“It’s tragic, isn’t it? I can’t even face the people who matter to me,” Buck told him. He turned to look at Eddie.
Eddie was leaning against the door frame, and Ravi started to walk out. “No, you stay,” Eddie said sternly as he looked at Ravi.
Ravi looked between them and didn’t know what to do. He leaned back against the locker. Buck let out a frustrated sigh. “What, now?” Buck asked angrily.
“You think that no one wants to say goodbye? You just left the group chat like it was nothing. You gave your transfer request to the interim Captain after Gerrard left, like it was nothing. No one knows how to talk to you, Buck. You just cut everyone off.” Eddie said. But Buck didn’t cut everyone off, no, he just started talking less, he just hoped no one noticed, but of course Eddie did. Eddie always noticed when Buck self-isolated.

“What do you mean you’re not circumcised?” It sounded different in Eddie’s brain than how it came out. Maybe he’d had too many beers on this guy’s night with Chimney, Ravi, and Buck. He wanted to sound cool, unaffected, but the way everyone was looking at him now told him that he actually sounded distressed. Buck’s cheeks were blushing pink, and Eddie couldn’t help but stare a bit at the birthmarks. He forced himself to look away while explaining himself.
“I mean…you just don’t seem like the type.”

Eddie is entirely aware that he could find a more conservative church, much like those in El Paso where priests are not afraid to rebuke the gay plague and invite prayer for those burdened by such sickness. He knows this, but immediately pushes the idea from his mind each time: it's not what he wants. Not really.
Leaving the church is always easier than entering, the heavy doors pushing Eddie out, pushing him away.
