Summary
Steve Harrington, a recent high school graduate who didn't get into college, is now being forced by his father to work in the brand-new Starcourt Mall, at Scoops Ahoy, an ice cream parlor.
Steve was a bit of a charmer in high school, and he isn't going to let a recent breakup or this unflattering job stop him from getting a date. Only problem is, none of the girls he asks says yes.
Just when Steve's convinced that free samples and failed attempts are all he'll get this summer, someone new walks into Scoops. And it changes everything.

Eddie had more than half a mind to leave—to cut his loss on being caught and hope that the guy keeps this whole thing to himself. The metalhead cannot even be sure if he knows who the guy is from how far away they had parked from the back of the mall—and, even if Eddie’s and Billy’s cars are pretty recognizable in Hawkins, who was to say that this guy was from Hawkins or if he even knew either Billy or Eddie?
He should go. He should leave. He should never agree to do another drug deal anywhere semi public again.
But Billy looks pretty pissed—and the blonde is on some pretty heavy steroids. This random ass guy that was unlucky enough to catch them in the act of an exchange did not deserve to get beaten all to shit. Best case scenario is that Eddie is just back up to Billy intimidating the guy into keeping his mouth shut—worse case scenario he prevents a murder from happening during one of his own drug deals.
Yeah, murder would be bad for business."

It was 2023 in boring Hawkins, Indiana, and Steve Harrington didn't know what he was doing with his life. Home from college with a barely passing GPA, recently dumped, and drunkenly careening down a dark country road to the tune of his own misery, Steve was aware that he might be depressed. Therapy would've been the sane solution. But before he could turn around and make that choice, a glowing red hole cracked open in the middle of the road, and he was sent flying through time and space.
It was 1985 in boring Hawkins, Indiana, and Eddie Munson had a five step plan written out for his life. First, graduate high school. Second, provide a kickass D&D campaign for the nosy little freshman that joined Hellfire. And finally, write more music and go on tour with his band. Ok, three step plan. Absolutely nothing about his plan-in-progress included stumbling across the hottest man he'd ever seen stranded on the side of the road. Or the glowing red portal to hell parked next to him.

Steve's just trying to get through school, so finding out that alternate-dimension monsters exist, surviving said weird alternate-dimension monsters, and discovering he has some kind of freaky magic was not part of the plan.

Robin Buckley’s life has never been particularly exciting, but she does find that lately, it’s full of surprises.
She’s surprised at how easy it is to excel in all of her senior-level classes. She’s surprised at how much fun she’s having with her best friend at their grating yet tolerable job. Hell, she’s surprised that Steve Harrington’s her best friend in the first place.
And she’s never liked surprises, but these are the good kind of surprises.
The good kind, that is, until she finds herself in a place she never imagined she’d be: head-over-heels for her best friend’s ex-girlfriend, Nancy Wheeler.
