wiping your hands clean of the entire situation.”
He Xuan remains stubbornly silent. Shi Qingxuan is not surprised.
“Your reasoning remains inscrutable,” he whispers. “I suppose that is how you like things. Does it make you feel more in control? When only you know the truth of your intentions? Ah. I have to leave, He Xuan. I suppose I will see you again when I come to the mortal realm. That is where I always find you following me.” Getting up, Shi Qingxuan leaves the table and exits the teahouse.
