The captain felt fine when he went out the door this morning, he felt fine when he woke up to Anthony lovingly snuggling him from behind before he went to make breakfast, he felt fine when he had ate said breakfast.
So why, now of all times and places, did he suddenly not feel fine? He had a feeling but he didn't want to acknowledge it. It couldn't be, he wouldn't let it be, not today, today was important.
He couldn't have an inconvenient thing ruin such an important day.

The Captain and Havers find comfort in the woods near Button house. Far enough away that they felt almost safe from the Judgmental attitudes of 1940s England.
I calculated it, and the time between the captain's diary entry in the button house archives about Lt Havers coming to Button House and him leaving for North Africa was only two months. Cap fell hard and fast, huh.

Summary
The Captain was finally at peace with his life, his own war was now complete and he could at last move on with everything.
He now had a family who, despite all their resistance, did genuinely want to spend time with him. The Captain now felt loved, not only by his boyfriend but by everyone that surrounded them, encapsulating his life into one existence.
But now he had a new dilemma, what now? The afterlife was different to the "real world", he didn't need a job to pay bills, because everything was free. He no longer needed his uniform because there was no war, but without his uniform he didn't know who he was.
He was slowly morphing into James and he didn't know what to do.
OR the one where The Captain doesn't know who he is because the afterlife in inconceivably different to the over-world and he struggles to cope (a little).

The Captain didn't think he'd move on for a while, considering his sins and all, but this was now getting ridiculous. Even Julian had moved on before him and that man was all sin!
No, this had to be because of something else other than your troubled past.
But now Captain James Montgomery sat in an empty room with only the memories of those who went before him, trying to keep himself as busy as you can in a hotel environment but alas, no one to talk to.

Cricket.
His ears turned pink.
“Cricket, you say? Ah, well, yes. I’d... I’d be delighted to!”
That was the first time Higgins had stuttered, and both him and Anthony noticed.
An alternate universe, where the roles are swapped. A lot of angry feelings, and a lot of birds. (And also a lot of chapter titles based on songs that I think are them: multi-genre this time.)
