Because Shuichi is a detective, but also because Kokichi is his romantic partner of six months, Shuichi knows a thing or two about how Kokichi emotes. When the problem is small, his reaction is proportionately larger. He cries and wails and hugs on Shuichi’s arm until bouncing back with a wide, beaming smile. The crocodile tears used to be frustrating, but Shuichi eventually reasoned out that Kokichi uses the big fits as an outlet for unrelated stress and decided to just, more or less, let it happen. It’s not like it hurts either of them, after all.
No, the real harm happens when Kokichi is really upset, when something really serious has happened… Not because Kokichi gets mean, or violent, or anything awful like that—but because he doesn’t react much at all. Shuichi listens closely for the sound of Kokichi’s footsteps (light) padding through the apartment, then turns back to what he was doing.

Surely, DICE is just messing around. He likes to flirt with Shuichi perhaps a little too much—had flirted during their first meeting, in fact, though Shuichi quickly realised after DICE got away that he only did as much to get away from the police who were closing in. Shuichi can’t figure out what it is about him that inspires that kind of teasing from the thief… Maybe he just has particularly entertaining reactions?
Regardless, Shuichi’s face is turning red. He’s like a big red button to a toddler.
“So this is your first of three clues I’ve hidden around the city… Yes, a scavenger hunt, my beloved! You like those, don’t you? They’re like cocaine to a drug sniffer dog’s detective.”
Shuichi frowns, feeling his blush recede at the metaphor.
