The first thing Tommy felt when he learned about his brother’s death was shock. An overwhelming, all encompassing, completely unignorable feeling of shock. Not sadness, not anger, not grief, or anything else you’d expect. Only shock.
Wilbur wasn’t supposed to die. Not yet at least.
Wilbur was 24, he was young, he was healthy, he was alive. He was supposed to live happily with a wife and kids, and grow old grey and uglier than he already was, and die when it was appropriate. Wilbur was supposed to live a life.
Wilbur was not supposed to overdose on drugs Tommy didn’t even know he took, in the bathroom of his downtown apartment, during his youngest brother’s first week back to school.
And Tommy wasn’t supposed to be the one who found him.
