I fixed my gaze out the windshield, my voice trembling as I forced the words out. “I don’t dress for myself most days. I dress for damage control. For… defense. Like if I wear the right thing, I can blend in just enough to avoid the scrutiny.”
Will absorbed my disclosure, quiet and attentive.
“You don’t have to blend in with me,” he finally said, and his words wrapped around me like a warm embrace, making me feel both seen and safe, intertwined with sadness.

“Will?”
Will hums absently, not taking his eyes off the comic.
Mike frowns slightly at the slight dismissal, but keeps going until he’s standing by the couch.
“We need to talk,” he says, keeping his voice strong. Firm. Confident.
Even if he feels none of those things.
“Uh huh,” Will responds absently, mouthing the words of the comic to himself, “okay.”
Normally that small quirk of Will’s would have him smiling, but right now all it succeeds in doing is making him more annoyed.
Mike narrows his eyes, “Will.”
Will finally looks up, his eyebrow raising in silent question.
“Yes, Mike,” he says slowly, as if he thinks Mike is the one being weird and slow. “I can hear you.”

Or; after Will leaves Mike a confession letter thinking he'd going to his death to defeat Vecna, this is Mike's reaction to him coming back and acting like it never happened. He's scared, confused, annoyed and not sure why he's feeling all these different emotions. It's not like he loves Will back, is it?

“I-” Will trembles, blinking roughly against the moisture in his eyes. “Stop it, you’re being mean.”
Mike stops for a moment before shaking his head. He sits up, ignoring Will’s panicked questions, and slides down onto the floor. He lays on top of the covers, not quite touching, but close enough to feel his body heat.
“Will,” he says softly, their eyes locking once more, “I like you.”
Will’s lips tremble and his breath catches. “No you don’t.”
Mike nods, smiling encouragingly. “I do.”
“You can’t,” he fights, “you can’t like me.”

“‘I was trying to help,’ Will confesses, which is the truth.
Mike blinks at him. ‘You lied, Will,’ he says, pointedly. ‘I don’t… I don’t understand why you’d lie about something like that. Why you’d lie about someone being able to…’ His brows furrow, his voice thick and heavy as though weighted by sobs he tries to suppress, ‘about someone being able to love me like that.’
And Will almost says, stupidly, I didn’t lie about that part, but he doesn’t.”
Mike navigates through his confused feelings after El breaks up with him just a month shy of his high school graduation. Will learns to manage his own emotions while finally rebuilding his relationship with his favorite person in the world. As they find themselves, they learn to find each other in a way they are so familiar with, but ache to acknowledge.
Until, of course, they have no choice but to recognize how, despite what happens, they will always be united — in love, in hurt, in loss, and especially in grief.
Or, El dumps Mike’s ass and when Will tries to fix their relationship, something more beautiful and real is created instead.
