Summary
For Zoey, the world slowed down. Her stomach dropped. She could hear her friends laughing like in slow-motion and she knew: This was it. This was the moment. The moment she’d been waiting for for months now. She had imagined it out a thousand times, how she would say it, how they would react – but now that it was actually here, she felt anxiety rising in her chest, making her break out in sweat. She felt the words scrunch up in the back of her throat, unable to move forward and leave her lips, making it hard to breathe. She’d shown Rumi and Mira so much more of her than she had let anyone else see, but still, they didn’t know her fully. There was something she hadn’t told them, even though she had known it for a long time.
Mira’s and Rumi’s laughs were ebbing away, only a few seconds had passed. Zoey hadn’t missed her chance yet, and she wouldn’t. She swallowed, braced herself, and finally pushed the words out, her voice low, but firm, “I’m into girls, too.”
