He never expected that an unknown member of his family—unknown to him, at least—would find him and bring the truth of his death to light. That he would have a second chance with his beloved Imelda. That he would have the opportunity to spend his final years as a member of his familia.
OR
What if Héctor was able to make amends with Imelda a decade before Miguel found his way to the Land of the Dead? Still movie compliant (mostly).
This story is an outline that I do not plan to finish. Even still, it has a sort of conclusion and might still be fun to read. I hope it inspires some people to write something someday. :)

Summary
Verso Dessendre, born as a rare hybrid of a Painter/Musician, have been a center focus in the family, being the only male sibling and to be the next Heir. Upon learning his Musician ability, Verso plans his desire to be free. The Dessendre Family have been griefing eversince Verso's death. Little that they know, everything has been staged and Verso have been alive since then in secret. Despite the new freedom after his life changing meeting of another Hybrid, Gustave, Verso's sufferings still clinging onto him from both worlds.
Perhaps, being "dead" is not enough....
