"So yes, as the contingency plan, I still come last. The prison riot was different because that was both of us in danger, but if it only has to be one of us in danger, then it's going to be me. Always." Buck declared, voice hard and eyes meeting Eddie's evenly.
"You aren't a fucking contingency plan!" Eddie exclaimed, arms gesticulating wildly.
"Yes. I. Am." Buck ground out, hands fisting where they now rested at his sides.
.................................................................................
Or the one where Buck puts himself in danger to save Eddie and the two boys finally have a much needed conversation about the will and the shooting. Right in front of Hen and Chim, who were just trying to read their respective book/social media post. But hey, after five years of their pining, they were at least invested in the drama unfolding before them.

Summary
The voice over the phone connection is bright and cheerful, like a breath of fresh air sweeping away a stagnant malaise. A shame, Eddie thinks, that this was just a recording and not the real deal.
“This is Buck! Sorry I missed your call, I’ll be with you as soon as I’m done slinging hoses - if this is Chri-“
“Dad!”
With a sigh, Eddie lets his phone drop into a waiting hand from where he had been cradling it to his ear with a lifted shoulder. The last of the message is tinny where it plays out in his palm, the volume too low to catch before the answer phone beeps, and Eddie thumbs the red button on the darkening screen.
Still no word from Buck.

A re-imagining of the ending to 3x18, with Buck also coming along to see Christopher off on his Summer trip, and Eddie seeing the signs of the length Buck will go for Chris.

“Family doesn’t have to be you, and Christopher, and a woman that could maybe be his mother. It can just be you and Christopher. It can be you, and Christopher, and the people around you that love you enough to never stop trying.”
“Like Buck.” Eddie doesn’t mean to voice it, but it feels nice to do it anyway.
“Sure,” Frank nods. There is a smile on his face, one that Eddie doesn’t think he’s seen before. “Like Buck.”

Summary
Buck was happy. Things were looking up for him. Besides the hardships his friends are facing. And the... fog thing that's happening to his head sometimes. And besides the fact that Chris left. Not that... not that he really has the right to miss Chris the way that Eddie does. But Buck is happy and Eddie is just his best friend even if Chris is a little more than just his best friend's kid. But it's fine. Buck is happy.
Eddie is... not happy. Buck has been busy and Chris has been gone and the quiet of his house has given room for all these confusing thoughts to scream louder than ever before. Thoughts about love. Thoughts about family. Thoughts about Buck. It's been far too quiet.

Summary
His dad wanted to make sure he was always loved, always taken care of. Chris knew with his entire being that if his dad couldn't be the one loving and taking care of him then there was no one who would do a better job of it than Buck.
But apparently, this 'Evan' guy was written in his dad's will as the person to take care of Chris.
But that's stupid, that's the stupidest thing Chris ever heard. Chris needed to know that if he couldn't be taken care of by his dad then he'd be taken care of by Buck.
There was only one way Chris could make sure Buck would be the one taking care of him. He needed Buck to adopt him, as his stepfather.
It was a great idea, really. Chris didn't know why he's never thought of it before.
It was a win-win-win scenario. Chris got to be taken care of by his dad and Buck, his dad and Buck each got to marry their best friend, and this Evan guy could never take Chris away from Buck if his dad got hurt.
So, obviously, his dad had to marry Buck. All they had to do was fall in love. Chris didn't think that would be too hard for them.
//OR//
After Eddie gets shot, Chris overhears a conversation about the will.
