When Berk is attacked by dragons on an early morning, Hiccup attempts to shoot down what looks to be a Night Fury who was attacking alongside the raid, but while he did shoot it down and saw it go down to the forest, when he goes to find it, instead, he finds a Light Fury. And with his own decision, Hiccup let's the dragon go despite the chance he had after all the neglect he's felt his whole life. But when he finds her again near a grove, without a tailfin and in need of help, Hiccup decides to help it, and from there, they grow a bond unlike any other dragon and human has ever had before.

The creature laid on his paws, sleeping. Beside it, a smaller, more human creature lay under its wings. It was dawn. It was raining. The boy and the dragon lay in perfect comfortable silence. Just like their bond, they were inseparable.
Back on an island, vikings stood around. Their chief fired an arrow at a boat which contained no remains. It was a mournful day. The village dunce was gone. Truly gone. Black scales were found near his blade covered in blood. It could only mean one thing. He was really gone, eaten by a beast as black as night.
The NightFury. The accursed beast. Silent vows were made that day to avenge the boy.
At that moment, all was wrong within the world.
While back on a different island, the boy and dragon awoke and began their day. Playful splashing in the water ensued. It was peaceful and all was right in the world.

He’s completely on his own, save for a profoundly outcasted viking and his dragon.
Hiccup hasn’t come back to Berk in years, instead spending his time wandering around the islands following and studying dragon migration patterns. In his travels he finds an odd character and adjusts to the implications of his existence: that magic is real, and although wondrous, it is not always benevolent. And while they have each other in this dangerous and vibrant world, it might as well be the blind leading the blind.
