Summary
Martin can also hear...other things. Things he’s only ever read about, before. Things like type A subvocalizations. The first time he heard Sasha growl at Tim for using her fancy-brand coffee creamer it was all Martin could do to stop himself from diving under his desk. Or bending over the desk and begging one of them to fuck him. It’s like an entirely new world has opened up to him. A weird, horny new world he wishes he could leave.
Sometimes, though. Sometimes it’s a bit interesting. Like the time Jon says "Have you made any more progress on the Hither-Green case?" but the sub-audible hum in his chest says worried, I am worrying, hello, are you okay, are you safe, and without even thinking about it, Martin responds, “Um, I’m fine, thanks.”
And then Jon gives him such a look of alarm, like Martin has suddenly developed mind-reading powers, or something. Well, it serves him right for badgering Martin until he suffered a spontaneous goddamn sex change, alright, Jon can deal.

Jon’s heat creeps up. It takes him by surprise; it’s just… been so long. Jon hasn’t been on suppressants since he fled the institute and hid away at Georgie’s place. So it isn’t something that's been on his mind these days. He mistakes the restlessness as anxiety, his many, many worries over monsters and rituals. The shivers of loneliness that haunt him weren’t anything new, even as they become a permanent feeling, like background noise; an ache for something he wants and needs, but can’t quite put a name to.
Well, he thinks he has a name for it. But he hasn’t even seen Martin in weeks.

It seems that no amount of gentle prodding can quite convince Jon that this is not Martin’s first go on the estruation rodeo, and that he has, in fact, survived roughly fifteen years worth of heats without Jon’s intervention.
To be honest, Martin isn't trying particularly hard to prove his point. Maybe Martin doesn't really mind being guarded. Maybe Martin deserves a bit of white-knighting, after all he's been through.
