Thomas was the son of a merchant. A rather unfortunate one at that who had been seized by the crown for unpaid loans and thrown into debtors prison. When he is sent to be a servant in the palace he is met with an even more daunting prospect: the princess herself.

Sometimes Thomas feels blood dripping onto him from beneath the bedroom. The stains are growing, seeping down, spilling out.

This year is different. This year has Thomas. And Thomas is still so freshly turned he’s practically human, at least in his mind. Maybe still hers, too. He’s been nervously fretting about the past week, and Ellen feels a little guilty she didn’t realize it might have to do with the time of year.
“Your pet is especially anxious as of late,” Orlok remarks only two days before Valentine’s. “Pray, put us all out of his misery.”
