Fourteen years ago, Junie Daye lost her mother, October "Toby" Daye, to the machinations of Simon Torquill and her life was turned upside down. Unbeknownst to her, Toby had been turned into a fish in the koi pond of Golden Gate Park the whole time, slowly burning away the spell Simon had placed on her with the dawn. Toby lost almost everything when the spell finally broke, leading to her deciding to leave Faerie and all but Junie behind.
Junie thought everything was finally going to be okay when she got her mom back, but leaving Faerie behind was a decision she hadn't been prepared for her mom to make. Though she goes along with it, it's harder for her than her mom since she still had active ties to not just Faerie as a whole but specifically to the Duchy of Shadowed Hills. Give it time, she keeps telling herself, she just needs time to readjust and then she'll change her mind.
Six months later, Junie is still clinging to the idea that she just needs to give her mom time. And then Evening Winterose is murdered and they're pulled back in whether Toby is ready or not.
