Thomas refuses to return to Downton Abbey until his innocence is proven and Matthew is desperate to prove it, with the help of Mrs Hughes and Tom. Though even if they manage to, will everything truly return to normal? They both knew that their love would never be easy but they hadn't expected it to be this hard; especially with the village talking. Sometimes even the darkest corners aren't dark enough to hide every secret.

However, with the Crawley family and the Downton Abbey staff, it is making it much more difficult to keep things hidden.

While I do think the idea of Richard Ellis being a fleeting love interest for Thomas was more realistic, I enjoyed their chemistry too much and was not happy with A New Era, so this is a kind of rewrite - but only of the Thomas storyline, of course. A (properly) happy ending for the silly boy (his words, not mine).

Servants had shuffled in and out, chairs scraped across the stone floor, and teacups clinked against saucers but Thomas had thought only of the night before in the marquess’s room.
