    Summary

Irving would cautiously try to do something new, and realize that the ‘new’ things were not supposed to be. Just this morning, he changed clothes, finally being able to bathe, and realized he had never chosen his own outfit before. He reiterated the same point many, many times, and Burt responded with the same shock, as it dawned on them how much they had been missing from daily life.

    --

When Burt and Irving escape the severed floor with their innie memories in tact, they find a pet friendly hotel room with a kitchenette to live in, and a new job at a restaurant to support their new lives as innies on the run. Irving, as he flicks through a photo album from his youth that he had stolen from his house, is finding it hard to connect his past to his present, unable to see the young man as himself. Was he the same person as his outie? It was difficult to navigate his rapidly developing relationship that is a part of his new life, while trying to find pieces of his past in the details of the fading, old photos from 40 years ago.

Peter wished things had been different. He bent over backwards trying to burn fulfillment: collecting mere pebbles, playing poker, shepherding his daughter’s band… little things. But it was never enough, he was never enough. Not without Gemma.

And that was about to change.

(The backstory of Petey’s reintegration. Featuring: Petey dad jokes, slice of life casino shenanigans, Radar being a very good boy, poetry, and fanart I drew. This will mostly focus on the Outies, but be sprinkled with Innie scenes.)

    Summary

A character study of Irving from the television show Severance, as he falls in love with Burt. Other characters are briefly featured in the story, but it is mostly focused on the two of them. This is VERY self-indulgent and full of internal monologues. It is NOT canon-compliant, but involves a happy(yet angsty) ending for ALL characters!

I hope you enjoy it. I wanted to make a contribution to this ship's fan fictions because there are so few of them! Thank you for reading, and please let me know what you think!

Title is from Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. Fantastic book, truly. I recommend it.

    Summary

"(In my sleep I dreamed this poem)

Someone I loved once gave me
    a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift."

title from Mary Oliver's poem "The Uses of Sorrow"

After Attila, Irving spends more time with Burt and Fields, in investigation and in companionship, learning to trust and unlearning sorrow. When Fields leaves the picture, Irving realizes how short life is and makes a choice.

    Summary

Irv turned to the canvas on his easel. The painting was close to completion. He familiarised himself for a moment with what he had already: the waxy green leaves and the lush fronds, and the two central figures. This was where he had run into trouble.
Only one portrait was unfinished; Burt’s portrait, as it lent its forehead against the painting’s final blank spot, was done, glowing with as much life as Irving could instill in it. It was his own portrait that was unfinished, a patch of empty canvas, underpainting showing through.

OR: Irving is having trouble painting himself in love. Luckily, Burt is there.

    Summary

“You… like it?” Irving asks, vulnerable, pitched halfway between a statement and a question.

And Burt thought he was a stranger.

“Of course, I like it,” Burt replies, automatic, honest. “I love it, it’s— It’s me!”

This time, there’s a touch of a laugh in Irving’s voice when he repeats, “Yes, it— it is. I suppose it is.”

or: in another life, burt, a newly-retired former curator, finally talks to irving, the artist he's noticed in his art museum (and crushed on) for years.

    Summary

    A reckoning.

‘If it isn’t the devil himself. I’d recognize that hair anywhere. Still using the same mousse, I wager.’
Irving turns to see who spoke, and doesn’t recognize the source. The speaker cuts an imposing figure, square-jawed and stern looking, even as he stands a couple of inches shorter than him. The interloper seems to know Burt, though, as he smiles at him, and Burt smiles back, albeit guardedly.
‘You have the advantage of me. I’m Irving,’ he says, extending his hand.
The other man takes his gaze off of Burt and shakes his hand, firm and polite. ‘I’m Cecil. I used to be married to this scoundrel.’

    Summary

Irving’s eyes focus in, staring at the path of his own hand as he lets his palm run up over Burt’s soft stomach to his chest.

“Oh,” he says, slipping out of him, more sound than word. “I can—” He huffs a laugh, incredulous. The backs of his eyes prickle, his sinuses burn. His voice is unexpectedly choked when he tells him, “I can feel your heart beating.”

It’s nearly as fast as Irving’s, and steady, and strong. He’s alive, right under his hand, where his palm presses to exposed skin and body-warm white cotton.

Burt reaches up, letting his hand settle along Irving’s throat. He hasn’t undressed nearly as far, not yet, but—

“And I can feel yours,” he says, palm over his pulse point.

    Summary

As Irving took the first steps down the stairs, his excitement was overwritten by a looming sense of dread, slowly crawling to him from behind. He heard laughter again. Irving slowly traveled downwards, inching closer to him.

It was a calling. An unexplained pull. It was a feeling that the root of his woes were there, or the very reason that half of him felt like he was missing someone. Both sides yearned, since his reintegration, but one was particularly loud in its want to ease it. When he turned the corner and met the eyes of his arrived guest, he stopped, feet planted where they were.
